I love everything about this song.it brings tears to my eyes. makes me go nostalgic, but also think about the future. Really brings back memories! This old frog was still able to hop? around when this song came out, and images of back then pop in my head! I'm normally not too big on live cuts-they almost never sound like the record! But this is great, considering that! The 1st time I heard it, I was surprised R.E.M. could write such song. The line 'a simple prop to occupy my time' was really offensive, conflicting to the 1st line that makes a listener to be ready to hear a sweet song. I was like: how can someone you love be a simple prop? Kind of love song, kind of? not. When R.E.M. play it live, it seems kind of appropriate song: it's sung to this audience, then to other and so on. It's very impressive hearing the whole audience sing it along with the band.

For me this song is like about one looking for love. Possibly having too much of love, but not completely sharing it, maybe for a fear. Sadly, not appreciating love given by others, and all anguished, regreting for such behaviour, yet running in this circle. This song became hit not without the reason. Not all songs have to be sweet melodies. Love R.E.M. for the diversity of themes of their songs and how the whole song or a line of it can? have a big and often different meaning for many people.

My take: When he was naive and? younger narrator thought a relationship should be all wine and roses. (I used to think..). His partner has not outgrown that notion yet and only wants the easy part, to claim the good days. So the narrator says, fine, newb, I'll take the rain, the burden of the hard days. He hoped in doing so he would nurture the growth of the other (who would blossom under his protection). Didn't happen, so he parts with advice: celebrate the rain, as he is now, alone.

Um, seriously? Plenty of R.E.M. songs are impressionistic, but this isn't one of them. Just look at the lyrics of the chorus -- saying "You cling to this, and claim the best - if this is what you're offering, I'll take the rain", is basically saying, in the context of verses about a relationship that never grew beyond a summer love, "You aren't giving me a good reason? to stay in this -- I'll take my chances, I'll brave uncertainty to find something better."

The whole point of the skateboard and dog are to be symbols of something besides the obvious. The skateboard so loves the dog that he allows her to step on him even when they are in the best of circumstances. The phrase "I'll take the rain" means that he will take the rough spots on himself so that her life is always "in the sunshine" meaning she'll be spared any harshness in her? life. Look a little deeper, there are more things to see than just at the surface.

I think your over analyzing and imagining things. It's just a dog on a skateboard it's not meant to mean? anything, just like the song. I mean what does "I'll take the rain" even mean? I'm sure you can give me some explanation as to what you consider the song title means but the fact is it has no meaning. Sometimes things can not have any meaning, but can still be good art. This is an example of such a thing.

Song makes me realize how many of us may think of ourselves as lepers--only damaged on the inside-- even though on? the outside we appear perfectly normal. I've often thought, why hasn't anyone used this phrase before in a song, it's almost archetypal? A lot of Stipe lyrics are like that. The shock of the word "leper" combined with the beauty of the vocals/melody is both jarring and strongly moving.

Did anyone else? notice the symbolic coincidence that at the end of the video Bill Berry is left behind while Mike, Peter, and Michael go on without him? Also more strange since this was the last single with Bill Berry.

Nope...not even close. Kurt was dead long before this video was made. The Monster album was released in September 1994 and Whats the Frequency Kenneth was the first single which was also released in September. Kurt died in April. ?

No, I totally get that, man. Lots of their other songs too (End of the World, Finest Worksong, The One I Love, etc). Some artists can do these guitar raveups and the sum is much more than the sum of the parts. Tom Petty used? to do it, kinda, and long ago Niel Young w/ Crazy Horse, but REM was needed when they came along.
