Maybe not freight trains, but it was damn big at Newport Beach's infamous 'Wedge' on Friday, July 24. Body surfers, surfers, stand-up paddle boarders, and bodyboarders all took a crack at the big, powerful waves. ** UPDATE: A body surfer was killed at The Wedge a few hours after this footage was shot. My deepest condolences to his family.

No, wearing leashes in 10 ft waves that dump you right into sand would just get you drowned. Although it's a challenge fetching your board. It totally is... I rode the wedge? a few years ago (it was way smaller than this maybe 6 feet) and even then I got pounded into the sand and almost broke my knee on a rock. Makes me feel really sorry for the guy at 1:59 :O

Board looked wrong for the conditions. Notice how hard to deal w bottom turn ?? I do agree, harder for them to avoid hitting guys in a lineup once the drop started, so I would take it personally of either hit me on the drop or with a lost board. I don't have a problem with SUP's When used correctly by the right person in the right places and conditions they can be a great workout and pretty fun I think the problem is there are to many inexperienced people out there with money who hop on? them because they are the latest fad then take them in places where they shouldn't be and put others in danger SUP's should be reserved for people with experience in the water and who know the workings of a lineup just my opinion as a lifeguard

Thats why I said "surf" leashes but thats beside the point. All of these spongers are using leashes. Your arm can not get torqued from using a body board leash even in these waves because a body board is so light. A surf board is a different story and in these waves your surf leash would? snap.

I liked it. You come out with a B.S. so if you want a degree out of it, it is a good way to go. You just need to meet the pre-requisites. If you already have those classes you will be in good shape. I thought the program does a great job preparing you for many? things after therapy. Like, dosimetry, management, etc..

I was shooting that day and not in the water. Rips come and go. They can be surprisingly strong in even small surf, or non-existent in 20' swells. There is never a problem with the rip because it's isolated against the jetty and easy to swim out of. Getting back to shore is another matter. With surf this size, ride? one in or pray for a lull.

I got held under? a 6-7 ft dumper for about 7 secounds , it dosent seem that long as people can hold there breath for say a minute. I own these mercer wedges too! I agree with the size issue, it's loose at the back but tight around the toes. Added with the height of the shoe my feet slide to the front and hurts my toes which makes it hard to? walk in. PLUS The bottom is not very stable because the wedge is super narrow.
