I'd have to wonder about his intentions, are they musical are just? impossible? Listening to the likes of Bozzio, Pert, Carey, even Grohl and Copeland, there is a sense of intent, arrangement, an honesty in trying to relate something thats coherent and enhancing. Theres always been a method in their madness which is was makes them genius, IMO of course. I recognize what Donati's doing, smashing the hell out of his kit and throwing in a few parradiddles, hes more of an Olympian.

Well that's it really. Generally he plays stuff that's just so technically complicated it's absolutely mind blowing to think about, let alone actually playing it. But if you're not specifically listening for it it's easy to just sound like noise. It's honestly nothing musically extraordinary, but technically it's leagues and leagues above everybody else. But it's a fine line saying what is and what isn't music. Regardless,? he's a drumming god.

I simply dont get this guy. Yes, he very good technically, can do all the parradiddles. I see that what hes doing is mathematically tough with a lot of limb independance but I dont hear anything musically extraordinary. I'm playing drums over 8 years now. It seems that any time someone is critical of him? they are deemed a twit or "not a drummers drummer". I know its a matter of taste but that should also hold up folks who say this guy isnt that impressive.

I always liked Virgil Fox, though he was? unorthodox. In today's organ world, perhaps Cameron Carpenter fills his shoes. Ives' Variations is a wonderful piece.

rubbish, Ives would have wanted it this way. He need the time to make the changes. This version is amazing in its multiple sounds. His technique is perfection, squeezes every drop out of the music. I can see Ives laughing in the audience. He plays like a real musician, unafraid to put his own stamp on the music, not like the robots the music schools crank out. People always? bash someone different, even if a genius.

Here's why some people criticize this performance. Although Virgil Fox was pretty skilled technically, there were times when his own "takes" on a composition obscured some of the work's own strengths. I've heard an old LP version of Virgil Fox playing this piece, and the performance was much more straightforward. Better, too. No silly rolled chords, no grand pauses inserted into the? score...Ives' piece has enough humor on its own...but here, Virgil adds the equivalent of a laugh track. No need.

What a wonderful composition for organ! So much classical organ music is? deadly serious (but enjoyable, of course). Here Ives gives the organ a sense of humor. I laughed out loud starting from 5:20 to 5:30. For the benefit of our British friends, Ives was not poking fun at you - the tune is known as America (aka Of Thee I Sing) by Yankees.

Virgil is pushing the limits here.If you want to hear him play with only feeling look up SOUTHERN SONS (Lead me to water).His drumming is simply amazing in it with more feeling than can be comprehended. I was fortunate to be able to attend one of Virgil's concerts back in the mid 70's and he is/was magnificent! He really did bring a lot of the great classic organ music to the world that would? never have otherwise realized the grandeur of this magnificent music. I have many of his recordings and he still brings a wonderful flavor to all he plays. I have loved the great classic Bach Organ Works for longer than I can remember.Thank you Virgil, for sharing your wonderful talents. You are missed.

thats not true the organ takes the full body to play, not just the hands like a piano, but both feet, and also the mind to keep the insterment at proper registration, and use the pipes in certain ways to effect the mood of the music its the hardest of all to play. and it does become affected by touch if it is pressed slowly.? or banged down fast like the Master Mr. Fox though his voice I have to say sounds like Fred Rogers, you know Mr Rogers from the kids show.

"I play the organ? like a musical instrument." god bless virgil. he said that because many "trained" musicians dismiss organists as "button pushers" because the instrument is mechanical in nature and doesn't respond to the "touch" of the performer. virgil told me that when he had his first lesson with wilhelm middelschulte, the master said "this is the most mechanical of all musical instruments and if you can OVERCOME that, you will be a great musician. virgil did it in spades.

They are marked only athe beginning. It seems? everyone ceases playing them after. But I play them throughout, including the pedal. See the Biggs recording - I listed them all. When missing, I feel a void. Cathy loved the Gigue but did not care for other works. She liked major but not minor keys. Though I wanted to marry her, we separated a few months later. I did not play 577 until manyears later. I like Biggs' recording much better than Virgil's performance.

- I try and play the grace notes, trills, and mordents where they're marked on the music. I love it how Bach composed such an incredible work of music; how the theme starts in the tenor, then goes to the alto, soprano, and then the bass. My favorite part is when that pedal comes in to play, I love that (and I'm sure you do, too!) When I play this piece, it brings me such joy and contentment.? So rhythmic, complex, joyful, fulfilling, upon first hearing I loved the Gigue. Learned it in 1974 to play for? my beloved Cathy who did not like organ music. Mmm yeah i tried those horrible G2 coated pieces of shit and they made my deep toms sound like bongos, just awful, ive got a 10", 12", 13" and 16", im going to try Clear emperors next, Im never going to stary? from coated 3 Remo again either for snare, evans has to much "ping" or "ring" for my liking, its a pain in recording!, Remo just has that nice "CRACK!".

I know - I'm having a lot of trouble with my 16" tom at the moment with G2 coated/G1 clear? combos. Any suggestions? Having said that, I think that Evans heads are stellar when it comes to higher pitched toms, snares and bass heads. The EMAD is simply magnificent.

110% agree w/last comment - I saw Buddy when I was 14 and still marvel at him now that I am? 40 and still pursuing the drum kit. Nobody and I fucking mean NOBODY has made me question what is capable behind the drum kit like Virgil. There is no doubt that Virgil has picked up the torch where Buddy left off. I only hope he ultimately reaches a higher level of commercial success only to make his presence better known to other drummers who have yet to become familiar with him. Thx Virg!

Inflationary dollar -> rise in prices -> rise in wages to keep up with prices (even though the average wage has lost ground) to keep consumerism up for corporate profits.
