I also checked out Paco Sery (numerous videos), and he didn't impress me much at all. He's good, but nothing superb. I understood everything he was doing, too, it just honestly wasn't that impressive. He also wasn't even that great on polyrhythms, Vinnie and Dave are beyond him in control, speed, etc. And I? just know that you're gonna call me out for mentioning Carey since he's primarily a rock musician, but that just shows that Kirk isn't THAT skilled, not even close to Cobham/Weckl/Colaiuta

It's just your matter of personal preference, I'm done proving to you over and over again that Vinnie's been more skilled than the guys you have named before he turned 40.? We're pretty close in age, and probably pretty close in skill if we're doubting one can outdo the other. Wow, Terry Bozzio, you gotta be killing me. Why not go further with Mike Terrana and Mike Portnoy? You're pretty much focused on rock music. You should check out Paco Sery, Atma Anur, Rashied Ali, Kirk Covington, Cornell Rochester or Tony Williams, then let's talk about polyrhythms, time and style. I'm not biased but saying how it is. over Jack DeJohnette and Billy Cobham. Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan of both Weckl and Colaiuta and have seen them live several times but they just cannot be among the best. I'm also a huge fan of Frank Zappa (how could any prog rock and jazz-fusion fan not love this guy?) but he's? not the measure for music. No one is. Worshipping Vinnie Colaiuta is like saying that Jeff Porcaro was the best drummer ever. That's very immature.

The "old fart" is 26 and I certainly doubt you're more educated than me. I also doubt you're a more skilled musician but let's not go too personal.? I don't judge musicians by their ethnicity. Jazz drummers happen to be at the top and most of them are black. Vinnie might be among the best for mainstream but he's no jazz drummer, although he has established himself in fusion. You really amaze me because I can't understand how any "skilled musician" can put Vinnie and Dave Weckl

To be honest, Billy Cobham is? literally the fourth most skilled drummer I've heard, so I'm not biased. You are. I can't believe you're an adult and you don't know that Frank Zappa recruits people like Terry Bozzio and Vinnie C. for a reason. You should take a music theory class so you can understand what they're doing, then come back and debate. Yeah....you seriously have NO idea what you're talking about. Vinnie's played for everybody and their mother (FRANK ZAPPA), and he can literally sightread ANYTHING you throw at him. His improv alone handily outclasses everybody you listed, no question. the only person who's even in the? same league as far as technicality goes is Dave Weckl. Jack DeJohnette's good...but Billy Cobham's similar to him, and MUCH better, and Cobham would tell you Vinnie's the best there is, too.

vinnie has a fantastic way of soloing around the melody and rhythm at a song's core/heart. he doesn't merely engage in a show of chops or rudimental prowess, he sacrifices playing rapidly/fast during some bars so that he can be musical, and i think such is part of the reason i aspire to be? like him more than any other drummer.

We learn from the DVD extras from this show, that it's actually even more amazing than that. It wasn't even that she was good enough to play with Vinnie... he "discovered" her through an open door in a studio where they were both recording (different sessions), and when? Beck needed a player for this tour, it was Vinnie who told Beck to hire her. She didn't just get to play with Vinnie... Vinnie ASKED to play with HER. Now THAT, is high praise, as high as it gets.

she is already one of the greats (Tal) I never realized how good Beck was until I saw Him play at the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame Anniversary show and that was my first dose of Tal the downside might be that having this much respect from her peers could find her in a behind the scene player spot early in life like Ron Howard but he? ain't never been that cute

Just had? to post again: we are so lucky this kind of music is still around: killer beyond believable musicianship but still absolutely stunningly beautiful and tasteful. This is music which actually commuinicates with the audience. These musicians make their instruments "talk" instead of just wanking to themselves or trying too hard to be badass. Check also the keyboarder: just tastefully providing the chord progression. Well done! This stuff actually IS my definition of being badass!

i will never forget i did not miss a pantera show if was cinci dayton etc i was there. we would all pile up in the car and use my poundin ass system for pre show high way moshing. Would always get to the show early first? car in the lot smoke pot and drink orange juice for that special vitam C kick every show it was a ritual to step out for a bit and listen for the last sound check of the night. From one concert ive met good folks here in ohio from new york KY chicago england virginia etc

Although I totally agree with what you say, and not wantin' to start no drummer wars, but Dennis Chambers come to mind. He can wreck the shit of P-Funk? tunes with the greatest backbeat and outplay most fusion cats. Very few else dudes. Maybe Bozzio but he's not as versatile.

A short time later, I caught the Joni Mitchell remake "Baby, I Don't Care" video with Vinnie playing drums. I bought the album the next day and have gone thru 3 copies since!

i will say this. I enjoy Petrucci's solo work most. He doesn't have a lead, then a? backing track. He has like, 5 separate tracks which change prominence in his solo pieces and work with each other like in Animate Inanimate. If you follow one, the experience will be completely different than when following another. Despite that, I like the lead licks that Vinnie brings. Very tasteful and interesting.

That's a tough call! My 2 fav guitarists are Vinnie and Petrucci. They have different styles and can't really compare the two. They're both amazing. I will say this though, I? do enjoy Vinnie's solo music over any solo music that Petrucci has written.
