"I wonder? if they stretch/squash their family photos to fit the shape of whatever photo frame they bought." LOL, I wonder about that too! I wonder how a chronic squisher would like it if someone else (like, say, a professional photographer) squished or squashed their kid's photo, just because they felt like it. Would they pay full price for a distorted and too fat or too skinny photo of their kid, or would this be something important enough for them to notice? It is an interesting question.

You left out one type of stretch, namely when they stretch 4:3 to 16:9. Either way, it's probably a lost cause. For some reason the majority don't see what is so obvious to some of us, and they are more interested in not having black borders. I wonder if they stretch/squash their family photos to fit the shape of whatever? photo frame they bought.

Ohh Jesus Christ, your statement at 1:22 is exactly what I feel when watching every second youtube video! This video should be shown to every? ignorant idiot, who fucks up the aspect ratio and then even has the balls to say, that there is NOTHING WRONG about the picture. I am so adding this video to my favourites! The worst thing is, that many people don't even realize that the picture is distorted. You need to render them according to what the original source video is.? If your source video is 4:3, you need to keep your video at 4:3, even if that means black bars on the side. To get rid of the black bars on a 4:3 video, you'd have to stretch out the video and distort it. Hideous! Whatever your source is, you need to keep that, whether it be 16:9, or 4:3, or whatever. If that means there are black bars, that's what it means. Better that than distortion, which looks tacky and awful.

I'm not sure what your terminology means. "Full-screen" is commonly known? as 4:3, and "widescreen" as 16:9. I don't know what you mean by "full size." Look at the video response, there is a new tutorial which reflects YouTube's change to widescreen.

i never saw this before! the one thing i have problems with is my N&S video clips. i've checked to make sure that i've marked off all the proper aspect ratios when i rip the dvd,? etc. . . and it still looks off to me. but then again, it could just be me?!?!?

There wasn't time? to explain things like square vs. unsquare pixels in this brief tutorial, and moreover, it would be too overwhelmingly technogeeky for an "Intro to the concept of Aspect Ratio" video. ;D Avisynth is awesome, but it's Windows-only, and not all fan vidders use Windows.

or better yet use avisynth ;3 i see you didn't mention pixel sizes and the PC vs TV settings, too many people use 720X480 (with incorrect pulldown flags to boot) instead of converting to proper 4:3 with square PAR? for viewing on a monitor x_x

I don't know what to tell you, other than to encode your videos in a YouTube-friendly way. I export as square pixels (either MP4 H.264, H.264 MOV, WMV or DivX AVI) at a straight 16:9 aspect ratio? (640x360 or whatever) and YouTube usually handles this well.

OK, great but why doesn't YouTube let you? "do the right thing"? YouTube does all kinds of cool compression and everything else, you would think they could also do the "Expand" operation to add the black bars as needed. This is for the case that I upload a clip that is say, 500X440 pixels and meant to be square pixels -- YouTube should be able to do the expand to preserve aspect ratio -- but it doesn't. Argh.

If your 2.35:1 clip has no letterbox bars, then no, there's nothing you can do. Which is a really good reason to get rid of Windows? Movie Maker! If the 2.35:1 video has letterbox bars, treat it like 16:9. Another thing you could do is to take your finished video out of WMM and convert it to 2.35:1 in another encoder.

Yeah I've made some home videos in 16:9 and I wanted to upload them to YouTube, but I didn't want to Pan&Scan? or get them squished. I figured out that converting a 16:9 video to 853x480 will preserve the aspect ratio on YouTube (leave black bars). No special editing.
