Absolutely an excellent point. My tendancy to pull was completely eliminated after I consciously folded my right elbow and set wrists during the final phase of the backswing. This move had me now in very comfortable position to attack the golf ball. The shaft movement on the downswing reveals a powerfully fast "swish" into the ball and through to the finish. Again, this video instruction is great although I do not need to pack stuff under my smelly? right arm pit.

what are you talking about... chuck cook is a top 50 instructor anyways, but what your talking about is a very old golf swing where a reverse c is your finish position, This is very? bad for your body and causes lots of unneeded movement. You dont want your club to get across the line and the top that promotes hooks and slices and puts more stress on your back. You actually want to keep both elbows close to your body throughout the swing. i bet you hit it far but very inconsiistenly

Jack didn't really have too much of a 'flying right elbow' check his vid's although it wasn't as vertical as some. Players such as Couples and Furyk, plus Darcy have a true 'flying elbow' but through immense natural abiltiy and a lot of work they were able to control it. On your other point, ref the towel/headcover drill. This does promote narrower swing arc, resulting in less power, but it is really designed to compensate for the? 'flying right elbow' and promote the right 'feel.

2 words in favor of the flying elbow 1-Jack 2-Nicklaus If one knows what to do with the flying elbow (reconnect it to the hip PRIOR to turning the shoulders) it can be a great advantage to ones game.The clubhead will come less sharply from the inside and the clubface will stay looking at the target longer.It also allows for a large swing arc.Those are the 3main reasons Jack prefered the "flying right elbow".The? headcover drill promotes a flat swing plane with resulting loss of power+accuracy

Yeah but then the right elbow comes back to the side if it leaves.The tip where you keep it there all the time is mostly for the novice so they get a connected feel because they are all over the place.Hogan stayed connected then disconnected to widen the? arc then he reconnected to find the slot and shallow out.Eventually the right shoulder will help you feel the connection you need.I agree lots of varying opinions on this subject.

This drill is not good for pullers at all. By keeping the right elbow tucked in, you are going to get the club laid off, which will lead to an more out to in path. By all means flatten your swing plane if you can, but don't do it by focusing on tucking your right elbow in. You're going to want to work on turning your upper body away from the target, and if anything let the right elbow fly a little, that gets the club a? little across the line which promotes a more in to out path.

Theres a drill to fix steep fat shots, slicing and lack of turn. First you set up normal, then turn your feet pointed towards the target and your belt buckle pointed at the? target. But have your shoulders in normal postion set up to the ball. Itll be very hard to make a full back swing unless your a flexible, strong person. But this drill eliminates slices, makes you hit further, and gets rid of swaying. If you dont understand just send me a message. Its the best drill ive ever done.

Actually, opening the face is probably the most UNcommon cause of the? shanks... having players think that this is the cause is very dangerous because then you have them closing the club face immensely, thus further upsetting their swing. The MOST common cause of the shanks is a shifting swing plane outward and crowding the ball at address, as well as an over-the-top swing plane.

Jimmy is half right on this one. Getting the left elbow turning down is key, because it promotes staying connected, and staying connected keeps the club on the proper orbit. OTOH, pulling the heel of the club down often? gets people moving the club out from the body, and the orbit moves out, causing a shank. I'm guessing JB knows this, but his explanation isn't going to convince many.

I notice I hit the ball off the heel 90% of the time with the long irons and driver, because with the long clubs I sometimes take the club farthur away from my body to get my ark wider and consequently the clubface ends up a few centimeters in front of the ball. wow, I dont l;ike this advice at all. Plus I think most shanks come from over the top and golfers getting ahead of the ball. The advice doesn't seem good to me-it will cause big pulls. I disagree to an extent. If you try what he is saying you will hit a lot of dead pulls with the irons and also? a lot of fan shots. If you intitiate the downswing with the left hip turning to the left, centrifugal force will square the clubhead. You dont have to manipulate it the way Ballard is saying. The golf swing is too quick to be manipulating the hands in the downswing.

That is a possibility, but not very likely. I have never seen anyone on film (or in person for that matter) that would be able to keep the club so open that? the heel is the first point of contact. At that position, even if they made contact with the face first, the ball would shoot completely to the right anyway. The shanks would be the least of their worries. A person that unaware of a grossly open face does not have the shanks; they are just a beginner without any fundamentals.

Most players at that level? do not think about their hands at all during the swing. And no good athlete who swings a racket or club at a ball thinks of only what the hands are doing. They cannot do anything without incorporating the other elements of the body. The elbow thought is a reference only since Jimmy teaches a body movement. In all of his teaching he says that you cannot focus on the hands and arms without thinking about what the larger muscles of the body are doing.

Your elbows are at the end of the bone that connects to your shoulder. There are no moving pieces in the elbow to allow for any pronation or supination, but there are in your? shoulder joints (rotator cuffs). So the idea of keeping your elbow pointing at the ground is not necessarily bad advice, but it is not controlled by the elbow. It's 100% controlled by the shoulder. If you're going to try to do what he's suggesting, focus on what your shoulder joint is doing, not the elbow.
