the harbor freight is a decent welder, people saying it does not penetrate deep are talking about thick gauge steel, your talking? about manifolds not building frames, this welder will do plenty and if you plan on getting into heavy gauge welding, go ahead and get the lincoln electric 225 welder ... that welder is a beast but for like tacking and non heavy bearing parts itll be fine, the small electrode diameter that you would use on the Harbor freight , will be perfect

thanks for the info, yeah i figure arc would be a decent beginner welder to start off with...but with arc welders can i weld like manifold for cars ? im not sure if there are a specific choice for welding manifold . also, ive actually heard lots of negative things about harbor freight is not worth the money.. people on forums say spend atleast 3 to 400 or your not gonna have a good penatrating weld.. ive heard also? some car chargers can arc weld. i have a 100 amp charger.

you wont be able to do tig welding without gas, hence the name Tungsten Inert "Gas". unfortunatly it is pricey to recharge the tanks, on top of that if you dont have much experience , i would try stick or SMAW welding its one of the most cheapest, basic forms of welding, harbor freight sells a 180.00 stick welder inverter, and all you have to do is buy electrodes? " the stick you weld with" and thats it no gasses or anything.

I always brace my? hand with a finger to the metal. That's keeps me from shaking to bad. Not sure what mirror welding is but for any type just more practice, practice and then practice some more. Don't give up or get discouraged. Everyone had to learn the first time.

The tungsten tip should not be pointy it should have a balled end or flat depending on what your welding. Even if you were to give it a? sharp point as soon as you weld it will melt down to a balled end.

This is the first time i have seen this video, did you forget about basic safety, arc rays and the damage they do to the skin, maybe you want to make another one with adequate protection on, as far as being easy, you obviously havn't welded much duplex stainless or copper pipe, keep up the practice, let the professionals do? the real work and the teaching.

It's not whether you are an old school craftsman or not, as much as it is the deficiencies you recognize in the newer welding methods. When the newer methods are so highly touted, despite their deficiencies, all we can do is hold them at a safe distance? which sometimes requires a little attitude!

Gas Welding was used for the first 50 years of car construction because it was the only viable method. Even today, TIG welding does not give the penetration necessary for constructing these types of? bodies. Additionally, with the inherent weld-density issues, consistent with TIG welding, the weld beads are large and puffy, and not flat and dense as they are with gas welding. This means gas welds are much more efficient for body construction.

You can stick weld with a GOOD D.C. welder, and if the aluminum is over .125 thickness, otherwise use the gas rig and 5356? filler and the aluminum gas welding flux. The alloy composition is always given by the 4-digit number as in this case you are describing 6061. You do not mention thickness, however I would guess it is between .100 and .187. You will need a tip sized #4 - 6 to do this.

Also take ductility into consideration. The larger heat-affected zone acetylene creates has a friendly consequence: the larger heated area cools slower and produces a very soft and ductile weld. Kent's demonstration showed how the welded area can be formed with little risk of cracking. That's important in coachbuilding and aircraft work where the welded area may be shaped numerous times. GTAW beads are often harder and more prone to crack? when worked even moderately.

Sir, very nice. I've never welded aluminum but have some material that i want to try welding. What I have is Aluminum decking bars that go inside semi trailers for double decking loads. The peices are rectangular extruded aluminum 6061 if i'm not mistaken Some are made by a co. called Ancra I believe there are other materials in the bars besides alu. like magnesium maybe ? any advice on welding this type of material? together ? I have oxy. acet. & a miller thunderbolt stick welder. Thanks H.

Great video.It is very difficult to convince people that gas welding aluminum is possible. All the old (and new)Cobra bodies were gas welded.Ron Fournier also gas welds aluminum. He said it is especially good on tanks. If you gas weld say an oil tank on a race care and it crashes, the tank will "give" Tig would? most likely brake apart. Very nice work! ? I learned Oxy-Acetylene and stick welding when I was 15, but I'm 40 now. I was gifted a Miller MIG about 3 years ago for a project, and I'm getting my feet wet again, loving every minute of it. Trying to soak in everything I can. Now I'd like to expand my toolbox because a MIG is limited to what it can do. Nice torch! ...and thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge!

My father was a welder at Caterpillar for over 20 years. He welded stainless track link dies with a stick welder. Personally, his favorite was the oxy-acetylene torch. He despised MIG and TIG welders for some reason. Maybe because he was an old-time welder that learned in the old days. In any case, I've seen him do some beautiful work with a torch. That having been said, I love MIGs, but am not skilled enough to? use a TIG properly.

Yes, I have covered the TIG vs Torch issue in depth in? many articles, booklets, and public workshops over the past 20 years. Let's not be too hasty to dismiss? a viable welding method. Your results may vary, but there are a number of applications - aside from heavy plate - that benefit from the torch. I've used both the TIG and the Torch for a number of years, going back to 1970 in fact, and there are times when the TIG is pretty good. - tinman

lovely welding :) its a shame the oxy and acetylene industries are stitched up to the hilt in the uk, the gas is really cheap & approx £15 per bottle, but the? rental charge on the actual bottle send the price waaay high.....works out at approx £356 per year just to rent the bottles alone, and none of the companies will fill a privately owned bottle.....pretty sure the mafia is in charge here

i use nickel rods for cast iron welding. mostly reclaim work on machinery parts and engine blocks. the actual rod is quite easy to use and is quite similar to verticore MIG welding in that it cools quickly. it is a pain to pre heat and also if you cant keep heat on it and gradually bring the temp down. i use kitty litter and shove the part in at? least 4 - 6 inches under the surface of the kitty litter, leave it in there overnight.

what makes cast iron a bitch to weld is the fact you must heat it before? and after welding because the metal is not ideal for rapid cooling and heating ie welding not saying its impossible by a long shot but it is a certified pain in the ass and if you can remove it without too much heartache it is way better to DIY!!!

not sure if you balled your tungsten or not it is not mentioned in the video but I was given? the impression that you are working with a tapered tungsten. AC Tig requires a balled tungsten tip so that might be part of your control problem

Two ways to do it correctly. One is to find the factory specc's and use a feeler? gauge. The other is to use a inductive pickup (Coil some magnet wire around the gun cable if you dont have a pickup clamp) and a multimeter with a frequency counter. Just adjust the gap until the guns output meets the listed frequency or within range of the frequency dials position.

try balling up the aluminum by striking an arc for a couple of seconds on dc+ and then switching back to ac also you didnt say how much shielding gas you were using but i would? use alot due to the fact that you are using such a large nozzle also make sure you are keeping torch about a second for every 10 amps after stopping arc

Nope, running dc on this one. Haven't tried to do it with ac but I will give it a try. It was turned up pretty high on the amps. About 150 if I remember? right. Hit it hard and then back off once the puddle gets going. Just like aluminum....

interesting, are you running ac? sounds and looks like it, if so why are you running ac? i've always heard it can be done ac or dc, you should get the heat in faster and with less amps on dc, theoretically, but i'm guessing you'd? be running about 90-95% en anyway so probably not a huge difference!

if you can't get it hot enough to silver solder with oxy acetylen assuming you are? using big nozzles you probably won't be tig welding it ;) depending on what kind of boiler it is, i'd just solder it with normal leadfree solder bars, i'm no boiler expert, but i don't see a problem with normal solder, most copper plumbing is lead/leadfree soldered after all ;)

Hi Kevin? , thanks for your quick response , boiler has been dry for some years now . i believe the copper is very thick . initially i tried to silver solder it but even using 2 large blowlamps and an oxy aceteline torch wasnt enough to overcome the dissipation of heat ..one thing is for sure .if i ever get it fixed it will be a very efficient boiler !!! i will message you with my email add . then i can send you some pics ,thanks again .

Well, my first thought was, "is all the water drained out?" At 150 amps you should be blowing holes all over that thing. Has to be something inside sinking the heat away. Either that thing is way thicker than you think or it's still full of water. Let? me know what you find please. I would really like to know what you find...

If his machine can run about 100 amps you should have no problem at all. Defenatly do a few test runs on some scrap first but you should be fine at about 75 to 85 amps to start. When you are welding it should be in the 55 to 65 range i think. Hope? that helps.... Thanks for posting......

I have a small project for my brewery I'm looking to have TIG welded like that since I'm trying to avoid brass in the system if I can. It's 3" copper tubing with 1/8" wall. What kind of amperage do you think I might need for this job? My buddy has a TIG, but wasn't sure it had enough current to do the? job, and we haven't dine any tests with scrap yet. The longest weld will be 18" long, so I figure that will soak up a substantial a mount of heat.

try using quite big gas nozzle and don't stick the electrode out of it more than a half of its thickness. Also wind up Your AC frequency. It keeps the arc considerably stable. It won't be as stable as when DC welding using a sharp tungsten, but once it grabs it won't bounce around.?

green is good for Alu alloys, while red and grey are good for steel alloys... oh... I forgot to add they work fine for me. Gas choice is also a good thing. Alu goes fine with 100% Ar and Ar with He mixtures? or pure He. Stainless goes fine using Ar + 2%H (not He). Don't try using any Hydrogen mixtures with Aluminum. Try using biggest gas nozzles possible to avoid oxidation and overheat.

Very nice welds ,, Aluminum is a blast to work with. Usually tho on corner welds like that i try to use " fusion " without using any filler rod .. it usually comes out a little cleaner -? For projects that will have pressure built up in them sometimes using filler rod is the only way to go =)

I'm thinking of getting the Everlast PowerTig 185 Micro or PowerTig 200DX. The 200DX has a much greater duty cycle, higher amp. capacity, and isn't much more expensive than the 185 Micro. However, the 185 Micro has 10-90% AC balance whereas? the 200DX has 30-70% AC balance. Is the wider AC balance of the 185 Micro any reason to consider it over the more powerful 200DX?

Everlast may make good welders(when they work, my BRAND NEW ONE WORKED FOR TEN MINUTES) But the real problem is in customer service and sales....ALEX< from Everlast is a customers worst nightmare....I will NEVER deal with these people again. They lied from the start and refused contact with their superiors......BEWARE OF ALEX,....they took my money and shipped me POOP. I had to rebuild the torch as soon as I got it under tech support instruction. then the whole thing stopped working.? BEWARE

I loved these videos and now understand the balance knob on a syncrowave what it is really doing other than just knowing cleaning and penetrating. I have a dynasty 200 dx and really wished mine had individual knobs like the everlast machine I get confused with all the different lights lighting up and just a single knob very each control. Producing good welds inside a cage frame like that is very difficult. It's much easier doing it on the bench, but then how many flat chassis have you seen? I like the bit about how a weld is like your signature......my welds tend to say "whoa, boy. what happened here? Why all the squiggle and what's that lumpy bit you tried to grind off....?" ?

Welded benches, welded seats, desks, tables and many other things are quite a waste of welding then. You can make all of them out of wood and save the welding for something important. There is enough filler material and electrodes to go around. They aren't a depleting resource like Oil. In welding schools they have to throw away thousands of dollars of welded material every week? but it gets recycled into new steel and fillers.

Maybe if thats as good as you want it to look, his welds don't look all that good, he's also rolling the bead over the edges of the joint. Try "pulsing" ,as you call it, on a lap joint or t-joint, or on any sort of steel,? your welds will most likely never look as good as they could if you don't use a "pulsing motion" and you just keep a steady fluid motion. Stopping while you dip/add filler is a bad habit to have.

Terminology. I would call this a fuel "TANK" and not a "Cell". A true race-car "fuel cell" is made of a ballistic nylon "bladder" filled with a fuel resistant "foam", much like a sponge, to keep explosive? fumes low. This bladder-with-foam is then encased in a metal protective "tank" of alloy, steel or a tough plastic. The term; "Fuel Cell" is not interchangeable with "Fuel Tank" and should not be used as such. They both hold "fuel, the former much better than the latter.

Thanks mate for your kind and speedy reply, after welding the thin 1.6 mm stainless steel i played around and left the flow at about 8 L/min and set the amps to about 55 to 60 amps is ideal for it.love your cool video's, lot and lot of info, it's just great mate and? thanks to your wife shooting this video she is just as great and sure she wil be teaching a couple a blokes a thing or two,thanks again

I think the? amps in this video were in the 80 to 90 range. As for the pipe setting, I have never worked with that size sorry. Maybe someone else can chime in on this?? (Please!)

I know what you mean!! I also suffer from big finger/little button syndrome. As for a great clear coat, have you tried? permalac? You can also do a clear coat powdercoat. I have also used Penetrol. Just spray it on and let it dry. I know it is for paint but it works great on clean steel also.

What do you recommend as a "sealer" or "clear cost" for decorative pieces in my wife's garden?? Everything I've found at home depot is varnish for woods and plastic. nice kevin. I done this my first couple years. works real well with stainless and copper together also. Not sure what gas you are using so im assuming 100% argon. If you hav not tried it try a argon? helium mix with copper. there is also a argon helium oxy mix but the argon/helium is better for copper

Best way to pre-heat aluminum is to run an oxy acetylene torch over it. Run a neutral flame over the part to be welded, it will be covered in soot. Turn on the oxygen and run the? torch over the aluminum until the soot evaporates. Works every time.

Coke cans have a plastic coating inside them. Very thin and almost un noticeable. Coke will eat through thin aluminum if you leave it there long enough. Coke makes a great rust remover but I don't think I'd drink any of it. I gave up drinking Pepsi and Coke a while back and it was? the best thing I ever did. I feel so much better than I ever have.

Don't drink out of? that goblet. Aluminum ingestion has been linked to various diseases. Is that an air cooled torch? Something that thick needs to be welded with a water cooled torch. You might also consider using a Helium argon mix with aluminum that thick. I use argon with helium and also pre heat the thick aluminum I pre heat in an oven to around 200 degrees and makes for a really great weld.

Kevin Thank you for responding to my comment. Please except my apology for the? tone of my last comment! A good rule of thumb is one amp of current per .001" of stock. Next time try a good healthy preheat. That will help you quite a bit. Also when welding aluminum that is larger than what your welder can support try using helium as a shielding gas. You'll think you have a new larger welder.

Just remember that the lathe makes round stuff a lot faster than the mill. I still haven't found my application? for the mill yet. I just keep playing with it and it will hit me I am sure. I have a turntable coming for the mill. That should open a few more doors for the creative juices to flow through. Don't worry about the fires, they are no where near anything of ours at this time.

You need a helium/argon mix to do a thick piece like that . Something like 50/50 or even more helium. It helps heaps with thick stuff. Looks like you were using just argon by the look of? the weld.

The tip balls up on it own, at least for me it does. The guy at the welding store sold me those tungstens because you don't have to mess with that anymore. I probably should have preheated the aluminum for this video. It would have made the welds much easier. Only because the metal was so thick, otherwise I don't think so. Good call!!?
