I would prefer either a longer video or one that speaks in more concise terms. A lot of times I feel as if he's going to do the left brain part and articulate whatever my right? brain has been concerned with but he usually touches on something and lets it go quickly. A lot of repetition, synonyms and antonyms used but little elaboration is actually made on many points. Quite disappointing but potentially insightful nonetheless.

I find it? sad that you would chastise Iain for sharing his logical thoughts but nothing is said about mainstream sellouts who produce dumbed down crap. That video is not a forum to prove anything - it is there to inspire the scientific community to look into this more. As a psychiatrist he should be aware? of the social implications of his messages and I believe he should not refer to his own experiences as a psychiatrist as general fact without scientific research to prove these experiences are fact.

This, so far, is the most balanced and well-argued video of all the RSA videos. In quite a few of them, despite making excellent points or delivering a potent and powerful message, the speaker would have a tendency to make misleading/false over-generalizations. Of course, they all accomplish the goal of provoking? and encouraging critical thinking, but this particular video fills my scientific satisfaction with BALANCED arguments/statements.

I had an epiphany similar to this a few years ago while traveling in Italy. While walking the streets in Florence, I kept seeing banners that said, "Pace" (pronounced pah-che) meaning peace, in English. Reflecting on its meaning, I thought of the same word in the context of the English language. In English, "pace" refers to rhythm or some function of time. I then? realized that an understanding of rhythm or "pace" is essential to an understanding of peace, and how to attain it in the world.

Schools teach children to OBEY authority, this removes responsibility from the child and denies them the opportunity to ever understand critical thinking and freedom, replacing it with? unquestioning loyalty to their slave owners. I definitely agree with you here; however,? would you? agree that it takes a bit of both (present action, future goalmaking; and while we're at it, understanding from past experience) to be a successful innovator? I wouldn't assign the label of innovator to be exclusive to either. I think a present-oriented person who learns to act for the future can be just as successful of an innovator as a future-oriented person who capitalizes on the present.

(Just noticed I posted two versions of the same reply. >.< ) There's a difference, in my mind, between the (future-oriented) planner and the (present-oriented) innovator: The first sees where the trend lines are pointing, plans accordingly,? and carries out that plan; they're all about delayed gratification. The second sees the condition currently on the ground, and by responding cleverly to them, creates what then becomes the future; they have made their work and their play one.

Hm, I'll have to think about that more. I would think that many of the Big Names in science--and I thought the video alluded to that--are more future-oriented. In no way would those who are future-oriented ride on the coattails? of those living in the present. Those who see into the future are innovators who create things never seen before--they? just, as you mentioned, need a bit of that present-time recklessness and love for the moment.

Good point. The mistakes I were? referring to were the particularly hedonistic ones that afflict our society, and it's true that there needs to be a balance of all views of time in order to be successful innovators, life lovers, and history appreciators. I guess the tough thing for most people to break their bad present-time habits is the fact that it's so dang fun and easy to be reckless.

But? it goes both ways: it's true, if cliché, that innovation and entrepeneuership are the greatest engines of progress. But these are risky endeavors: mostly, they fail specracularly. Why thank you, though I think one? could say more for "people like me" than that. Take the Big Names in science and the arts, for instance: Opened up whole new fields, changed the way we live, usually for the better. I don't think they did that as a means to some future goal. Hell, most of them /couldn't even imagine/ where their work would lead. No, they /couldn't help/ making those leaps and bounds, it was their nature. And crucially, /they were allowed to chase their dreams/.

Interesting concept, that of purpose-maximisation. In these years where we know that the? universe is made out of cells and atoms and we know why things happen and we know that time WILL go on, people are asking themselves what is their purpose in this reality? I believe undeveloped are undeveloped because they haven't got grip on free trade and rule of law. Even China could do much better with some human rights and less corruption. It is the whole? package - free trade and people. You cut one you cut both resulting in lesser prosperity. However there will always be some realms poorer than others. That would be case if capitalism was intrinsically bad, which is not. It's not perfect either, and this is were regulation and laws are implemented to (in theory) try to? fix the imperfections. And so poverty is not intrinsically related to capitalism exploitation. Many times it's due to corrupt governments, social-political movements or laws which isolate a group of people, discrimination, exploitation (regardless of economical structure), charity is not really directly related to any of these.

I also didn't like his tone when he referred Toms shoes (i might be bias here). He stereotypes them by stating that they give shoes to "some African nation". Yeah they have given shoes? to African Nations, but the founder's inspiration were shoeless kids in Argentina (and they have given to kids in United States). Charity is amoral? agree in the sense that, yes, there are? charitable organizations which don't deal with the core problems. Yet,someone has to do something short term. On the ADHD discussion: I really agree on the problem resulting from? the distance between stimulating non-schoolar activities (video games, internet, etc) and traditional lesson. BUT, even uploading class methods, there's an imperative that cannot be left away: learning things takes lots of work. Hard work. The advanced technologies develop advanced fun stuff that puts some brains to work but mostly, I think, they rest upon the sensitive stimulation and not intellectual effort. (lack of space)

True, there's misdiagnosis out there too (I meant to add that along with the over-prescribing and black market medication abuse points). However, my husband and brother would have benefited tremendously had they been diagnosed as children and not just as adults. He didn't call ADHD a myth. He called ADHD being an epidemic a myth, which I agree on. I do believe in ADHD, and you make a valid point, but it's also important to accept the fact that ADHD has been used as an excuse. In fact, I was almost diagnosed with ADHD when I was a kid, when the real issue? was that I wasn't being challenged enough at school because I was gifted, and that I was just getting bored (Not bragging). There are so many people out there who don't even believe ADHD is a real thing and Sir Ken perpetuates that myth. He has obviously never lived in close range to an? He doesn't understand that ADHD is a real affliction in most cases and that treatment (including medication) can be a positive life-changer. It should not make "zombies" out? of people if prescribed correctly, quite the opposite. The media is keen to jump on cases where ADHD medication has been misused, either over-prescribed, or sold on the black market to college students to get better results on their papers or tests.

My main gripe with this video is that Dan seems to be skimming over the issues/research and jumping to conclusions. E.G. some of our main motivators/drives are gathering resources and raising offspring safely. So, when he says punishment doesn't work because the parents were late even with the fine, he didn't consider the? fact that maybe 1: the fine was too small (would they be late if we were talking about 200 dollars?) 2: what if the punishment was getting the kids kicked out of the daycare?

I think the issue with these lectures is that it never explains how. I understand this is an awareness issue a not? a methdology debate. Talks of a paradigm shifts are not new, and are not entirely fool proof either. Mr. Taylor points out that empathy is the mechanism in which humanity must enact this change. Empathy itself is vague and relative. Isn't empathy a bit too simplistic? And how will enact such changes in the Edu. Sys.? What do need to different and how will we do it?

Being a physicist, a lot of what I do involves statistical analysis. In particular, there is a phenomenon known as the "Simpson Paradox" which arises when statistical averages are drawn while disregarding the groups which comprised the whole. In short, lumping groups together irrespective of the nature of those individual groups creates a misleading/false average. So, when he says "on average," my first question is: "What social groups comprised the whole from which the average is drawn?"?

Science can't explain the people who give away 100%. While,? actually, let's look at this scientifically. If people give 100% in a lab, and they obviously don't outside the lab, there is probably a difference in the lab that isn't present outside it. The difference is probably that giving money, in a scenario where everyone is watching what you give and all of them have an exactly equal ability to give, people would be more likely to give, and less likely to take. The Anna Sudstrom paper is about how perceptions of driving are related to reality not about the perceptions themselves- I sent you there because I thought you might be interested in the slightly tangential research. If the study was done well then personal definitions of average will have been controlled for- psychologists are quite good at this now! Psychology? research is a minefield I suggest you do some research and read carefully-abstracts are pretty useless I'm afraid.

With independence Scotland will no longer have to accept decisions being made on our behalf from a Government and constitutional system that has plainly failed. With independence or greater de-centralisation all constituent countries will better manage and overcome the social challenges we all? face. Great talk, he sure has energy. Hey RSA, just a thought for improving the quality, but if you could look at how microsoft teaches, they show the slides and then in a small picture show the video of the speaker. I find that format the best, instead of a kind of switching. Just giving advise on what I find works for me, but this? format is really nice.

Robert Kurzban should really exchange ideas with Iain McGilchrist (who also gave a RSA lecture), seeing as they reach near opposite conclusions on how the brain works from? the same neural premises, and Kurzban's reasoning seems imcomplete compared to McGilchrist's. Also, McGilchrist's model encompasses Kurzban's explanation as the left-brain worldview.

Ha ha, and I didn´t mention your point, because I thought it is obvious that positive thinking makes is more possible to see oppurtunities.Oh well, I guess we just got a lesson in how misunderstandings can happend. Of cause I am also all in for empowerment, I just whant some ethics to go along with is. This life approach really doesn't make us into anything else than opputunists, if we don´t do that. Of course it isn't their fault, I'm not saying it is. I didn't mention your point because I? thought it too obvious to bother affirming, you're right. Sure. There is a trend of blaming the victims, I know. But at the same time the 'victims' should find a way to empower themselves in spite of circumstances beyond their control, and self defeatist thinking does them no good. What I really don´t like, is the guilt that this thought about positive thinking is spreading. An ex:According to this thought, it is fat peoples own fault that they are fat, so now they do not only have to carry the burden of extra weight, social jugdement and all the difficulties? that comes along with being heavy, no, they also have to recognize that they are sinners, for not thinking happy enough.I think we should rather support and accept eachother, than deside what is the best lifeapporach

This saying, that tells us to? be happy and see opportunities all the time, where does it come from anyways? Is it a product of a cultural grounding thought, that we need to be productive and happy or else we do not get the best out of life? Why? Why can´t we cry or be angry and unproductive for a while, and let others carry us, untill we get well and can carry others? When a door closes, why is it not okay to feel the pain that comes with it, and let it have an influence on our life for a while?

I do agree on your point - but my point is, that even if you are doing everything you can to be possitive and see opportunities all the time, life can be a bitch sometimes, and I do not think it is very helpfull to those who experience unemployment, death in family, rape, hurricaines, depressions, mental illness, illnes in generel, ec. - to make it nearly a tabu to say "this is shit", before they sayi "Shit? happends - now lets move on...."

I never said thoughts are able to magically rectify any situation we? find ourselves in, I said 'positive' thought can lead us to become aware of opportunities around us. A lot of the skepticism here? is rather misplaced. I doubt any rational person would say thoughts directly influence reality. However, the way one perceives the world undeniably affects one's interaction with it, this includes actions an individual might take, and where it would lead them. Not really, you need a balance. Positive thinkers DO look at problems, but in a positive way. Ipod is coming out! Even though our profit is lower than as expected, I believe Ipod2 will generate better profits! But? how? Negative thinkers will go Ipod is a disaster! By saying it is society's problem it is very much every individual's problem as well. One individual might be afraid to break out and do something defying the norm, however the change can come from one, it often? does. Plato, Buddha, Einstein, Lenin or Hitler. As Prof Salecl points out, but then seems to come to the opposite conclusion, the problem is not the system, it is the way people respond. I'm lucky because I don't suffer from the "I have too many options" problem that most people have. Maybe because I am not afraid of making a mistake which probably comes from the fact that I am "comfortable in my own skin". In other words, I don't worry about "what will people think."
