This is not not how I would run a math lesson, but I wouldn't be opposed to it, either. Using the gestures is forcing the students to cross the mid-line of their body, and as Whole-Brain/Brain-Based Teaching theories propose, crossing the mid-line is an important strategy in linking learnings in both the left and right brain. Additionally, we have only seen this teacher's input and modeling. We have no idea how she is? checking for understanding, running guided practice, etc...just some thoughts.

Good work, I like your ideas. Could improve in a couple of areas though. 1) Don't use the words 'correct' or 'right'. It gives people the idea that there is no possible alternative (which in this universe is unlikely). 2) Keep using the word 'think' in questions - that's great! But wait longer to let people answer. Just a couple of ideas, and? above all keep trying new stuff, and keep improving.

At the post-secondary level, it should be? up to the students to attend and engage with the ideas/topics/material presented. While these techniques may work for this teacher, ultimately it will be the students' own levels of engagement that will determine whether or not they learn what is being presented to them. If students have to be coaxed into actually thinking/learning and made to "stay awake", it's a pretty sad reflection on contemporary society.

I absolutely love this! To the people who say this is a satire,? or a joke, or just repetition, you would be surprised how well this works! The students stay engaged, the lesson gets taught, and there might be time left over for conversations at the end... Despite the fact that this seems quite ridiculous, especially for older kids, there are some things I like about it. The biggest thing I like about? it, is that the kids are teaching each other. One of the main reasons I became a teacher was because of the saying "you don't truly understand something until you can teach it." The microlecture thing was interesting as well. The more learning you can leave in the hands of the kids the better. 30 seconds might be too short though.

What age? I can't? testify to all ages but in elementary classes (K-5) I have seen it work. To a certain extent I believe some of this is a fad. But I took some of the gestures and reactions and integrated them into my classroom in NOLA and it's worked; I've also seen veteran teachers use it and have it work. Just like a 12 step program, you take what you like and leave the rest. Some of this may work better than others, but you have to try it to find out.

I fully agree to the idea of this writer. Teachers must accept the fact that they need to adopt to the changing environment so that they can effectively achieve the needed skills? that they want their students to have, Teaching should be understood not merely teaching as we used to do but we facilitate learning inside the classroom. Teachers are not the main source of information. They just facilitate learning by allowing the students to develop and discover new learnings on their own pacing.

In the US we have mandatory education, 'No Child Left Behind', and a curriculum? designed to push students into college. College costs are rising dramatically as funding is being cut (ie, students borrow from their future income to go to school). I fully agree that education needs an overhaul. Civic and social competency by 8th grade, alternatives to college, and education as a right not duty. Technology should be used to democratize learning, making available globally.

there is always a teacher. For some a book combined with their own self-reflection is the teacher, for others they need more guidance and encouragement from a human teacher. ? You do not learn without a teacher (just realize the teacher is sometimes a combination of information & self guidance). I loved the video. For sure, people learn more by doing things themselves rather than by being told? about them. Secondly, learners are intelligent, fully functioning humans, not simply receptacles for passed-on-knowledge. Learning is not simply a one-dimensional intellectual activity, but involves the whole person. Thus the message taken away from any one lesson is quite different for different people.

Very well said my friend, and great points. Todays music is ok for the younger people, it is all they know frankly. Since birth, my kids have been exposed to GREAT bands and groups. I make sure that they get a little of this and a little of that and let them decide. My 10 year old LOVES the WHO, my 21 yo Daughter loves Janice and has all of her friends loving Janice Joplin also. This is a fantastic video! I am a Social Studies teacher and I am often appalled at how poorly my students read, and how much the hate reading. What is even? more shocking is that many seniors preparing to go to college are functionally illiterate, and have absolutely no clue that they are. So true! Would add: reading aloud helps students learn the voice of a text. That's one reason theatre helps reading. Also helpful, to begin to see reading as conversation across time and space, a link to other human beings we can question, converse with, argue back to. That's why reading aloud even to high? schoolers is important. Until they can HEAR Shakespeare, they can't read Shakespeare. Same for Emerson, or the Declaration of Independence. I would HATE this class. So much time is wasted. Why not just write down everything the teacher says, and then do what's needed to remember the information outside of class? By forcing the students to repeat the information? in front of the class that the teacher just presented, the teacher isn't allowing the students time to THINK about the ideas presented and interpret them from their own perspectives. College shouldn't be about regurgitating the professors' words back to him.

This seems to be a good way to encourage students to pay attention during class. I wonder how this approach would work with the elementary grades or children who are shy? I like that the teacher uses a lot of positive feedback and encourages students to listen, repeat and summarize what was taught. When the student doesn't know, the teacher encourages the students to meet with their neighbor which is a great problem-solving tool.?

How the instructor uses this is very malleable according to their own personality, and energy level. For some college classes I have used the? Scoreboard, and for others I have not. It just depends on the instructor and what they feel is necessary for their classes. One of the most powerful benefits of this approach is its flexibility for the teacher. First, if I have a student who is actually sick I only ask that they watch, and listen, and do not require participation if it would not benefit them. Secondly, 'oh sweet mama' is just a catch phrase to get attention. It is not scripted, and many different WBT teachers use different phrases. If you do not like it? do not use it.
