Well said! It is? also extremely difficult to study societies, cultures etc are fluid, forever changing and shifting. Most people would struggle with the abstract theories that make up a large portion of Sociology. It is hard to compile empirical data on human beings, we are far to complex to study in the same way that other physical 'real' sciences do. So the people on here claiming that Sociology is not a proper science are idiots. I know, I'm doing a degree at a renowned Scottish university.

Ignore the fact that sociologists never take a high level math course, a physics course or an astronomy course and probably have no clue what they're talking about while people in math related fields most likely do take sociology. The interesting thing to consider is the disciplinary backgrounds of these three theorists. Durkheim was officially a sociologist, whereas Marx considered himself an economist; Weber was trained in the historical economist tradition. Being an economist, Marx had a materialist view of history, which is what shaped his thinking that economic conditions drove institutions and the creation of the superstructure. Weber, coming? from the historical school, was interested in how values drove economies.

Social Sciences have a qualitative aspect and a quantitative aspect. Due to subject matter? they can not be approached in the same exact way as the physical sciences. They limit their use when they try to mimic they physical sciences and this has been a hindrance to their progression and usefulness. I can highly recommend Andrew Sayer - Method in Social Science if you want to actually learn about scientific method within social science rather than spouting nonsense about postmodernism - something rejected by the majority of those doing sociology. Brilliantly explains why positivism gives a false account of not just social but also natural science as well as setting out implications for social science? from taking a critical realist position and the need to do empirical work.

I am a people watcher. I like to watch people and try to figure out their story. I always go out of my way to help people. The sky is the limit if you really? get involved. Just because a person look homeless doesn't mean that they are. What really bothers me most is when the general public comments on a person because they are dirty, look funny, stare at a burnt child not out of concern but act like they are different.
