I'm an American ESL Teacher who sometimes uses Mr. Duncan's lessons in my Speaking and Listening classes. I could/would not use this one though because of how the word Gay is presented. We've made an effort to teach our young people not to use that word to demean or ridicule others by using it in such a negative way. It's not acceptable in the U.S. anymore? because it's offensive to many people. It's too bad since the rest of the video is good.

It is true that the media is doing a lot of propaganda to put the "gay" in fashion. Here in Brazil? was discussed in the congress the "kit gay", a propaganda to be sponsored and distributed by government in schools. It was not approved. Sexual freedom, yes. The problem with homosexuals is not their? particular choices about their sexual personalities. It is, in fact, the fact of that a majority of them make a point of being gaudy. Here in Brazil, "gay" is derogatory in this sense. As stated in this lesson, a "Fuddy Duddy" person. So, MisterDuncan was, at end, right.

i think you're totally missing out on the the point of the video. lourd doesn't have to say anything to educate. the video itself is educating dahil it raises questions, makes us think: "bakit nga ba kailangan perfect? yung accent natin pag nag i-ingles?" "bakit ba bobo ang tingin sa mga taong hindi marunong mag ingles?" +1...actually accent is very important especially in an english speaking working environment...dati nung kararating ko sa US gs2 ko matanggal accent ko...and then I said I should be proud of my filipino accent.so I compromised and now I can speak english with a filipino accent and "standard english accent"..it just depends on who I am talking to...for ex: if? I'm talking to a foreigner, I would use standard english accent, and if I am talking to a fellow pinoy, I would use filipino accent. simple

Para mas maintindihan ka ng maraming lahi... So you can? be more flexible... work anywhere. And in this country, people who speak proper English (and Tagalog) are somehow more respected. They get jobs faster than people who don't. I'm not saying that people can live with speaking/pronouncing right alone though. It's just a plus.

There is no such thing as a 'British' accent. Hugh Laurie has a sort of Middle Class South Eastern English? accent. Completely different from other English accents including London accents, let alone the even more different Scottish and Welsh accents.

Exactly, these are very local. I'm British, and whilst I recognize Hugh Laurie's slang words/phrases, I've only ever heard them on TV shows. Different regions of? a country and different social classes use different slang.

There are many differect accents in England, first there is low-class accent(like Dell Boy), they use alot of words like "you soppy, sod, flogging, nickt, laga...), then there is middle-class English, which sound most close to American, then there are 5 levels of HIGH Class accents, and only handfull of people can naturally speak class 5 english, and those are Royal? families, Noobles, Dukes... High class english is so hard to fake that even middle-class English cant fake royal English accent.

yeah there are SO many accents here. im from the south and struggle to understand people from the north. Having said that, ive heard pretty much all the accents here, and not once, have i heard 'CH' pronounced as 'SH'. This bloke even corrected himself at? the end lol. Also, do you know what the word 'bloke' means? its just a slang term for a man...
