Also, when you say "balance," I get the feeling you really mean "more upright." Skye is fully balanced. Both have their own weight and axis. Technically, the more each is? loose and grounded (soft bent knees and weight in the balls of the feet), the more balanced s/he is. Also, you dance to interpret the music. It isn't that lindy hop can't be refined and technical - but the standards are? different (not lower). Since the movement is momentum driven, the more relaxed the body and frame is, the more energy can be generated at the fully compressed or expanded end of the connection for the rebound (rubber band effect). Ideal frame is actually in engaging the core and back muscles while arms are relaxed to allow for free movement, firming up only at the end of compression/expansion.

Not to criticise - I understand where you are coming from, and from a geographical standpoint, makes perfect sense. It's just that it almost has a bit of a negative connotation because ECS as a style was specifically created for the Arthur Murray schools to standardise lindy hop for their curriculum. So from the standpoint of creative social dancers who enjoy styling, innovating, and occasionally coming up with a new step out of their? "mistakes," the name implies a very tight box!

No. You fail. That's not what east coast swing is about. The idea is to be as relaxed and unpolished? as possible. It's Savoy. Now if you want polished, you should go west coast dancing sometime. It's hard and your 100% more likely to cause an arm injury. And don't you ever dare say Skye and Frida aren't performance standard... they're part of the silver shadows. This routine is technical perfection in the world of swing. His feet are controlled (even the flairs he puts in them as in 1:21) he's using? the floor and you shouldn't spot in lindy. In fact that is one of the challenges many follows have if they come from a latin or ballroom dancing background. His balance is fantastic, as one of the things that makes lindy so awesome is that you stretch with the other person -- it's part of the connection. LOVE IT!

@Bradd10003 you're obviously not a Lindy hopper. i'm guessing you're a ballroom dancer to make a comment like that. That's fine, but you're missing a lot of background info. The point is *not* to be polished. Loose/relaxed movement is what it's about ..."white" as we may be, this is historically African American dancing, not European dancing. The aesthetic is quite different, so not having been exposed to this, it's understandable that you wouldn't get it at the same? gut level we do. Peace

lindyhop looks better loose, IMO. Yuval is too stiff. Sure for ballroom Yuval is great, but lindyhop looks better the way Skye and Frida do it. Now could they do ballroom? as well as Yuval? Probably not. But that is because its a completely different dance with a different set of rules.

For me, this style of dancing is the epitome of Lindy Hop. It's mostly socially led, which is to say highly improvised; it's musical; it's joyful; it's playful. There's? a nice interplay between the partners. The dancing is superb. Every time I see a highly polished routine, even one with amazing aerials and flawless execution, something about it leaves me cold. To me, a Lindy dance should always be something of an experiment. If it's too polished, the dancers aren't being playful enough.

I watched Yuval for a bit and he certainly enjoys his aerials. Technical, yes. Is it technique? No, it is not. Watch this video and you'll see 80% of it is still lead and follow. It's two people dancing WITH each other. No one worships Manning. We all just acknowledge and realize what he did the last 25 years of his life to show the world the joy of dancing social Lindy Hop and jazz dance. ? Yuval is not innovating anything with ill-placed look-what-I can-do acrobatics.

@Sigurd82, If this? is has is done, then swing is not a technical dance that would be nice to watch it. But I don't believe in your story, some swing dancers are technical and watching them is a pleasure. Type "Yuval Hod" for example. There is a world of difference in technique between Skye and Yuval. But there're more horrible professional dancers than Skye too. Often, swing people are close-knit groups who worship Manning and don't believe in the evolution of the dance, with exceptions.

hit up all the local dance compnys and such, look in the yellow pages, search online in your area on google maps, there's lots of ways? to Find a coach. Just make sure that he/she knows what their doing. That done work hard, practice at least 2 hours for every 1 hour of practice (I would say 5 but that's hard for people to swallow) and find a dedicated partner (the hardest thing for sure) and don't give up when the going get's hard! I've been dancing for 3 years now and love it!

I don't? like Skye. His footwork is unclean, the wheight is on his whole feet rather than on the balls which makes him look like Donald duck., the distance between each step is unequal and the position of the body is unbalanced. He should have started his reharsals by looking at this video like this one and correcting these mistake in front of the mirror. It's difficult but it's what professional dancers are supposed to do. Also, the double pirouette puts in evidence his lack of technique.

I first heard this song many years ago and I started crying immediately, although I did not hear the words. I? found out the name of the song, looked up its words and its history and found out that Flora MacDonald, an ancestor of mine was the woman who helped Bonnie Prince Charles escape to the Isle of Skye from those who were planning to kill him at Culloden. My Great-grandfather and family came to Canada from Skye to Prince Edward Island. I would love to visit Scotland.
