I just got back from my golf pro and the video he took of me showed that my shoulder angle was too flat causing the club to come too far inside but the biggest thing was my hips were moving toward the ball instead of staying put. Excellent job finding the cause. I'm thinking golf being what it is there are a multitude of causes for problems, including shanks. The spine/hip movement into the ball on the down swing is a common cause for anyone with a weak? lower back. Also try using something as simple as a tee, blade of grass or anything to mark the "boundary" for the toe then you cannot miss the sweet spot.

Thank you for that lesson. I have really been struggling with the shank on short-medium wedge game. I think your absolutely right? when you spoke about balance being the main factor on this issue. My balance isn't great and I'm sure when I hit a shank my feet tend to move forward towards the ball. Thanks again. I hope this cures it.

The feeling I get is that I'm hitting it off the toe. Most people who shank shots, usually come over the top slighly at the top of the backswing/beginning of downswing (the transition). If you get the feeling that you want to impact the ball with the toe of the club, it usually corrects the over the top movement. At the beginning of the downswing, try to get the feeling that you are going to hit it with the toe of the? club. It works for me. No more shanking.

I used to shank the ball a lot during games. I was watching a golf video, and a pro said he always feels like he is hitting the ball with the toe of the club. I went out the next day and tried to get the feeling of hitting the ball with the toe of the club, and I've never shanked it since. THE MOST TERRIFYING SHOT? IN GOLF IS THE ONE DIRECTLY AFTER A SHANK SHOT.

You? may not be releasing your wedges through impact which can cause the hosel to make contact with the golf ball first. Try making sure the club releases nicely through impact and you should be fine.

personally i think its bad advice, standing on your heels at setup actually causes you to stand? closer to the ball. naturally you have to move your weight towards your toes to make flush contact during the swing to make any sort of divot so standing on your heals will only further promote a shank. BUT THATS JUST MY OPINION...

Great tip!! for 5 years I have been battling the shanks from time to time and tried different hand positions to try and fix it. Never realized my weight was on the balls of my feet and not my heels!! 1st time back out was unbelieveable how my problem was fixed! So much more room for my hands to clear. This experience of shanking is quite new and odd for me. Coaching high school golf,,,eight years now, we leave for sectionals tomorrow and I'm leaving my clubs home. Have been hitting for last couple months...no issue...suddenly two days ago out of nowhere. take it from me, im the general public and suffered the shanks for years. this is what happens. your weight moves forward, instead of at the target. do this: keep your right foot heel on the ground when? you hit. don't let it come off of the ground until after. instead of jerking your right heel up, you will "roll" off of your right foot TOWARDS the target. guaranteed fix.

practice by placing the ball forward in your stance a bit and doing whatever you have to do to make contact with it (be it feeling like your shoulders are moving forward or your chest). Then after a few swings like that, bring the ball back to where you? normally swing and keep that same feeling in the shoulders, this will help get your club to contact the ball first and then the ground a few inches forward of the ball!

you aren't properly transferring weight onto your forward foot so you are coming down to the ground first and then the ball. you want to get your arms extended right around impact and? weight on that front foot. This will help you hit the ball first and then the ground, which is what you want to aim for. Also, make sure your body isn't rocking back and then forward on the down swing as this is probably too much for you to control through you swing.

Well, obviously you need to get a lesson? or two to cure the shanks. I can relate to this because I (usually a 14 handicap) got the shanks last year the day before our Mid State League tournament for the high school varsity. I shot a 126 on the 18 hole round that day (with full local news coverage) because of the darn shanks. But, one lesson from my buddy who owns Golf Etc. in Newark, and I was cured.

Use ur left hand fully span with your thumb nail in the top groove of the grip and your little finger on your left thigh. This helps maintain the correct distance from the ball. let me no? if this helps and or makes any sense. I'm a PGA pro btw not some have a go lol

About a month ago I had a huge boost of confidence, I'm a senior and play off an eight handicap, I had a real problem with alignment but fixed it. That matter resolved I had three games ( 73, 76, 74 ) which paid me off for my effort at the practice area. One of the best instruction video on the net today. Simple and precise. Last night i did the drill, i hit two buckets. No shanking. 2 days ago i shanked it twice with a 54 degree from 110 yards in the? middle of my round. I have to say there is nothing scarer than a shank. your yardage numbers are normal for our handicap level. I too feel more in control with a bigger club. Most amateurs never? take enough club anyway. However , the habit of swing easy isn't always the best decision to make. if you ask freddy couples he will tell you he always swings as hard as he can. He states that he can't emphasize enough that maximum acceleration through the ball is imperative. Try taking your 8 iron and hitting downward through the ball will increase ur yardage.

well i hav'ent hit a shank in 3rounds hit 79 5days ago and that could have been lower was going down the 13th +2 then hit 7 on par 5 then par par par 7again on par5 then a 5 on last hole....i think my problem was i was casting....i use to hit my 8iron 150yards with a full swing now i use 7iron to hit 150yards with 3/4 swing an it's great got total control of my ball if feels like i'm not even trying to hit the? ball now (feels like fred couples LOL) u should try 3/4 swing

Steve, I fixed me! Shanks are gone? and I can tell you how to fix it if you still have it. The traditional shank advice is hossle talk or your standing to close to the ball. Or, your your swing too much from the inside. Or, put your weight on your heels. It took me 5 buckets and a camera to realize my head moves and i sway! In simple terms I made my head as still as possible and the shanks went away. Now my only swing thoughts are athletic stance, don't move my head. Thats it!

It may not be very relevant but I'm experiencing the shanks 8 iron and up. It's the scariest thing ever. My confidence is shattered. I'm going to try all that Jeff recommended tonight at the range. I shoot in the? low seventies, my last two rounds have been in the high nineties. wtf?

This is by far the best drill and analysis I have ever seen of the shank. Well done coach!! I have never heard anyone address the grip and club face angle in takeaway. My 10 yr? old daughter is a very gifted junior and the shank is her nemesis. This is a solution drill.

upgraded shanking power? not really. these toothpicks aren't big enough do any significant damage. 4in blade is too short. handle is too small for a good grip. overall, the damage it can inflict is not wide or deep enough to be effective. using your bare? fists is a better choice for offense. the only good thing about it is that it can be concealed quite easily, but then again we have folders that can do as much and also with much better results.

Well more than likely there is a legal description of what constitutes a "bowie knife". I can't really give you any advice on that, its something that you'll just need to research and perhaps make a judgement call on. I will say, though, that most of the time, if you aren't doing anything criminal, knives aren't? a huge deal.

I can't really pick one over the others. THey are all excellent. The bowie and tokyo have a bit more stabbing power, the scimitar has more slicing power. The scimitar also has more handle? space, if that's a concern. Personally, I carry the bowie.
