It's still all about conformity, product not process, getting things to fit the square holes and finding ways to get 'good' instead of? 'satisfactory' conformity to that standard. What if the conforming to the model is the heart of the problem? Interesting too that it's said here that disadvantaged pupils are doubly disadvantaged by the low standards of the schools they attend, without acknowledging that the very fact that the schools are in disadvanataged areas may be why they can't manage.

The way is to work out streams of structured content completely different to what they have ever been before. My belief is in two streams, one focusing on logic/binary/mathematics and the other focusing on philosophy and englitlang whole language NOT phonics (worst thing ever), policing with regards to ethics - similar to general studies but? at an earlier age, and engineering e.g. meccano, pottery. The holistic approach is not the answer. If anything my bipartisan approach is far superior. lol.

All I'm hearing is "fix the problem before? an inspector shows up" How is this suggestion any different then increasing the number of standardized tests? It's at the point where teachers teach how to pass a test, rather then teach the information. It sounds like this suggestion actually encourages that behavior, and encourages teachers to only teach the material which will be tested in order to improve their rating prior to inspection.

"We need to raise standards"... WOW radical. More frequent Ofsted inspections doesn't increase standards. My friend has educated young people from troubled backgrounds all her adult life. She is incredible at connecting & getting positive responses from kids that the system has written off as unteachable. She? lost her job in the cuts & now teaches at a public school in a poor area of Liverpool. The teaching environment she now works in is incredibly restrictive, under funded/staffed & stressful.

I'm dyslexic (IQ of 121 just no good at righting things down) at my secondary school I was given no help for two years. I was told would an E in English. Mother had to push rather hard to get me help, and what did I get when i finally got it some a patriotic primary school teacher teaching me how to use full stops! After a year I kicked of fed up off the way I was treated, I was put back into a popper class with the only good teacher iv ever had and got nominal B's. Their? was more than that.

Limited education due to different socio-economic backgrounds is is exactly what governments want. Limit the competition for their scarce positions with poor education creates a permanent underclass that is willing to attack each other for table scraps. Teaching children from an early age the joys of learning must be the responsibility of the original caregivers, and shouldn't be blamed? on teachers. I don't think it's really fair to put all the blame on schools. Kids come from broken homes, they don't want to learn; those that do are engulfed into that culture. I'd argue the larger community issues are having the biggest impact at this point on "satisfactory" schools. Find ways to actually reach kids, get them involved in a community, develop their? self-esteem, develop their self confidence, help them find hope. These are things which aren't taught in "english" and "mathematics" classes.

I went to a "satisfactory" school, I got mostly Cs and I was in the top five of students. I was badly advised on my options, started a college course that wasn't right for me, dropped out, was forced by my mother to go back to college, two years later I got? three As and into a top ten university. Such a bad trek could've have been avoided if I was taught in an atmosphere that allowed me to get mostly As so I could've got a scholarship to a private college and maybe a path to an even better uni.
