Who is to say she didn't get scholarships based on both need and merit? I have a friend who got a full ride scholarship to Texas? A&M and she was both a deserving student by merit and need; she came from a working class family and was in the top percentage of her class, scored well on SAT and graduated slightly early from college (because she took 15-18 hourse per semester, plus summers/etc). It worked gr8 4 her!

I suppose we'll have to see in a few years. The name change cycle seems to be every twenty years (Negro->Black->African American->??) I'm curious about something. When did "Black" and "African American" become interchangeable? ? What I find interesting is most people who identify as "black" are simply shades of brown. Those who identify as "African American" can technically call themselves that only if they are born in Africa and migrated to the United States. Every opportunity scholarship or voucher program costs a fraction? of government public school education. There are very few scholarship competitions that involve only one person trying to get the scholarship(s), so I think anyone with half a brain would realize that the competition has multiple people, and the show, in fact, mentions the competition, and the fact that it is not just one person. Science is not all chance. Science requires a hell? of a lot of knowledge and skill before "chance" can have any possibility of garnering what you are seeking. I would agree with you if extremely unintelligent people made new scientific discoveries all the time. I don't feel the show at all made her seem like she was the only one doing this (nationally, at least) -- she may be the only one who discovered a possible cure for cancer, though (other than the professors or whoever was helping).

My response to your point is that science is coincidence. Thomas Edison invented the light bulb by trying over a thousand different chemicals. The chance he got the right one is coincidence and that goes for all discoveries in science. Do you think that? no other student tried to discover a cure for cancer? It's all chance.

Not trying to take away from her, but there are at least 15 students from my school this year that have? a "thousand hours" and many more who will have that. The reason is because everyone who does the Siemens competition or Intel Science Talent Search competition (which are NATION-WIDE) have to do an hours's work each day and then do research with a mentor which happens much more than people often think.

Read 50 or 60 journal articles (in The Plant Cell, etc., not Nat Geo), and do background research into them, as well as get in touch with scientists, and (while impressive) it's not remotely impossible, or even that difficult. I'm 16 and in a Science Research course and while I'm not doing anything quite that impressive, I'm? studying the genetic viability of the offspring of ATR-loss-of-function arabidopsis plants. It sounds cooler if I don't actually explain what that means.
