Horses' teeth grow, and when the back molars get too long, they grow hooks. This can cause the horse to drop feed while eating. I dont c evidence that secretariat was involved with this horse, he was born in 1972 & Ruffian born in 1974,? wasnt he still racing then. Bold Ruler was involved with both horses. So not secretariat indirectly.

Zenyatta is a big filly, this is true.... but her? times do not reflect the same calibar as Ruffian and Secretariat... not even close. Zenyatta has been a huge boom to Thoroughbred racing and of course the dummies in marketing have made an epic fail of not promoting her and her contribution to the sport better.. but the freaks like Ruffian and Secretariat.... so far.. they have been untouchable... even by Zenyatta, or Big Brown, or Funny Cide, or Empire Maker, or War Emblem, etc.

The thing about Ruffian.. she didn't just beat the fillies of her generation.. she beat those before her as well.... how many records did she toss to the curb? She is so unhurried in her? running... she just simply runs faster, much faster, than the rest of the horses. She truly must have had one of the most efficient strides ever blessed into a race horse. Just amazing.. and she would have whipped the pants off Foolish Pleasure.

Ruffian.. She was just so perfect and what made har perfect made her die. She had the mind of a true athlete, never giving in, never letting anyone get in front. No Zenyatta or Rachel would ever beat her.. Sorry, they're fine fillies, but Ruffian was just in her own class-above all other fillies. I doubt that even Ruffian would had beat Secretariat-Not in the Belmont-No one would ever had? caught the bullet in that race.

IMO, had the came through the same era of racing, and had been able to have raced against one another, Ruffian would have destroyed? Rachel Alexandra on the front end of a race. I believe Ruffian would have drawn away from Rachel, rather easily, because Rachel tends to tire at the end of a grueling race. Ruffian had unbelievable stamina. Usually drawing further ahead at the end of a race, not fighting to hold off the competition. TJMO.

Zenyatta is a 17 1/2 hand amazon! Bigger? than Ruffian, bigger even than Secretariat himself! In my heart I feel she came here to finish the job Ruffian started. No, sorry - though I love Ruffian I doubt she would beat Zenyatta. Even Secretariat might not be able to beat her. She a rare one of a kind Superhorse! Be thankful she's here now where we can all enjoy her.

There is no filly even close to Ruffian. NONE! Zenyatta is a very nice filly, so is Rachel Alexandra - neither of them could? touch Ruffian. Believe me, she was one of the greatest racehorses of all time, and had arguably the most natural ability of all. She was simply one of the very, very best!!

Ruffian may have very well have had as much natural front end speed as any horse, male or female, that I ever I saw on the racetrack. This filly was really quite something, to say the least. Such a shame that she broke down in the match race with Foolish Pleasure at Belmont. Her trainer, Frank Whiteley, never wanted Ruffian to participate in that race. But Ruffian's owners, and some other influential's? in the business bullied Whiteley into the race.

I saw Ruffian live at the Coaching Club American Oaks, later on in 1995, people dont remember this was a very? strong group of fillies, Copernica (One eyed Filly) was actually higher rated early on as was Hot n'Nasty, You had Sir Ivors Sorrow and Point in time, as well as Laughing bridge. Ruffian beat them all and beat them handily. One reason records where shattered, as this group could fly, Ruffian was just faster...

I don't know if it would have been such a good idea? to breed her to Secretariat just because of the inbreeding. With Secreatariat being a son of Bold Ruler and Ruffian being a daughter of Reviewer another Bold Ruler Stallion, I just don't know how that would have turned out. I don't like inbreeding on the sire line. I think Mr. Prospector or Northern Dancer would have been better choices. The inbreeding to Native Dancer would have been mostly on the foal's female side which is ok.

Personally, concerning Rachel, I would examine her legs each time she races, just to be sure she can take it and to make sure she is well. It would break my heart if nobody discovered? a fracture or a sprain in time for the race....

Ruffian was the greatest of all time. She ran wire to wire in the lead. Never headed and? in front at every single call point in every single race. She either equaled or broke the track and stakes record in every race as well. No other horse can make these claims. Even when she broke down she was were she had always been, in the lead. I love her like no other and she will always be my all-time favorite.

Some S detractors claimed his time was invalid bec track was fast all week. But Nack & Andrew Beyer nixed that. Following Barbaro's tragedy closely on blogs triggered my memory of Secretariat. Yes 12 furlongs. It was cut back to 10f and in 2010 all the? way back to 9f. The 1970's, when America had REAL racehorses. You have to be careful when comparing different races just on time, one really should consider the actual race conditions, but 2:27 4/5 at Belmont for 1-1/2 miles is an excellent time. In that decade only two Belmont Stakes winners won with better times - Affirmed 2:26 4/5 in 1978, and that horse in 1973 (ahhh, ummm, what was the name?)

Racing horses too young before they are fully developed! She was beautiful, full of potential and this is sad--should not have happened. Horse racing industry needs to? make big changes and take proper responsibility for the welfare of all of it's horses--including the ones who do not win races!! Starting? to race at the age of 2 yrs-old is a crime! We don,t even ride our own pleasure horses, before the age of (3). I'm the same. I've been a big supporter of Horse Racing since I was? younger, due to my grandad introducing me to it. I just love horses. However...With all the injuries and such i'm of a mixed belief. I watched the Grand National this year - was actually at Aintree course and such...I never want to go again because of them calling the horses "Obsticals" though I know its better than saying outright the horses have died...I don't know what to believe about it anymore.

I have watched all of Ruffian's prior races to this one. I cannot bring myself to watch her break down. I can't even watch the movie which is probably worse with the sound effects. I did watch the end of the movie however after she was hurt and the following events. I cried like a baby...it was sooo incredibly sad. I also saw the one part when she was on her way to the vet and? they panned down to her hoof...I was NOT expecting that. Like most people, I fell in love with her..it breaks my heart.

I've never seen much American racing, but a friend from the States told me about this fantastic filly called Ruffian, and how he thought she would've kicked sand in Zenyatta's face. Intrigued, I checked out her story, and having now seen every race she ran, I can see why she was, and still is, so highly esteemed. Her? death was an absolute tragedy, there are far too few memories of this astounding girl.

The? beautiful, but ill-fated Ruffian. I wasn't born when Ruffian raced Foolish Pleasure, but I remember watching the 2008 Kentucky Derby on TV and being devastated when Eight Belles collapsed after the finish line, having won second. The lone filly amongst all those colts. Although a number of these horse racing stories have less than happy endings, there is nothing so magnificent as watching a Thoroughbred run.

Think about it...When her flank hit the door of the gate, it pushed all of? the pressure onto her front right leg. While a horse is running, they are going so fast that all their pressure goes into that one foot at the front depending on which lead their on. She was also soft boned, if you look at her Bloodline history, Native Dancer started the Soft Bone Genentics. It was a shame really, she was a wonderful horse that Ruffian.

I totally agree. I despise the term "destroyed"; it sounds so cold and callous, when in fact it is anything but. The more commonly used term "humanely destroyed" isn't much better, but at least these horses are given a painless injection to tranquilize first and then stop the heart. If? only all horses could have such a kind fate. Thanks for the comments.

My father was an avid thoroughbred racing fan. Which rubbed off? on me as well. After seeing Secretariat win the Triple Crown in 73'. I was also fortunate enough to get to see this magnificent filly race as well. But was unfortunate enough to witness her tragic break down at Belmont on that July day in 75'. Ruffian was special. She stood second to no horse of her era. I agree with Frank Whiteley's assessment. A match-race never proved anything. Except that you're pushing your horse far too hard.

@queenluciaa The fact that she (Kincsem) ran in the late 1800's also makes her? a hard pick, but 54-0 is pretty tough to equal. Then we come to the present day, with my personal favorite Zenyatta. VERY big horse, that was never really tested except for Blame beating her by a nose in the Classic. Its difficult to pick because they all raced in different era's. Do I think that Zenyatta could have beaten Ruffian or Landaluce... She probly couldnt have, but I'd love to watch that race.

I think that Ruffian is remembered because of the fact that in her 10:10-0-0 record she was never challenged... for that matter she never let? any horse in front of her. I also think that Landaluce was a real phenom, I think I read somewhere that her combined margin of victory was 41 1/2 lengths, which is ridiculous for a 5 start juvee. Its probly hard to say she is the best filly ever though, the horse Kincsem was 54: 54-0-0 in her lifetime. cont.

My father and I, rest his soul, watched this race live on CBC? when I was a young teenager. My father was an avid racing fan, which rubbed off on me after watching Secretariat win the Triple Crown in 1973. I've been a lifelong racing fan every since!! But this race was really tragic. Foolish Pleasure was a very good colt. But had she not broken down, I really believe that Ruffian would have defeated him on that day. I think she was just faster than Foolish Pleasure. JMO.

However, while researching Ruffian as a possible song subject, I collected a lot of video clips, and it would seem a waste not to use them. I think I may have confused myself, in a regular race, the horse in front doesn't usually win, from what I've seen and my experience with horse racing, the horses stalking or the power houses in the back are the ones to win,? being a leader in a race and win is a tought feat, and one of the hardest ways to race. Actually in? match races the winner is usually the one who went to lead and stayed there. With only one other horse running against you, you can not stalk from far back. A 2- horse race is totally different.

Well if we go by that kind of knowledge, then we can't say Ruffian was greater than Foolish Pleasure, because they never finished the race. Yeah, she was ahead when she broke down, BUT, many horses lead races the entire way, only to be over? taken by the horse stalking or from farback. It's actually well known human knowledge that males are usually stronger, faster, and better for physical activities. And that's proven.

What? I don't like LL, he knows his horses very well and was a great trainer, but he was terrible at pre and post-judging. Before SEC raced, he said, "That horse? is too good looking to be a good racehorse." And look what happened, SEC turned out to be one of the greatest racehorses ever. Absolutely! Ruffian was IMO the greatest filly to ever touch the track, but she wasn't the greatest racehorse to ever race.

I'm sorry, I can't argue with close minded, naive people, Who believe a filly could have competed with the greatest racehorse to ever touch the track, who? after three races all within close proximity of time, broke records, and set a world record being pulled up. And those records still stand. I wonder what Sec would have done, if he had been urged and whipped to go faster in all three of those races...?

Secretariat's daddy, Bold Ruler, was her paternal granddaddy, the? genes were there. Too bad the bone weakness in her sire, Reviewer and dam Shenanigans was there. eerily, they both broke legs and had to be put down, Shenanigans, dam, after a surgery.

She partially broke one of her hind? legs in the race, about three lengths from the wire. Even with this injury she went on to win impressively. What a powerful filly.

I saw Ruffian live at the Coaching Club American Oaks, later on in 1995, people dont remember this was a very strong group of fillies, Copernica (One eyed Filly) was actually higher rated early on as was Hot n'Nasty, You had Sir Ivors Sorrow and Point in time, as well as Laughing bridge. Ruffian beat? them all and beat them handily. One reason records where shattered, as this group could fly, Ruffian was just faster...

You're a very lucky man to have seen Ruffian run in the flesh; I am more than a little envious. :) "Freak" is the perfect word for her brilliance. Mr. Bracciale also rode Ruffian in the Astoria - two races previous to this one, according to the DRF chart - the first of only two times Ruffian was not ridden by Mr. Vasquez. I was at the Spinaway that day. This is the only one of Ruffian's races where she was not ridden by Jacinto Vasquez. This day, Vincent Bracciale rode her and the only reason that Ruffian was as high as 1-5 was because Laughing Bridge had an easy time in one of? the preps - the Schuylerville as I recall. But Ruffian was too much and well-deserving of that great designation: "freak".

Great race this was.? I can't believe Laughing Bridge's trainer thought his filly could win this. Pretty magnificent to think that she was moving so great the cameras could only film the 2nd and 3rd place horses. The other fillies couldn't even come close to beating this filly. This was her best race she ran I believe.

it was because the owners really wanted to prove she was the best horse period. boy or girl. and they thought the only way to? do that was to beat the best boy. trainer was complety against it, but everyone was pressuring him. watch the movie, the book was awsome too. most of the movie was cold hard facts, they did a pretty good job on it if you ask me.

I looked it up to refresh my memory. The original plan was a 3-way race between Foolish Pleasure, Master Derby and Avatar, the classic winners. But Avatar had already shipped to California. Ruffian was brought in as a substitute for? Avatar. Leroy Jolley objected, worried his jockey would have to concentrate on Ruffian, allowing Master Derby to steal the race. Believe it or not, Master Derby's stable was paid $50,000 to stay out of the race.

Such amazing patience and ability. She was so content to slow the? pace at a mile and a half them maintain plenty for the stretch, the final quarter in 24:3 for a young 3-year-old filly going 12 furlongs. Wow. I still can't fathom why they accepted a match race against a top colt just 2 weeks after she ran a mile and a half. It made no sense for Foolish Pleasure, either. It was only 4 weeks after he finished the 3 Triple Crown events, barely losing the last two after winning the Derby.
