You couldn't, and still can't, tether for? free. You can't speed your phone up by using a CPU tuner, because you need Super User permissions/root to be able to do that. And themeing of the whole OS is not possible without root, also. So, you can't do all of this stuff without root.

Haha, I know right?.. A lot of people who have Android phones are people who swapped over from iOS or people who are familiar with jailbreaking. If they're not, it's just one Google? search away.
