I agree with you. Person Centered theory sounds "easy" but it really isn't. From my experience from Lay Counseling and my psych. courses (going for an M.S. in Counseling, MFT). It's tricky to articulate this therapy to accurately reflect and? show unconditional positive regard. People can't "read" people because they're not them.

....I've seen some REALLYreally bad therapists out there who go about 'counselling' people just to satisfy their own ego,? be directive awith the client and falsely & arrogantly think they understand their world - then little if any long term therapeutic change occurs. I know people will disagree, which they are entitled to do so, but please don't be blinded by just looking at things skin deep. Person Centred training is very experiential and you can't just 'read up' on it and know it all!

Unless you are trained in the person centred approach and can be? truly present, you're not really going to truly understand how it works and how it facilitates people exploring their own feelings, able to actualise and self heal. The same can be said if you don't understand CBT, TA, Psychodynamic etc... No one model is 'best' and counselling isn't a miracle cure, nor does it work for everybody....

OK, insight. 1. Gloria was living in an age where women who slept with men outside of marriage were considered trash. As a grown woman she wanted a relationship with a man, but did not really want a commitment, so her first instinct was to appease her sexual drive. 2. she wanted to be told that what she was doing was ok and she could continue to live in a lifestyle she felt morally wrong. 3.? she only wanted to be validated as a person. Roger's style fulfilled that need.

Yes, some people do just want to "rent a friend" as it were i suppose. But the aim of person centered therapy isnt to be someones friend, or to tell them things will be ok, because it wont. Things go wrong but they do not stay terrible all the time, like things generally dont stay amazing all the time. A lot of? people will seek counsel for their own reasons and when they see how different it might be from their expectations, they get scared and stop going or chose someone else.

I was basing that on her statement that basically said she thought she was a nice guy but? wasn't helping her. I know Rogers is respected but I feel like his methods can reinforce bad or overly passive behavior in a lot of situations. I'm glad it works for you but some people just want to rent a friend for an hour or have people tell them they are ok, or to have someone rub vaseline on their bottom and tell them it is special and different than everyone else's, to quote a movie.

to continue, I know this method of therapy does not work for everyone, vice versa with any type of therapy i suppose. From my point of view, it seems to have an effect on Gloria by observing how she reacts to what Rogers said/to what she has begun to think. Whether she would continue to? seek that type of therapy again is unknown, so its long term affects are indeterminable by us. I just dont see how you can assume you know the therapy hasn't affected her at all.

If you read the end of my statement, i said that i didnt assume you were arrogant or close minded. I do agree that it seems like an unorthodox approach. Your basing your "common Sense" on opinion, persona centered therapy works on a variety of people, else it wouldnt still be practised and discussed like any other method of therapy. It has and is working for me and works very well for many people i know who have also recieved different methods of therapy with? negative results.

you are assuming that you know how Gloria inwardly feels in general, which is impossible for anyone to know but her. Person-centered therapy focuses on personal organismic growth (as carl rogers explains in most of this publications of late) I do get that it seems unaffective, that is how i felt when first recieving person centered therapy, but after opening up as a person, these methods are easier to comprehend. Not to say that you are? a closed/arrogant person of course.

that's real house music. it touches you here *taps heart* *points to head* *points to feet* - music to move you in each and every way. what could be better? I? know all old farts like me hark on about "the good ol' days" but boy oh boy *these* were AMAZING days (nights). the vibe, music, people, clubs, DJs, rugs, even the damn flyers..all had that special feeling. the test of this great music is that it still sounds brilliant 25 years later, sober in the daytime. Great post! Back in the early 70's, my girlfriend and I visited the Roy Rogers Museum in Apple Valley, CA. We were given the? royal tour. Afterwards, our tour guide asked if we would like to meet his parents. We didn't realize that the tour guide was Roy Rogers, Jr., aka Dusty Rogers. Dale and Roy came out to meet us and spent a good half-hour talking to us. I grew up with this show and Dale and Roy were larger-than-life heroes to me. What absolutely wonderful people. A great memory!

We were so poor, I didn't get to go to the movies, but we did get a tv in 1953, so I got to see the tv shows. Wonderful! With them gone, along with the? museum, I feel like part of my life is missing. I'm glad Dusty is doing what he can to preserve the legacy.

Oh hell no one will disagree with you the Canadian Health Care is still way better than that in the US. I have friends in Canada they know to appreciate what they have there, but what can you do the American Health Care system? is never going to be perfect especially since such large corporations have a say in everything since they lobby congress. I worked for a couple of companies the only time I had great? coverage was under my moms when I was a teen and she worked for a hospital. Many companies often times will get the lowest tear of health care to save money. The companies with good health care are starting to fall apart because of changes in the economy or have changed their health care to benefit their pocket. Thank you that means alot to me :). I also? met Eric Clapton at a Pawn Shop and I was playing their guitars. I guess Clapton heard me playing and he came up to me than said "hey how long you been playing?" when I saw him I nearly shit my pants lol he my idol! I said for only 3 years Mr. Clapton but I never had a lesson in my life because I can never afford them :(. I'll have to watch the Ellis video again -I couldn't keep up with his seemingly forceful and quick-paced technique; but it looked like Gloria was responding? to him well. Perls was both amusing and thought-provoking, butI felt that he only ended up proving what I already knew: people who receive negative stimuli will close off, exhibiting fear, anger and sometimes laugh nervously. Gloria may have learned more about her defense mechanisms, but I couldn't see much else coming from that session.

Thank you for these videos. I'm just about to begin a Counselling course, so? these videos really help me see the different techniques used. I felt very connected with Rogers' approach. From my perspective, I thought his 'mirroring' quality was very interesting. Perhaps this is a biased view, because I have been on the receiving end of this technique and felt it helped a great deal. At times I was frustrated at not getting direct answers, but overall I gained more inner clarity.

yes, if the counselor were to give the client solutions, it would foster dependency, that the only way the client can solve their problems is by coming to the counselor. Also any advice/solutions the counselor gives to the client would? obviously not come from the client, and would therefore not take into consideration the subconscious feelings the client has, then when that solution/advice flops, the client would blame the counselor, which would damage the therapeutic relationship.

I know Rogers is good, but I still think that client was an easy one. I wish I could see? him counselling some troll who doesn't give a s#$@ about anything and hate the world. I'm curious to see how he would act on that case.

A lovely piece of counseling, but I don't agree with the sentiment expressed by many that seem to imply that Rogers was doing something that no one else can do. He was in many ways first, but others -- you and I -- can and should learn to use active listening, permit our compassionate? selves to show but not predominate, and be present in the moment. Easy? No. But we can do this, in or out of therapy.

As a psychotherapist in Glendora, CA, I have to agree with Roger's Person Centered approach. It is about the client's goals and needs.However, I find I must be more directive at times? as well as impart information. I guess I'm eclectic! Thanks for the video. 626-335-0903 for counseling...

What a lovely may Carl Rogers seems to have been. And what an invaluable series? this was! Check out Fritz Perls and Albert Ellis' session with Gloria if you haven't already. So fascinating how totally different their approaches were. Thanks for posting.
