Reno's art "district" is only like? 5 blocks, the buildings are old, dusty, straight out of an older time era(not in a good way), drunk driving is a huge problem along with depression(which everyone's in denial about), honestly as a long time resident I would not suggest anyone to raise a family here the schools are horrible neither college students it's not appealing at ALL to the younger generation....NO rude comments just being honest

The horizontal stabilizers Trim tab broke off which caused an immediate 11G pitch up (what they estimated it would have been) which should have caused the pilot to black out immediately, the plane then stalled and fell back to the earth. The pilot was already unconscious when the plane? dove back to the ground. He may have also been dead due to the force that he would have hit his head on the instrument panel when the trim tab broke off. It's not the pilots fault.

Now i wasn't there but it definitely wasn't a minor crash. I talked to a couple people that were sitting right? there including my sister that said they had to duck down from flying parts that landed in the stand. Imagine looking next to you and seeing what used to be your friend with a plane part on top of him. . .

I? was in the box seats. I wanted to run burning felt like an ant unsure which to run to avoid being hit and the at the last minute the plane turned a wing and flew over my head. All I could do is pray to Creator to care for any victims and the pilot. A day I will never forget. I left without helping because my boy was by my side. No explosion though. Thank God.

I'm glad to hear you're alright. From everything I hear though, the late Jimmy Leeward could not have made any control changes one way or the other. Forthese highly modified? P-51's flying this fast, the trim tabs on the elevators must be all the way down to counteract the P-51 wanting to lurch upward.That trim tab tore away, as slow motion video clearly shows.When that happened, the P-51 shot upward instantly, forcing Jimmy into a 10 G climb, which would knock any human unconcious.

Tests show a human body subjected to over 40g's of acceleration as well as 20g's of centrifugal (ascending) g-force can survive. I believe they have tested humans in the centrifuge at over 20g's without breaking a bone in their body (although they would? have passed out). A normal healthy person can usually sustain a maximum of 5g's w/out a G-suit and stay awake, however a fighter pilot can routinely sustain 9g's with a suit and controlled muscle contraction and remain conscious.

Sorry, I watched all the videos of the crash. I does not look like Jimmy made any last second and definitely not a last minute input to save anyones live. You were just lucky? you were not in the path of an out of control Mustang that has stopped Galloping for ever. A piece of history destroyed.

At 10+ instantaneous G's, he was crushed into? his seat. Vertebrae, ribs, neck crushed. If he only weighed 100LBS from the waste up, he really weighed 1000 lbs at the time. Lookup the 1998 Voodoo Chile incident with Bob Hannah. Same exact thing happened, except he was coming down the chute at the start of the race, came to at 9,000 feet, then regained control of the plane and landed it. He quit racing after that.

It is terrible what happened but this crash will make the sport safer on many levels. It's been around for nearly 50 years and it should not cease because of this tragedy. There are numerous areas for? improvement they can work on without sacrificing the thrill of the event. There was a mechanical failure at the worst possible moment and it will be determined exactly what happened. One thing is for sure; Jimmy Leeward was not at fault and did everything he could do to avoid hitting anyone.

I guarantee the NTSB has been scouring you tube as well as questioning anyone and everyone about video? and stills of the aircraft seconds before impact. If what the A&P speculated about the seat was true, Leeward would have had a terrible time trying to control the plane, much less if any control cables may have been pinched if they were routed directly under the seat. I would still like to know with certainty that the seat would have had to be collapsed for his helmet to be out of view.

Good job. I was 20 rows up from the impact point in the grandstands. When the plane's nose pitched down from inverted, it was aimed right at me. I knew I didn't have anywhere to go. I watched it but never saw the lett bank that started just above the stands. Whatever happened to Jimmy, it appears that he somehow made that input just in time.
