any useful definition of "scripting" would have perl and java on the same side. and so far your definition of compiled does have java and perl in the same side as they are both turned from source code into bytecode that the? virtual machine then "executes". running a perl program is like pressing the "play" button in a vistual studio c++ project. it gets automatically compiled and executed.

it IS a useless classification. what exactly is it useful for? interpreted is a useful classification, it tells you that you need a virtual machine to interpreted the bytecode of the language. scripting seems to imply something like bash, wchich perl isnt. perl is closer to java than to bash. and java is closer to perl than to c++(even if the syntax looks similar to c++). in both langauges? you write your program, and it needs to be compiled into bytecode before it gets interpreted.

I agree that the derogatory aspect is bad but I don't think of a 'scripting' language as a lesser language, I argued that from my original post they are all programming languages. I don't think it's useless, I think it serves a purpose in distinguishing a little bit further than 'interpreted' can. Anyway I also don't see the big deal with how I choose to classify a language. I still classify them as compiled, or interpreted, I just slap on an extra classification for some where it? applies.

That's a stupid point. this is nothing like that, and all programming terminology and classification was invented from thin air and? used and applied. There are tons of terms out there that didn't exist before a group of developers sat down and thought about what to refer to a specific technology as. that? is a very common fallacy called "ad populum". just because something is popular doesnt mean it's correct. before 1492 most europeans thought the world was flat. the term "scripting language" tends to be flung as a pejorative to belittle certain languages and the people who use them. that's one of the reasons i oppose to it so readily. java is no more compiled, or less interpreted than perl. the only difference is WHEN the "compilation" happens.

I'd think someone who has been around the block as long as you have wouldn't be so hung up on semantics as they are very adaptable and agnostic in programming and have evolved and diverged and expanded in many? ways over the decades. Words are just words, the interpretation of those words is relative, and the classification is defined it's in many books authored on the subject matter, it's in many courses in universities across the world (NZ and USA for sure), and it's accepted by millions.

they* you can ask them yourself. I've held conversations with authors of Python, and PHP in IRC, PHP acknowledges it readily on their website. Anyway I don't care about convincing you of my position, my position is adaptable, I take in vocabulary to describe something and don't give it any meaning beyond what I interpret it as. That means that the descriptor I use to describe PHP for example, is irrelevant. All it does is slightly extend the classification of a? type of programming language.

I've been programming since? 2001 and have written in C++, Java (A limited amount), Python, PHP, node.js (Javascript), C#, bash, haskell, and lua. I don't think that makes my opinion more valid than anyone elses, just like I don't think your opinion becomes more valid because you've been doing it slightly longer than I have. are you sure you understand it completely? because you seem to? be making the case that WHEN the "compilation" of interpreted languages happens makes some sort of a difference... what is known as compilation, turning source code into an executable program, just doesn't happen in perl, java, php, ruby, etc. what happens is a transformation of source code into bytecode to be interpreted by a virtual machine. you can call it compiling, but it really isnt...just like html isnt programming...

I'll take a shot at a slightly less obvious list: 1. Create "proof of concepts". A minimal working example of, say a chatbot, gives you a feel for an aspect of programming. 2. Learn Java,? Python, C and Lisp. That should cover most styles of programming. 3. Learn to use a command line properly. 4. There are a lot of cool libraries out there. Use them! Image rendering or GUI building is pretty easy nowadays. 5. Try python if you haven't. It's a great "fallback language" for most tasks.

I'm 14 and I customarily redeveloped most of my programs to induce performance. I personally LOVE software development, and I would not call it "Programming". It's not? a professional name to be honest. It makes it sound amateur and novice. And software development is sitting in front of a monitor all day, but I don't care. Not sure what you're getting at. Maybe you've misunderstood NaCl. It is not "software as a service". NaCl modules run on the user's CPU, just like when you download and run an exe file. It's just that they run within the browser window and can interact with it like a client-side script can. It has no more or less privacy? implications than traditional client apps or web apps.

We are still evolving but in a more horizontal way than vertical. What I mean is that instead of evolving in a way that has made us more competitive as a species, we have been evolving in a? way that just makes us more diverse and not much else. Crockford's point still holds. We have not changed in the past 10,000 years in any ways that make us better, we are simply more diverse. I think it's a combo of both things. I smoked for? many years and I know exactly what Crockford means: it's an addictive habit, but the hardest thing about quitting is there is no palpable sense of danger from it in my gut. I have to reason logically about why I should quit. In fact, the thing that let me quit for good was exercising more, because it gave me an immediate and visceral disincentive. Without that, in my head I knew it was bad, but in my gut it was like, eh, no big deal.

Great talk but I have a nitpick. Crockford claimed that "there has been no human evolution since the Paleolithic Era". That's just? plain wrong. Humans have never stopped evolving. If anything evolution has greatly accelerated in the past 10,000 years. Search for current human evolution for more info.
