This is exactly right. The virus/worm/malware is saved on the hard drive, which stores information even when the computer is turned off (see my video on hard drives and RAM on YouTube for more details on this). The virus gets included in what the "baby? learns" and continues to be a problem.

It's not about what each can and cannot run though. I see online OS's useful for transferring files, online back-up, testing applications,? seeing a new GUI and removing the need to install certain programs on your hard-drive, as they could be used straight through an online OS. I feel the same. It seems that? the UC system has forgotten that poor people have the right to learn also. It is now impossible to attend UC Berkeley these days due the abusive increase in tuition each year or each semester to say the least. It seems that only mom-dad rich kid can attend a "public" university. I don't see how this university can still be called "public", for it is more expensive than a bunch of other private universities. I don't have to attend college but my daughter can't.

Poor people might not have a good connection nor the interest/awareness about this or the necessary english proficiency. But it's one step closer and definitely a great thing. The good thing I see is that it makes this knowledge available to? people who do not want to be enrolled in universities or do not have the time for it.

we're gonna have to ditch the binary system , just take a look at how signals work in the cells .. the output of? a neuron depends on the frequency and the amplitude ( inhibiting and exciting ) of multiple inputs ... that allows to huge amounts of programming possibilities on the lowest levels but adds up even a greater complexity when it comes to higher levels .. i'd say we'll be lucky to teach a computer to understand 1+1=2 the way we do :p

It is a legitimate point though that OSX users are less vulnerable to malware. If I were getting a computer for my grandmother, I'd consider an iMac with OSX with? that being a big reason. What Apple fans don't seem to realize is that OSX has some of the worst security vulnerabilities of any operating system (OSX was among the last to apply ASLR, e.g.). It's actually even less secure than Windows in many respects, which might surprise people. BUT......

It's Solaris with "looking glass" for the GUI. I liked it a lot, but I simply don't use Solaris because I'm a gamer. If a geek ever developed a windows layer (api's that help install, run and contain windows programs and exes without an emulator) i'd most certainly use it as my? main OS. i guess i'll answer my own question since i dual-booted win 7 and ubuntu a while ago now lol. wubi is not stable at all, i ran it for about 2 weeks and it would freeze constantly and i would have to hard reboot. it was also much slower than the real dual boot and only had a maximum of 30 GB? storage.

The first has a major limitation of actual OS space, and some virus could actually delete? C:\Ubuntu and fuck it up lol. Installing it standalone will allow you to have more control of how you manage your partitons. Of course, such steps are recommended for advanced users.

I see you deleted your next comment. Perhaps you decided to actually look? up Maxine VM and realized what a fool you are. Anyway, if JavaOS isn't "Java" enough for you, try JNode. The only parts that aren't written in Java are the minimum required to load and boot the rest and allow Java code to interact with hardware.

For example, when I first had to use the terminal in Linux, I followed online tutorials to install packages and navigate around the filesystem, however at the time I didn't consider the terminal "easy to use". Today, I think very differently about the terminal: A powerful? tool yet different than a GUI. Well I actually prefer the terminal to the pkg managers, but I think a novice user? would literally freak out if they had to install a program using the terminal. Pkg managers are making things much easier, but as you said as more people start using Linux, the "bad guys" will start to turn their attention to Linux as an additional target.

Well I didn't say that Linux was as easy to use as Windows, or even close, but it is getting better. One thing that I've seen is that Linux supports? more hardware devices than it did 2 or 3 years ago. I agree that using the terminal, for example, to do very basic things (such as installing programs), might make someone turn away from Linux.

I'm not installing Android as a main system; I'm installing it alongside Maemo. Whether or not Android is a "marketing ploy", it has many useful? apps that are not available for Maemo or Meego, making it worthwhile to dual-boot.

In maemo,? everything works. I haven't used Meego for quite a while, but Nemo everything works (Nemo is what Meego turned into). I haven't tried the features in Kubuntu Mobile because it seems to be rather unstable. As for android, everything works except for voice calls and GPS (SMS works fine, as do all apps I've tested).

For multimedia and browsing? Not really; the N900 is more of a developer device. But it depends. Also I am not sure of the HD2's specs, but it? probably has more ram (which would help when using the web) - but on the other hand, the N900 can do things like run desktop Firefox or VLC.

Well then. The N900 may not have the best hardware, but that is because it is a - hmm - 2 year old phone already! And there is little to no lag under Maemo or Android. As for bugs: Not really. My? Comet has more bugs than the N900, because there is an active community fixing them.

When I started to learn Linux like Ubuntu Linux and I was using windows XP. I just think windows stuff stays with Windows Linux or Ubuntu Linux.(Which was the Distribution that I was using at the time.) Or Mac OSX will stay within their own environment. And I don't usually say well i could do this in what ever environment I had. I looked learnt? and did what I needed to do and learnt how they did it in that Environment. And never had a problem after that.

Chris you are 100% right, so many people when I was at college looked at my laptop running Linux and ask if it could run such and such Windows app or they didn't like it because they couldn't do something on it they could do in Windows and when I said its not Windows so think of it as something different they didn't get, most people who have only used Windows find it so hard to use anything else I started using Linux on and off from about the age of 14 and? did have a old Mac running 10.4.

I tried this out briefly last night... there are some glitches when uploading audio 1.m4a not compatible 2. sometimes when playing a song with the 'mp3player' you get half the song Also I had a problem with the 'browser' it took me to my personal website once but after that it would only work with the EyeOS? website.The concept is great! I think it should be accessible to the end user not only software developers. of course there would have to be some tweeks or time time getting the hang of it.

I switched to? Apple after the Vista debacle, but quickly came back to Windows7 after I found out about Office 08 being crap on a Mac and that many devices simply have no drivers in MacOS. Yeah MacOS is fast, it's nice to look at and has some nice gesture support BUT many software packages are inferior or incompatible with Windows and other devices. The Mac file system is different, so have fun synching (backups and databases) with the rest of the world. I am a LOT more productive with Win7

I would have to say Workbench on the Commodore Amiga. First OS to do multitasking and it was amazing on 256k. The Amiga was so far ahead of its time from games like Turricain, awesome arcade conversions that were superior? to the actual arcade like Rainbow Islands, to the use of Deluxe Paint. Loved the Amiga. Next would be GEOS on the Commodore 64. Seeing the C64 do desktop publishing,running a GUI was a treat amongst itself and was fast too by C64 standards that is.

There is TONS of stuff you can do with Linux that's why Linux is used in almost everything from cell phone , to servers , and super computers ... Supercomputers today most? often use variants of the Linux operating system.Linux has tons of fun software like ... EasyStroke Mouse Gestures , Compiz Fusion ,Phatch Photo batch Processor, Parcellite, OpenShot , Blender 3D, PhotoFilmStrip, vsftpd + filezilla = any easy to set up home sever. I grew up using XP and? currently have windows 7 ultimate X64 how ever if my system ever messes up I plan to dual boot with ubuntu. But I don't know. I have messed with ubuntu in a virtual machine it wasn't much I found I could do with it.

I would have to say windows 7 because it came out with snap together feature and i have Linux Ubuntu right now and i like how you can't get viruses easy but i think it sucks because you cant do anything you can do on windows because? you can get itunes but you can't sync your ipod to it and i think that sucks.

I am starting to dislike windows more and more because of Drm. Because nobody really owns windows software, I like Linux way more. Mac you don't own the software either ,but they are less controlling then? Microsoft.,but I heard from some mac user in some areas that is slowly changing. I prefer Debian to Ubuntu now a days, I use Lenny 5.0.4. I Use ubuntu 10.04 on my laptop, it work decent but the graphics cards crashes on me because of graphics card issues. . My fav os of all time is Mac 0s 9 because? I loved the old application on that system.

I? don't see how efficiency is compromised by the Lcars design and I don't agreee that hundreds oif icons on a desktop is particularly efficient anyway. Lcars buttons are coloured according to function, arranged in a logical manner and ideal for touch sensitive screens too. Designed properly an Lcars based interface is every bit as efficient as a standard Windows desktop. Each to their own I guess.

Its illogical to you becuase you are used to icon based interfaces. For older people though icons are an alien concept and makes computers hard to use. A Grandmother understands what a button marked "Access Internet" does. She won't understand what a blue "e" means until? she knows its an incon for internet explorer. Text based interfaces with simplified screens that change depending upon what is being accessed or used are far more logical in fact.

If you think this is practical, then good for you. I, on the other hand, will never be caught dead using this? piece of shit. I have a brother who uses Linux, and with him I understand he sacrifices a little user-friendliness for immunity to glitches, crashes, exploits, etc. In my opinion, Windows/Linux and Mac operating systems are the most natural and user-friendly way to use our computer technologies. Good luck popularizing LCARS. I think it'll remain esoteric & cultish/nerdly.

Actualy is designed NOT to be too nerdy. There are no flashy graphics for example, no pictures of? starships or other show related images whatsoever. Its a practicle application of the Lcars style of interface applied to the day to day operations of a PC, as best as it can be anyway. Obviously its based on star trek though so it has a couple of little toys such as the red alert and self destruct.

it worked right from the start. it always stops short of the full countdown by about a tenth of a second or so. works ok on vista other than the occasional crash. hogs the cpu as you can see? in the video. still fun to screw around with though.
