I pass the man made mountain everytime I go into to town as I live past it about 25 mins and heard about this happening, and kinda didnt believe it but you are so lucky to have friends with you and that is the way we all should do is travel with friends and let people know where and when we plan on returning so that if we dont call or show up to say we r good people will send help. Its not Avalanche "Country" maybe, but you were riding Avalanche "Terrain" this is trerrain steeper then 25 Degrees regardless if its Ontario, or BC it all depends on the slope the snow rests on. So if you dont want to carry a beacon or probe you have 2 choices: 1 - Ignorantly risk your life every time you choose to climb a hill like that, or 2 - stay off the steep slopes and stick to riding your "not Avalanche? Country" Terrain

I'm a professional ski patroller trained in avalanche rescue that resides in BC, but grew up in Sudbury, snowmobiling and ice fishing like all the other kids. I get it they weren't expecting this, I would'nt have back in the day. The OFSC should use this to educate people. There should be a small amount of basic avalanche assessment and rescue in order to get? a snowmobile license. Makes sense. Most governing bodies follow a re-active risk management policy.

The problem is no where in ontario do we have this kind of terrain, so no one carries the equipment for it (beacons and probes).? Ive grown up riding sleds in ontario my whole life, so when i get to a new spot, I do not automatically think of that area being a potential avalanche hazzard because I have NEVER thought of it before. Its like going to the desert wearing a life jacket, "just in case you might drown." See what I mean?

In freshwater wood decays very slowly especially if it is in deep water, cold, and with no current. A ship I found a number of years ago with blackwalnut lumber had only deteriorated 1/8th of an inch in 122 years and that ship was not in very deep? water. The Ontario is way too deep for? any scavengers to salvage. The UK Ministry of Defence was notified and they consider HMS Ontario a war grave and do not want to raise or salvage any items from the ship. For more of the story of that period of the American Revolution and lots of pics of the Ontario read the book Legend of the Lake (Discovey Edition) available from the Shipwreckworld website. I can add a personal inscription in the book if desired. Jim

Back in 2010, I purchased a book? by Loren Coleman and Mark Hall called "True Giants" which documents sightings of creatures over 9 feet high, and some even 12, 15, and 20 feet which left footprints 20 to 36 inches long.
