Notice how Hamlet aggressively talks to his own? reflection as if chastising himself for not taking action. Branagh's directorial choice to include Claudius in this scene, right behind the mirror, emphasizes the fact that Hamlet himself (his reflection) is the ONLY thing that's in the way of carrying out his revenge. This scene brilliantly captures Hamlet's inner struggle with himself. That's what I think at least.

I agree with those in favor or Mr Branagh's pace and rhythm. I think this is brilliant. The urgency is much appreciated over those actors that want to relish in the prose. During this bit of the live performance, we all think, "oh god here comes that line, here comes this soliloquy. How is the actor going to do it this time?" It gets tiresome ha. But Branagh does this Zen version? But, what do i know? I am usually talking out me arse? ha

YES I agree. Hamlet is? maturing in age, but in heart and mind he is still struggling. He is both a child and an adult, a little prince perhaps, not ready to be a king. His heart has an idea of what it wants, but no idea of how to keep or even attain it. He is immature but in a very sweet, pitiful way - I think he finally grows up just before he dies.

He is mature beyond his years, and you cannot find this kind of maturity in the experience of any teenager in today's society. How old do? you think Hamlet needs to be? I've always pictured Hamlet as a younger character. If you take the themes of inactivity and the oppression of the 1st generation to the 2nd generation that are so prevalent in the story of Hamlet, it really works better for Hamlet to be a younger character. Speaking of inactivity, it's interesting that he's walking around in the 'ACTION' section of the video store...it seems like a cultural statement for the 21st century.

Exactly.? I agree with you when you say there was never any intention to confuse or misinform. However, I don't think the purpose of the work was intended to be so malleable as you seem to believe. Beckett, of all playwrights, was very particular in how his works were to be preformed. That could only suggest that, to him, the "meaning" of the work was very specific too.

He? wrote it so you would think. So you would create your own story and interpretation. This, to me, is the magic of absurdism. Aside from his line readings, his "acting" so to speak, what I find astonishing is his realization of the soliloquy as a piece of film. He probably would have played it quite differently in a stage performance. Here? the camera [that is, the viewer] climbs to the highest turret in the castle, sees the waves crashing below, thinks of jumping, and enters Hamlet's brain from behind. Also very strong use of the knife. A movie must show us, not merely tell us. Olivier accomplishes this quite daringly.

I just received The RSC's version with Tennant but haven't had a chance to watch it? yet. The soliloquy is a small part and I'm holding off on judging until I can watch the whole play. They both give different interpretations to the speech. David Tennant's is more about suicide. I subscribe to? this interpretation. Gee, I have to wonder? if the fellow driving the Ford woulda cared if, when he did that massive tug and sucessfully pulled the front driveline on the jeep 90 degrees, if he wrenched the kids arm off that was in the jeep cause the steering wheel woulda jerked through the firewall or spun with his arm in it? Instead of pulling at full throttle in the Ford, try quarter throttle or even less from closer behind the jeep, instead of 1/4 mile of tow strap....Probably woulda popped it right out.
