The soldiers took the match out and put it at a safe place: it could be their hat or a metal cylinder hanging from their belt.The match burned too quick anyway to stay in the cock. From own experience with matchlocks I can say that the forkrest -which most musketeers had- was not necessary because of the weight of a musket, but because you needed one hand to squeeze the match into the? cock or serpentine and the other to tighten the srew which holds it. yeah they were becuase? when the matchlock first game into the army they had to have a kind of fork to stick in the ground the you'd rest the musket on the fork. With the flintlock it's light so you just rest in in your shoulder.

Just wondering, here the guys says the musket ball is in the top of the cartridge, which you bite off and hold? in your mouth, then 'spit down' the musket ball. I always believed the ball was in the bottom of the cartridge, once you had bitten off the top you held the cartridge by the base to prevent the ball coming out while you primed the pan and poured the powder down the ball. Then you let the ball slip from the cartridge down the ball, followed by the paper. What is the correct way?

After firing the gun more than 5-10 times using "LIVE" ammunition, the fouling becomes excessive enough that you cannot force a mini down the barrel without giving the air someplace to go. The whole cap on the nipple BS is a MYTH!!!... Do you plug the vent on a flintlock before reloading??? NO.... Just because you are a reenactor doesn't mean anything. Reenactors have to cater to the lowest? common denominator.

80grains of Bp is perfect for the mini's I was using. The standard civil war load was 65gr because of the original mini's skirt. You really think 80grs will blow the gun???... When using? a maxi ball the standard load should be 120grains of 2f. The Original load for the thin barreled smooth bore Brown Bess was 150gr of black powder. Try reading a little more than just Hardees manual.

I have been a competitive shooter for several years 2 gun 3 gun and have dabbled in black powder? historic weapons. I own a 3 band Springfield 61 , and as an advocate of safety I am truely suprised you didnt shoot your fingers off after you took of the primer and loaded again. Wheres your wading IE paper cartridge . I have reenacted for 10 years also as a 1st Sgt in an infatry unit old top over here would have dusted you off for loading at the full cock. I have no trouble with my 1861 by armisport with half cock and putting on the cap. I use the 55grains in a cartridge with the minie and i"ll do it 3 shots a minuate. Use period accoutrements and? the real loading drill and you will find it goes a lot easier and quicker.

Actually, The Union army used round balls as well, I know so because I have relic hunted many union camps and found quite a few. The "ribs" you refer to are called? rings and the bullet with two rings is a Confederate style Gardner bullet while the 3 ringed bullet was the most common style of .58 caliber ammunition used in the war by both sides.

This is a hand made .75 caliber smoothbore Matchlock Musket shown from start to the first firing, taking one month to make. The Barrel is a 1710 Dutch Flintlock barrel by Colerain and was purchased from Track of the Wolf.

I don't like to cut my matches, they last longer that way and this .75 cal doesn't have a clamp in it's serpentine like my? 25mm Matchlock so it's hard to use a short match with this one. It's easier to just draw the rest of the match up in your forehand.

I think that the "barn door" part of the experiment is executed wrong a barn door would not have hollow spots inside of it. I have been? shooting my Pedersoli Brown Bess since 1993. That musket is every bit as reliable as any modern arm I own. Pedersoli quality is fantastic. I have been tempted ,in the past to buy one of these India muskets, but like the video said, the quality is questionable. I have spoken with numerous people that said the same thing Mr.Murphy said about having to buy several to get one good gun. False economy, IMO. MiF

I bought a .22WMR Marlin which cost about $160. It? is on the low end but is made well. It may not be WWII reliable (maybe?) but it seems well made and is worth it's low price. Some types of guns sell for less and some for more. If the gun operates at high pressures, normally it will cost more--because its steel must be stronger. For example a .22lr rifle may cost US $200 whereas a .308 rifle may cost $750

Every gun person knows not to buy cheap guns. I'm not talking about price--I'm talking about quality. A 'pot metal' gun is not a gun--it's a grenade & it's going to blow your hands off :O US $650-700 is not inexpensive. It's about normal price for the careful shopper. For example my Ruger GSR was $750 before tax. My Smith & Wesson .357 was about $600 total. I'd say $300 is low, 750 is median, & 1200 is high. To spend $1200 on a nice gun is not? surprising. Perfect reliability is priceless

don't be in? a hurry...save up...... buying quality.. you can pay a few dollars to much....but make a bad purchase on cheaply made junk ...you can lose all the money that you outlay-ed .... i did this on my first black powder rifle..a euro arms rifled musket .........Indian made guns couldn't be much worse than EUROARMS S#**@T. lol........another option is buy an original and get a barrel liner or barrel made from custom barrel maker bobby Hoyt ,or Whitaker's.

Try the middlesex villiage ones. I reenact and mine has never failed me in several years of rugged use. Being part of light infantry in reenactments we shoot the? most rounds up to 6 rounds a minute and we burn powder. So middlesex villiage trading is the place to go!

I bought an India musket from Middlesex Trading Co. It cost me $700. 3 years later, I hate it. The teak wood sucks, the lock doesn't function 100% of the time, its bulky and its just ugly. I'm going to replace it with a pedersoli musket. I should've just been patient and saved up and bought a pedersoli to begin with because it would only cost me $1200 as compared to spending $700 first and then? being stuck with a piece of junk and then ultimately spending $1200 anyways.

If you are a reenactor then you shouldn't buy an India gun based on the fact that the India guns are far from being authentic reproductions of the originals. The biggest problem is the wood. A 1795 model Springfield musket had an American walnut stock. These India muskets use teak wood and/or rosewood which, in my opinion, is crap wood. If you think an India-made musket is authentic then you might as well use a? plastic stock musket. If you don't care about authenticity then buy what you want

I have owend both and as for a good beater weapon for reenactment and shoothing the India musket i give two thumbs up I compared it to my original and it was very close. The pedersoli I have is very good too comes with the vent hole drilled and fizzen caseharden. I? had to do this for my India but compared to cost use and resale value I vote Indian. not to say they have had some problems and bad rep. But that is my thoughts ps good video

I doubt you have sampled anywhere near the amount of India guns I have. I am not dogging any one of these company's, I buy from all of them, I enjoy all? of them. The problem is you cant ever get away from the fact that they are India made. There is no quality control. These importers do the best they can to sort through them but its still a crap shoot. Again this video wasn't to bash anyone, just to inform.

I've owned weapons from Loyalist and Pedersoli. The Pedersoli was? superb. No question about it. The one from Loyalist was a good, working piece I wasn't afraid to ding or beat around. I've heard really good things about MVTCO. Always know who you're dealing with & get references. There are some really crappy India made guns and there are some decent ones out there, especially for the money. My only issue with the India made guns I've seen is that all of them need refinishing.

This is an evaluation of MVTCO, LOYALIST ARMS, VETERAN ARMS, DISCRM. GEN, and FLINTLOCK REPAIRS. Yes they all do there little things to the musket.....BUT no matter what you do. they are all India guns and can ALL have "potential" problems. I have muskets from every one of these suppliers and I? have myself bought strait from India. I have also repaired/improved possibly hundreds of reenactors India made guns.

REALLY did not like this vid. Did not specify from which single company Murphey got his musket . There? are four companies offering these, and they are from parts from different companies in India. Cannot simply sample one company, and evaluate "India muskets". They're not all the same. Loyalist Arms muskets come ready to shoot right out of the box. True, replacement parts are tough for all of them, but they don't break very often.

Not a great idea if the idea is to take a building then rush back outside, or stay in the building to fire at other enemies. 2 more advantages I can think of. 1 - Effort. Drawing back a high powered crossbow in a hurry is hard work even with a windlass or mechanical aid. Firearms are more complicated but less tiring. Makes it easier to maintain rate of fire. 2 - Shields. Bullets go through cover more easily. Some crossbowmen would carry a pavise as portable cover, which would stop an arrow or a crossbow bolt but might not work so well against a musket ball. Those? are my guesses. I hope that helps!

You should also consider this point - great lengths were taken to ensure that someone was always loaded. In the line, battalions would fire by alternating platoons, or ranks, or by file. the range of the musket? is far longer according to its slope compared to a crossbow. Also balls are cheaper to produce then bolts. Also a well trained gunner could fire off 3 rounds per minute which is much faster then how some one could crank back a crossbow and then sloping it to compensate. Crossbows without a crank also require a lot of strength where as a musket can be used by anyone with hands

Hey i study psychology and genetics alot. The answer boils down to a lack of courage. Its far easier to reload and pull a trigger to kill a man than it is to drive your blade through his torso. You'll say to yourself "well he missed me once, so he might miss again". You'll convince yourself of anything so you wont have to use? your blade. Its so easy to just press a trigger. I had a flintlock with the exact same problem. I repaired by? taking the lock apart and correcting the warped plate in a vise. No heat was required, simply bent it straight. Re-assembled the lock and it works great.

I have a nice Indian 2nd model Brown Bess from the 70's, it's too bad the quality has dropped as much as it? did. I do have a nice modern Indian matchlock, all I had to do was bore the flash hole. One thing I found out was that I really had to get an acetelyne torch, the propane torch didn't get hot enough for real metal work, and I heard that MAPP gas has too much hydrogen to work with raw steel and iron.

I hate how many People get Indian Guns and boast about, that they actually are much? more authentic than any other Copy. Which is plain wrong. Back in the days they had suprisingly high Standards and Qualities of Arms, and close Tolerynces, and any Pile of modern India-Guns would not pass any Inspectors check at all. And it requires quite a lot of Work to get them to work. And with the Bore Tolerances, well, I tought they were bad, but .69 to .78 is horrible.
