What is minimal? It's all relative. Bread and a slice of ham is pretty minimal, but create? the bread from raw ingredients. Butcher the pig. Not so minimal. For a car commercial, this is pretty basic. Black and white. Ink and paper. A sketch. Simple. The process to get there maybe not so much. Don't be pretentious nards.

Honestly I really don't think the video itself is minimalism. I agree the idea of a pen and a large marker on white is minimalist. But the video itself is loud, fast, the point of view changing rapidly, swerving and swirling around the dueling writing utensils, who are writing furiously, making loud engine noises. None of that seems like minimalism to me. The video is? of minimalistic ideas, the but the video itself isn't minimalism.

I use the photos to do a type of mental timetravel, as I did not live during those years. But really I watch TV (just don't own one), mostly whatever happens to be on at the moment, especially? TV used at brother's apt. & Mom nursing home. Cell phone is some kind of anchor = never owned one. Try writing a letter and send your recent photo. I use "one use cameras".? I haven't written anything on the topic but many others have. I've found minimalism gets easier with practice, introspection & patience. Items I couldn't get rid of a year ago are now gone. It's exhilarating each time I part with something.? If I haven't used something within a year then I sell it or give it away. I own so few possessions now. Next on my list is digital clutter.

I totally understand only keeping what you need, but from what I came across on the minimalist blogs it seemed to be a sort of competition to see who can live with the least amount of material items just to say they own less than 100 items. I own less than 100 items, and it isn't really extreme at all. I don't bother counting what I have, I just keep what I need. It is a lot less than you would think. The purpose of minimalism isn't to own less stuff, it is to give me time to do what I want. I don't have to worry about washing my car(it's really old), dry cleaning, cleaning? furniture, or many of the other "hassles" people consider a part of daily life.

Agreed. Ours is a 36 footer, so slips are a bit more reasonable. The west coast has been hit much harder by the economy, I think. It's not uncommon to find fees here at around $8 a foot. You seem to be in the know regarding getting work done out of the? country. Good idea. We're currently outfitting for a southern Pacific voyage. Will sail south to American Samoa and on. Although I do all the work myself, installing, climbing the mast, building, it can be costly to prepare for that.

Ongoing costs depend on what type of boat you buy and how much work you're willing / able to do yourself, of course. Candide has an overall length of 50ft, which means that slips usually cost more. ? I just had one heck of a shock last year when I started pricing new teak decks...two estimates at $45K!!! I plan to sail to Costa Rica next year where labor / teak is MUCH cheaper! I'm glad I live in a mobile home! ;-)

We're going on three and our breakdown is MUCH cheaper. ? We're at $324 a month for the slip, $432 a year for insurance, haul out about every two years and do ALL our own maintenance. Compared to a mortgage, we're living cheaper than we have in many years. We own our own business (wife is attorney and I manage the office). After getting rid of the home and furnishings, and moving aboard, we're out around $500/month including saving for haul out. Compared to well over $3000/month it's cheap.

I've been living aboard for 15 years, and it most definitely isn't a "really cheap" lifestyle. At my current marina in Charleston, the slip fees are $785 per month. I pay about $1,600 annually for insurance, and the boat has to be hauled? out of the water every 18 months or so for new bottom paint (another $1,500 or so). Annual maintenance probably runs $2,500.

Rich people who can afford yatchs aren't likely to become minimalists because money isn't a stress factor for them. They can buy large places to store all their stuff. But most people aren't rich so minimalism? makes sense to them. That said, you could be rich and still be a different version of a minimalist. For example, if all you have are things you really use, even if it's 5 sports cars, then so be it. I don't think minimalism is just about having only what you need, it's about making use of.

I'll be completely honest and say I first got into his music when I was really stoned. All of those frequencies and the dissonance were utterly incredible elements to the music. It was frightening and very romantic.? A lot of people forget that minimalism doesn't mean that there isn't a lot going on. It is the methodology of saying the most with the least. Being economic is something Young had mastery of.

Lamonte Young is so interesting. He had to have a lot of courage to face what he did as a student at UC Berkeley. He is an example that artists should stick to their beliefs and pursue them while remaining open-minded and humble enough to accept the influence of others and new ideas. In that sense, he really an example for everyone. Many people allow their values to be corrupted through the desire to be part of a group. Young shows its not necessary to be in a? group to be a part of things.

what the hell is behind his whole need to withold the "gift" he as an artist has bestowed. he's made such a real effort to prevent people from being "lifted up", not allowing access to his music, basically. having not shelled out whatever fortune was necessary to purchase a copy of the well tuned piano back in the? early/mid 80s the first of anything I've ever heard is this pirated stuff on youtube! certainly didn't realize he was some kinda leatherman.

While creating media to help stimulate GCSE composition, I wondered about combining Steve Reich style minimalism with its visual antithesis, abstract expressionism. I don't know whether others agree, but I always thought Jackson Pollock's drip technique suited minimalism. Mind you, I'm a drummer, so what do I know about music?

I wonder why you are not interested in knowing what is particularly amazing about it. Why is the adjective stupid interesting for you to dig deeper and amazing is not? I welcome your response, however clarification would help. What is particularly stupid about it? I ask because, as a teacher, this would be a question I would ask my students, and this piece was created as an example of work that young people could do themselves. Of course if you simply hate it as it isn't to your taste that's fine. I am not holding it up as a? work of creative genius. On the contrary, my original comments say that it took me about an hour to create!

Right, I'm sorry. This piece is good, but in my opinion minimalism is easy. It's just adding one instrument on top of another. Who composed a serialism/expressionism piece? I did and the amount of work going into it? is ridiculous, with all the note rows, hexachords, chromaticism. It is a much more challenging task.
