Sorry I don't really understand this idea of objective merit. Do you mean to state an individual's personality traits or abilities? Individual talent is not what I mean. The? problem I had with mikefavre35 is that he seems to suggest that individualistic goals (with or without talents) should be ignored if it conflicts with his vision (and individual vision which he doesn't define) because he apparently knows best. I'm not saying the U.S. was socialist, but within the field of economics at the? time, it was believed socialism was the best way to go. Friedman was rather radical for the time in his criticism of socialism and Keynesianism. Certain of his ideas were unrealistic, but in comparison to the socialists and Keynesians, he was very much a realist. i dunno where u get your info on welfare. where i live in canada, in my province, a single person gets a lousy $610 month for welfare, and often has to rely on food cupboards, and has to choose between paying the heat bill or groceries quite often. mean time, he/she can work for min. wage at $10/hr. which = more than double welfare if they work full? time.

Can you elaborate? I consider myself a libertarian without embracing anarchy. I also do not consider myself a statist, although I am not sure what extreme your definition of statism goes to. I do think government should see to the fostering of basic economic growth? (roads, bridges, etc) and the defense of the people from both outside and inside threats of force (military and police), and some immediate emergency event relief (fire, etc). I feel most of that should be done at state vs fed level.

I spoke of a misrepresentation because he told us that the view that the employer and the employee both had to pay, let's say half of social security taxes was false, because it did not matter for the employer at all (since it is part of his wage cost anyway). There is a misrepresentation in? Friedman's reasoning here, i.e. that the worker's value can only be measured in terms of the sum of his costs for the employer. Now, I am not saying that he is wrong about the general principle he defends here, but I think it is important to realize that a worker is not merely a sum of costs. Taxation only becomes? theft when the rightful property of one American is taken, then given to another American who did not earn it. Taxes collected for that used by all America for the common interest of all (police, military, courts, roadways) are not theft. I guess that makes your social contract theft, but not taxes per se.

It is correct that Alan Greenspan believed in deregulated free markets. However, free market was not the cause of the the finacial meltdown. It was once again governement interferance. The government subsidized real? estate loans in the market which lowered the risk which caused an artificial market to be created. The rising prices encouraged more malinvestment, along with the bailouts. I dont totally agree with milton friedman but he was right about governement interference in this case

Not at all, if you sell shares of a bankrupt company, many times they are worthless. The? bond holders are usually first in line (they have the most protection), and they get a "hair cut," or a large cut in principal, or even a complete default. As far as the government/taxpayers can bail you out though, you do have a point.

So if a company makes lots of money.? At some point that company fails (definitely true). But the person and people behind that company do not (they cange industries shares, withdraw into resources eg. gold until something better comes up). They are the ones who can change industry and that is where real monopoly lies not in one industry but in the whole monetary system keeping the same people in control of the market a little bit of technological innovation shakes it up (google, facebook).

A bill can say "Hurricane Katrina Relief" and if you Look at that? as just one 'little' example...it is a general rollback of various environmental laws...the list is Endless on what they shoved into that "bill". Sorry sir but this is nonsense. I ( living in Britain ) am experiencing that the big four ( Tesco , Asda? etc... ) are abusing their status to raise prices rather than lower them . Only through the appearance of European big hitters such as Aldi and LIDL have I as a consumer been able to experience some form of free market which never the less remains limited as I can only effectively choose between two competing oligolopolies rather than from a variety of choices.

This inequality that you perceive - i.e. your subjective interpretation of the current reality - is an inherent feature of western legal systems. e wealth in the economy.? Prosperity and wealth is the main goal of the capitalist economy but in my opinion you need to allocate resources thru taxes to some extent. The thing is, 'reallocating' resources from the market sounds like taking them from some abstract system. It has to be remembered that the market is composed of people: human beings which are supposedly equal (post-enlightenment). An arbitrary authority (the state) must reallocate from them. What legitimate right does a? government - a group of elites taken as the moral authority - have to assume that level of control? That is the problem of socialism.

I am skeptical of polls, typically. However, EVERY poll shows support for govt, and both parties, at all-time lows. I think these polls are questionable, but more reliable than your personal experience. If you think there is broad support for govt, you must not be talking to a lot of people. I do and? there isn't. For people capable of the kind of rational self interest that allows for individual independence, of course, this is perfect. I have been there, and it's a feeling of incredible freedom, one of the most powerful euphorias. Now, look at PEOPLE. We are not in fact, not all of us (by a? longshot), actually capable of self interested independence. There is another cost, and another loss, when people become too focused on rational independence. Yea, I actually started? from the other end. I started watching Milton Friedman when I stumbled upon his documentary: Free to Choose. He's basically shaped all of my political views. Naomi Klein is a fool, and though I've never read her book, her premise is completely ignorant of the facts, and ignorant of the man she's demonizing. Milton Friedman is a genius.
