I saw a touring company perform Cats in Birmingham, AL in 1988 or so. I didn't really care for the show that much for most of it; Eliot's poems just didn't make particularly good songs. BUT? then there's this song - WOW!! What an absolutely wonderful song!! And Elaine Paige nails it. Just terrific!

Not quite as good as Betty Buckley, but close. At the point where the song reaches "Touch? me" Betty has the advantage. Otherwise both versions are equally exquisite.

Traditionally in my life I have been horrible at taking tests, studying and reading but after 6+ years of? night classes and proper nutrition I feel I have made some recognizable improvements in my congnitive ability to read faster, retain more and perform better on tests. just my experience anyway.

I believe everything you sense and experience is recorded in the memory bank. Some memories are less valuable so they are placed subordinately. But I don't see a cat in Elaine's performance. I? see an old beggar lady limping about. I see a glamorous cat in Betty's performance. Someone who's been emotionally drained, yet still holds some dignity. Watch as she almost turns away in shame during "it's so easy to leave me!". I like Betty's version, but? I doesn't make me cry like Elaine's. I love how feminine and delicately Betty sings it, even though she is sad and old, she still tries to appear glamourous and elegant. That said, I don't think webber wanted memory to be that kind of song. To me is a song of desperation, a cry for help. I can't agree with? AtLastOnTheGround. This song is about solitude, about someone who's not accepted by rest cats. And for me - Betty perfect PLAY Grizabella, but Elaine IS Grizabella. I can't hear in Betty's voice ANY emotion. It's just perfect SUNG a song. Like Barbara Straisand's version. In Elaine Paige one word from this song is much more emotion than in hole song Betty and Barbara altogether.

@MadamPiki Grizabella was trying to make it through anthor day? of being bullied and old and was gonna give up and die, (notice how she sang about depressing things to) then Jemima sang about happy stuff and showed Griz that not everyone hated her and wanted her to die and that gave her the strength to go on.
