thats perspective and no thats not what i asked, i asked if something was traveling at the speed of light wouldn't it be instantaneous rather than progressive (ie one long shaft of lightning, not a shaft reaching for the ground or clouds). i now have discovered that lightning is bound by? parameters such as humidity, conductive elements and as such it travels nowhere near the speed of light but rather different speeds through different environs.

that didnt explain anything? are you trying to tell me that that camera takes 2997924580000 images per second? (number quoted is speed of light in millimeters) because not only would the harddrive be full in a flash of a second there isnt a single processor that could? process that many images in existence. so for the sake of convention we'll assume the speed of light is instant on earth. my understanding of lightning was it moved at the speed of light i didnt know it worms it way up or down.

They can writhe around a bit if they encounter stronger winds, but they will still move in the same general direction, since they are part of the storm's updraft. If you think it's boring, too bad. The tornado isn't the storm itself, it is a part of the main storm's (supercell thunderstorm) updraft. And it is the other way around, thunderstorms trigger tornadoes. The thunderstorm updraft is what pushes up a horizontal vortex of air into a vertical mesocyclone. If you watch any storm chasin footage you will see chasers following a thunderstorm and waiting for a tornado to form from it. Even this video? says the storms produce tornadoes. No, the point I was trying to make is that Radiohead (among others) are better experimentally AND composition-wise, listening to songs like "Videotape" or "Codex" I doubt Oasis has ever created anything as beautiful, and Oasis doesn't have the same transporting and psychological power to their music IMO, I like that Radiohead are great songwriters AND innovators.? The closer the lightning is to the thunder, the closer you are to being hit. When you see lighting, start counting in seconds till you hear the thunder.. 1 sec = +- 1000 meters away etc..?

We had a rash of lightning strikes to vehicles a few years ago at the dealership where I work. One was hit on the parking lot outside. The IPC(instr.panel),Radio, SDM(air bag module),MAF? (Mass airflow sensor), BCM(Body Computer),PCM(powertrain computer)and the alternator were damaged. Strange thing was nothing was visibly killed just electrically. Needless to say I DO NOT park on that particular area anymore.

Very small clarification on your excellent explanation: Lightning isn't light. It's the result of the surrounding gas medium heating to a point that electrons are stripped from it's atoms, creating a charged ionized gas, much like excited neon. That's why you get the 'multi-pulse' effect seen in the video, the ionized? gas creates a kind of conduit multiple charges can follow to ground. Same effect is why any electrical arc will create ozone: heat 3x the sun causes regular O2 to fuse to O3, ozone
