I'm an orthadox jew and I observe shabbat, and you are allowed to hold cards. The only reason I could think of is that if the tournament was outside in public there is an issue with carrying things in public on the sabbath (but holding isn't really carrying) .Our laws sound a bit silly, but you have to experience it first hand. I'm orthodox and unless the card game had anything to do with the things you listed as not allowed to do on Shabbat* (:P), I think it's a really strict stringency. I may have heard? of it once. Also, saving a life overrides any rule ever, except for idolatry, murder, and forbidden sexual relations. Also, the punishment of death is conditional (not going to get into that now), but at least today I'm not going to be judged so harshly.
