I have been struggling with my short irons for a couple years actually and was losing several? frustrating strokes a round because of it but your video lesson has restored my confidence. It can. One of many factors that can cause a slice is poor posture. You might be standing too close to the ball which makes it hard for your chest to rotate and? the club have plenty of room to swing out to the ball. This would cause you to cut across the ball (or swing out to in as it is called) and slice. But people like Jim Furyk are perfectly comfortable standing close to the ball, but they make compensations later in the swing to "catch up" Hence his weird looking swing.

Here's a thought... everyones wrong! There are numerous things? you can do to slice/fade a golf ball. For instance, even if your club face is closed and you have good position at the top of your swing, if you initiate the down swing with your upper body you can cut across the ball creating a slice. The video points out one way to fix slice, it doesnt claim to fix everything.

@Threadonaspool Sorry, you are wrong. The top? of your backswing has nothing whatsoever to do with impact. (Unless, however you play "dead-handed"). You can have a severely closed clubface at the top of the backswing, yet still hit shanks & slices. People are looking in the wrong places for good golf. Yourself included. ;)

If that is the case, then the wrist cock of the hitter is through left wrist bowing (flexion), rather than radial deviation plus pronation? I can see how this works, keeps the right palm normal to the downswing plane, but I don't think most could get more that 70-80 degrees of lag.

Slicers forget this. The guys a good teacher no doubt, but sometimes good teachers can still teach the wrong approaches when fixing problems. If youre slicing the ball and you already have a good solid grip, youre either not loose enough over the ball or you are out of position at the? top of your backswing. Probably the later!!

This guy is correct. The golf swing is not called? a "swing" for nothing. It should never be thought of as HITTING. The relatively slow movement of an arm activates a bull whip and by the time that energy reaches the tip the sound barrier has broken - SNAP! By the time your hands reach the bottom, the club-heads is releasing and moving much faster than your hands, think about it. THIS WHY THE PROS OFTEN LOOK SO EFFORTLESS. This demonstration is the key to club-head speed. Practice = Accuracy.

Thanks Jeff! I shot my best round so far at my course (78) but it could of easily been 73 or 74. I had a few 3 putts and some? bad 2 putts. This routine looks like it offers confidence for any putt on any green, and I will definately give it a go! Cheers!

@cobracrane The feeling I get is that I'm hitting it off the toe. Most people who shank shots, usually come over the top slighly at the top of the backswing/beginning of downswing (the transition). If you? get the feeling that you want to impact the ball with the toe of the club, it usually corrects the over the top movement. At the beginning of the downswing, try to get the feeling that you are going to hit it with the toe of the club. It works for me. No more shanking.

I used to shank the ball a lot during games. I was? watching a golf video, and a pro said he always feels like he is hitting the ball with the toe of the club. I went out the next day and tried to get the feeling of hitting the ball with the toe of the club, and I've never shanked it since. THE MOST TERRIFYING SHOT IN GOLF IS THE ONE DIRECTLY AFTER A SHANK SHOT.

Drills put 2 feet together and it makes u turn your shoulders try it on range changed to interlock grip (small hands). make sure your shoulders point square at target I was amazed I was aiming left of target causing out to in and heel of club (shank) hitting ball, feels weird at first right shoulder below left as well makes u more strike back of ball more control it`s great straight long drives and positive mental play. @abracadaver006 Also, how exaggerated is this tilt supposed to be? In another video? you talk about your cheek being behind the ball, while your sternum is ahead of it. I find it easier to toss my hands back from a slightly less tilted position, causing my left heel to lift (plant it at the top before my downswing). If I keep a spine tilt through the down swing, but try to brace against my left leg to keep weight forward, am I achieving the right motion w/o setting an exaggerated tilt at address?

Shawn, I have been watching a lot of your wonderful clips. They have helped me immensely. The watchdog segments have been great, after going through half a dozen Golf Digest my friend had? at his cottage, I felt as if the instructional information contradicted itself so much. I've been working on trying to get into this braced position, but I find when I do get into what I believe is the position, the takeaway (like perpetual motion drill) is very difficult for me to perform naturally. On a more serious note...It seems as if the ball is back in your stance. And that doesn't appear to be a wedge. Is it just a camera angle or am I right? I watched another video or three where you put the iron in the? middle of your stance and the ball in front of that. Can you please sort this out for me? Thank you.

@ZeroSumJ1 Definitely a couple of short circuits going on here; you don't want to be thinking of the legs but simply focusing on the weight of the arm-club? unit releasing towards the target; see "hammer through; shawn clement" as well as my latest "farm hammer" video; then see my "how to focus" part 1 and 2 to make sure you are not focused on "not hitting the ground" as this would make you dig big time; you must be focused on target release or pay! See "baseball mental game for golf" too;

I tried this. and my club went straight into the ground 2 feet behind the ball and resurfaced about a foot in front of the ball. digging a 6 inch deep canyon in the process... tried it a few times more with similar results. might be getting too much leg action? but having a hard time figuring out how? and when to bend the knees. using momentum 100% to let the club move, but the whole catapult concept just makes my club rocket into the dirt.

umm yeah again another great tip. people what you must remember is neutons law, every action has an equal and opposite reaction. so how is this use full? by using your legs like Shawn demonstrates what? you are actually doing is exerting force into the ground, and this force is being re-distributed from the ground into your body giving you more, and effortless power if done right. but if done wrong the power is exerted at the wrong time ressulting in poor results. age 17, 3.9 factor.

Thanks for the help. Just this weekend the Ladies had a ball roll into a divot, quater or half inch of sand and they were making a big deal out of it. It seems like? it would be less resistance but since the ball is long gone before the club hits the ground, it just didn't seem to make that much of a difference. wrfisherman

This is why doing the perpetual motion drill is so important and to see the arc blur appear in front of you as you do it; many try too hard and overdo the toss with too much manipulation and lift from the arms...the arms get lifted; not your job to do the placing and lifting...I am so very happy for you that you were able to see and feel the difference; now? you get to evolve! Hey there mister, have some GREAT news. I been struggling with the toss in the back swing and just realized I was tossing it on the wrong axis. I noticed how you toss the club close to your body down the target line axis? and so decided to try it. All I can say is I had a SUPER time at the range today. I was compressing the balls so nice with great results that I just stood there and laughed. All this time I kept tossing the club to the outside of my target line and was getting pulls and slices.

With your analogy of the child's swing, it appears you're letting your head bob up and down via flex in your knees, I fight topping the ball particularly on long irons and fairway woods. Won't that? move make my problem worse? Also, Does it ever make sense to visualize the ball forward of it actual position in the set up to assure a downward strike, handle in front of the ball etc? Shawn, Off the present subject, but something I've wondering about. Hitting the ball to compress it into the ground to have better contact, but all the slow motion pixs on the golf channel show the ball never compresses against the ground, It's off the face and in the air instantly. I hear this from coaches and pros but it just doesn't seem right. just an observation. Thanks for all the help of all these years,? I'm getting others to tune in since my game has improved because of you teachings.
