Great video and something to try today as my game has been on a downward spiral for a? month or so. Every so often I get somewhere at the top which feels very wrong and the strike is only just making contact with the toe of the club. Not sure what I'm doing though?? great video but i do have a problem with lining it up? with the logo since most balls arent balanced and no company that I know of takes the time to find the balls center of gravity or rather "the light side" so that part doesnt really help unless the balls are balanced. But if you do know of a company that takes the time to check that their balls are balanced please let me know. By the way that one thing is the only thing I havent found useful. Every other tip on every video has helped :)

Started swinging golf clubs for the first time about 3 weeks ago. I have a 7 and an 8 iron, and a putter, all for $2 a piece from the thrift store. I practice at a park because I'm too broke to hit the courses, but I'm swinging nice and straight with my irons. Before this video I had no idea how to use my putter? but now I'm glad I bought it. I can't wait to find a suitable spot to call my poor man's practice green

Enjoy the video a lot. I typically drain all of my putts within 6ft. However, in the last? week I seem to have hit a slump. I missed about 4 par putts from inside 4 ft the other day and this has happened to me in several rounds in the last 10 days or so. Do golfers go through a putting slump the same way baseball players go through hitting slumps? I don't want to change my putting stoke but I'm wondering if it's time to make changes or if I should just be patient and ride this out?

Hi Shawn, have you any vids on the wrist hinge from half way back? I saw some vids that say the arms should go straight up after the half way back position but when I try? that I slice the ball, I draw the ball when I hinge my right wrist towards the back of the wall behind me at the range giving me a slightly laid off position, it's as if I'm hitting the back of the wall with my clubface is this wrong?

Hello Shawn...your website is currently down, under construction, so i'm not able to read your forum to find an answer to my question. I've only recently discovered? your existence. Shawn, I? did get your emaill re: videos to watch. I will check them out. This is a very good explanation of the grip. I have two questions though. I have very short fingers and a std. grip size seems to inhibit the roll of the wrist you demonstrate in this video. Is that possible? Or can a sliding of the hips in the downswing (most likley the head also) keep the wrists from rotating and hinging on the downswing properly. Or a combination of both of the above.

Love your? videos, Shawn. I'm curious about your swing. I watched your swing on this video frame by frame and noticed that your upswing is steeper than your downswing. I've seen other pros preaching about one plane swing. From a beginner's point of view (me), I would guess that momentum automatically corrects the path of the club. Would you say then, your swing is more natural?

Hi Shawn. I've been using this drill for a few weeks and it's really helped me hit the ball more solid with a great shape. Thanks. My bad shot? with this move is a pull hook (never happened before) but working on keeping my shoulders back in the downswing solves it...but it's inconsistent. Any advice to help ingrain this ? I find if I focus on the power move I forget the shoulders back (and vice versa). Keep up the great work on all the videos you do. Thanks

Sean I'm a big fan of Moe Norman and his swing, his move was a vertical drop and a horzonital tug.Ive worked on your move, but, I added something you might like..I was leaning down on one of my alignment sticks, when I did the middle bowed out and a light went off..with my right butt cheek on the wall, at the top of my backswing, I pushed my right shoulder straight down to start my downswing and everything you discribed happened naturally...I? see this move Moe Normans magic move....Now I know.

I was one of the orginal cast members of the Big Break,,,this is the best lower body action ever....now I use to do this without understand its purpose...but after taking a golf lesson for a respected instructor, i was taught to turn my right hip towards the ball my game got worse..now I know that person didn't know? the hinge action of the #4 PA and the relationship with the flying wedges....with your piviot action which is a natural move for me, my ballstriking has soared. (putting thats easy)

This is incredible. This shows me all the "secrets" about me using my arms so? much in my swing. I'm 15 years old and I'm a 2 handicap. I've always played off feel and swinging with my arms was natural. I could never make a hip turn because I never had the correct concept, and with this, I am making perfect tempo and not using my arms. no resistance in? this swing. the hips turn more than the shoulders going back. hips are like 60" turned and the shoulders about 30:. I understand his point, that's why every teacher has their own "schtick" - I hate this particular "schtick" - timing it would be impossible. maybe it's just the drill, would like to see him hit some shots before I took his advice. way too much hip turning. hip movement is a result, not a fundamental .the secret is in the dirt, meaning the feet.

For years i`ve been told to " rotate " my? hips, which has only caused me to struggle with standing up during the swing with the right hip moving towards the ball. This instruction has changed my golf swing forever for the better in many ways -- even my balance. I can't believe I discovered this video only now. I used to lose my position? with the right hip and spin out. This removed a lot of confusion I had with how the lower body is supposed to start the downswing and how the head is supposed to stat back. Great analogy of the right hanky wiping the glass, then the left hanky connecting and wiping through. I tell you I hit my drives better, farther and, more importantly, more consistent today than I ever did. Thanks and more power! Ian, Philippines.

Hi shawn, My wife and I went to see the Shell Houston Open the last year it was held at the Woodlands. One the first day of the tournament we sat in some small grand stand that was placed in front of the driving range waiting for Fred Couples(my hero) to come out and practice. In about 30 minutes of practice, Fred? left a range divot of about 8 to 10 inches in length. It seemed at though everytime he placed a ball down in the back of the divot, that he would barely nick the spot under the ball.

Good question! When you are sending the action to a target through the ball, the average launch angle of a 6 iron is 16 degrees; the average loft? of the 6 iron is 30 degrees; the 5 iron and driver have about the same launch...it is the spin rate and club speed that make the difference; Shawn

it? really depends on personal reference. I have been told hitting it like a 7iron and fairway wood, both should work. If you hit it off like an iron, do so if the lie is bad. People who tends to cast would fat on everyshot on a fluffy lie or fairway, if it is the case, hit it like a fairway wood. Bottom line is, try or practice shots on every type of lie, ball forward or middle, early release, late release, up right swing plane vs fat swing plane. Have a professional hv a look and advice.

Thanks for the video. I'm? a beginner that's basically teaching myself through trial and error, and Youtube. I just bought a 21.5 loft RBZ Hybrid, because I only had a 3 wood between my driver and 5 iron. I was really having a hard time hitting with the 3 wood, so I decided to try a hybrid. I can hit my irons straight, but for some reason every time I get the ball in the air with the hybrid it hooks hard left. Any idea why it would do this? I feel like I'm doing everything the same as the irons.

Shawn....I have really enjoyed all of your videos and wanted to let you know so. I've really? learned a lot about my golf game with your help. I'm a 4 handicap and am always looking for anything that can help me lower it even more. This video about hitting with the hybrid is very interesting. I have never heard anyone talk about "skipping" any club into the ball like you described. I'll have to try it the next time I'm on the course. BTW, I love my hybrids!

I think jinoducky probably meant he doesn't have a super good-looking aesthetical swing (Which I don't give a ****) You can see by a mile this guys has good angles, good position, club path... and he creates a lot of speed and power through the ball, that's all you need. Shawn has a great teaching technique and a very good, consistent swing, IMHO. The only thing in Shawn's swing that I cannot see myself doing, is the pre-backswing right knee kick towards the ball. Shawn , is the long iron game going away ? Is it a thing of the past ? I love my iron game. Most of my time at the range is spent on wedges and mid irons. I play at least one round a week leaving the woods in the car and playing with just irons. Most par 4s require you put 2 good long iron shots together to get on? the green. Par 5s take 3 back to back good irons to be on the green. When using your woods you can make up for bad shots ,much harder to do when just using your irons. Thank you.

It would be great if you did a video specifically for just the? 2,3,4 irons possibly. It seems most vids that I find always just tell you to replace these clubs with hybrids which I don't ever plan on doing. Thanks!

. I have a problem with my hips sliding forward towards the target. This is causing a slight block right on most shots. I have no idea what is causing this. Its very much a reaction to something im doing in the swing. Because its not a concious move I am having trouble stopping it. The push started after the hands fall? down the plane lesson. Shawn, Done quite a bit of research using force plates and I must say you are spot on -? the weight moves due to the swinging of the arms and not due to an intentional shifting of the weight. I did find that close to the top of the backswing the weight tended to favor the back foot 80/20 and at impact it favored the front foot 80/20. Thanks for the insight.

Tried copying your swing tonight hit some great shots with lots of distance I always felt my arms got behind me in the backswing, I see you keep your arms out in front while turning the body and when I got my body out of the way it worked really well it felt totally different, should I also feel that the left arm brings the club down while my body gets out of the way to prevent coming over the top? thanks for your? advice you truly are a great teacher.

Hi Shawn, I used to? have a bit problem of losing my spine angle on the downswing but seem to have pretty much gotten rid of it, however from DTL on video my rear end, if there was a vertical line on it at address would still just move slightly off it towards the ball. Hi, Shawn I have a double? jointed thumb on my left hand I am right handed. Today I played golf . I was a mess shanking the ball.not connecting just poor shots. Tips for you. Try to weaken your grip to 2 or 2.5 knuckles. Also if you're a RH golfer have your R index finger and thumb almost off the club. Very weak. Its mainly those finger which close the? face at impact too much. Also go to Hank Haneys website, register for free, and watch his video on curing a hook. Make sure to do that.

A while back I started gripping the left hand as you show and I felt solid and powerful but I had other swing troubles and reverted back suspecting it played a role in my ire. I'm sure now I was wrong and want to thank you for putting be back on this track. The left hand is getting back into that powerful position. Your? vids have been very helpful. I've noticed when doing the perpetual motion drill that my V in? my right hand (I'm right handed) slowly becomes compromised because the muscles along the lifeline/thumb area get fatigued/sore from the left thumb pressing against it when gripping. Couldn't have said it better, Shawn! That those "fixes" are re-active and don't address the bigger issues in the swing. Before I really got big into your methodology (which is? really only explaining what the human body already does), I went for a lesson to straighten out my drive. He had me do a bunch of re-active things to straighten out flight path. While this did straighten it out, I was not even close to swinging to my full potential. It also felt forced.

The reason the towel is used under the left arm is that the the left arm is tied to the side of the? chest to square the clubface. This brings in a more consistent squaring of the clubface and prevents the dreaded chicken wing . Otherwise, you will have to depend on TIMING OR FLIPPING of the hands and arms. This will cause massive inconsistency. The part of your video where you show the swing with your arms tied to your chest shows just how little you know about the golf swing. Read B. Hogan.

I think your taking the 'elbow close' too litterally! Its not ment for the backswing, just the downswing to the impact position. Of course? you wouldn't be able to make a complete backswing whilst keeping your elbow tight, that is right, but if you look at the tour pros almost every one will have their right elbow relatively close to their body during the downswing. Hi Shawn, I can maintain my spine angle, but still get disconcerted when I spy the club head come over my leading shoulder (right shoulder, I'm left-handed). Sometimes even with irons!! I'm swinging past parallel & left of the target line? (right of the target line for right-hander). Watched a slow motion video of myself, & although a lot of eminent golf techers say some elbow bend is ok, my leading elbow (right) appears to be bending too much. Hi Shawn, Great vids/lessons. I've suffered from a bad? lower back for some time, made much worse by an inadvertent taking of the club too far behind, a reverse pivot and a massive heave OTT. At it's worst I drove a ball with a 3 wood, 3 inches actually into the ground, and it was only just visible. Discovered your lesson and wow what a difference. Great as usual.Found out I was doing something wrong. When I was setting up? and creating a spine tilt to the right ( I am right handed) I wasn't allowing my tail bone to go to the left. I was bending instead of shifting that angle, if that makes any sense. It wasn't until I watched another of your videos where you talk about having your head behind the ball and your tail bone in front of the ball that I realized I was failing to do this. Hi Shawn, i write you from germany. My question is: What can i cure the hook or pull-hook.? On a video in slowmotion i can see that i`m coming from the outside with a closed clubface. I never had a slice and although i try to hit a slice or fade with a open clubface and a wide open stance i always hook the ball. Shawn, at set-up I am fine. I know my spine angle is changing during the swing as I can feel myself straighting up somewhat. I am hitting the dreaded hozzle rocket a lot. Hi Shawn, This video has changed my game! I used to be? a caster of the club, hitting the ball from the outside-in, tilting my head forward. Oh, and with zero lag. Your tip of using a back swing like golfers of the 1900 did, (min 8:10) unlocked the power in my swing. Once I started doing that, LAG...magically appeared!! outstanding and very simple instruction. when i'm showing my buddies how to do the short chip, if they're any good at putting, i tell them just pretend they have a putter in their hands and ignore the look of the clubface. "it's just a weird looking putter." hit it the same way. after a few shots, they get the feel for the trajectory and roll and can adjust. there is no effort to help the ball up if? all is done well, and the contact is very reliable and repeatable.

I have struggled with my chips all last season.When watching shawns chipping videos I have noticed even when? he is braced on the left side and that right foot is rolled in he still employs his infamous hogan power move. His right butt check whipes the wall. I tried this in my chipping swing. WOW don't know why but this made a major improvment. Since I? putt lh I have a lh iron for most of my chip shots around the green. For me the 8 iron goes the same distance as a putter with the same sing speed. If you are hitting into an upslope it is important to closes the club face to induce a slight draw roll, this will prevent the ball from checking up. What I have recently learned is that I can putt fairly well right handed if I have a left hand low grip. That made me realize that I can take my RH 8 iron and do the same.

Cleveland has a fantastic club called the "Niblick". It's a club made? for nothing but chipping. It's ultra forgiving, easy to get up in the air et cetera. It won't help you very much from thick rough, however it makes anything from fairway/apron a pushover. Also, wedges with a thick sole tend to get caught in the rough more often than wedges that don't. Hope I helped you out, feel free to ask any questions.

I like using an 8 iron for all of my chipping around? the green. The main reason is that for me an 8 iron requires the same swing speed as my putter. If I am on a really stupid tight lie and I hit it thin it still goes about the same distance as a putt. The only problem is that I putt LH so I now have two 8 irons in the bag. However, when I go romping in the wood I always bring the LH 8 iron in case I am on the wrong side of the tree.

Aswell as the club shawn recommended, I would also use a 2 piece ball (pro V-1) when swinging through the ball bring the club head through and UP towrds the target line. anotherwords don't allow the club head to come around the body UP the target line. accelerateing through is important and be ready for a 6-7 foot spinn back!!!! maybe more hahaha, good? luck.

Putting grip is just zero out the angle (pad and shaft), and reduce the rolling rythum of the clubhead (as of the design of the lining shaft), hence less power, coz of less clubhead travelling. Anyway... all shot must have compression. ZERO? out the Transfer power (Accumulator #3)

Gonna try this training drill great tip on understanding this concept. I do this well 30% of the time. really not fully aware of opening hip turn first. Think I can learn this in? two buckets thanks to you. I think at the top of the back swing if I weight transfer to the inside left first my right hip will turn faster and allow left hip Socket to become the leverage of the shot and my hips should open a fraction of a second faster. Does that sound right to you.

Shawn, once again awesome stuff. I finally figured out (with the help of my pro) that I was spinning out drastically because my hips were driving way to fast while my arms stayed behind. This opened up my shoulders at impact,? huge slices or flippy pull hooks. Although I've watched this video multiple times, it finally clicked. Thinking "fast arms falling" helped me tremendously. Now I can use the arms to create speed and the hips to create leverage at impact. My SS jumped at least 10mph!

Your ideas about arm falling in front while the body turns are very effective. At 3:41 that's a "Moe Normanish" kind of action to me! Btw I think there's another effective procedure for the downswing. The point is that we imagine that the body starts unwinding hard from the top along with the arms. This way the torso has to stop and stall at - or ever before - impact, in order to allow the hands and arm to be released. What if we start the downswing with "pivot stall" +? arm falling?

When i try to "let go" and become target oriented.. it seems to eccentuate my faults.so i really have a hard time giving up? control of my swing.. Also, it is observable in several great players that there is a slight rearward fall of the club and arms. I've just seen too many people who try to apply the "in front of" thing end up like "tammywiseman" (above), getting too steep, outside, and over the top. Also, while it's true that crowding the swing with a too-inside move on the backswing can cause an over-the-top move to compensate, it's also true that players? get OTT by being too rotary and/or torso-and-hip-oriented.

I do object somewhat to the popular "in front" theory of the last 20 years or so. Factually, the arms and club do move across the torso and to the side of it in the backswing, if the reference point is the turned torso; or, if you prefer, the club is definitely behind the head and neck. I've seen amateurs tie themselves in knots trying to keep the club in line with the middle of the "front" of the torso, as if they? were supposed to fight the natural swinging motion of the arms and club.

Hi shawn, I've been watching your videos over and over and I am just starting to feel like things are starting to make sense. It was a video on release that especially made me feel what I was doing wrong and how I needed to swing instead. But it made me? wonder, you say that you don't release the club until after impact, which makes sense, however, with your drivers and fairway woods where the ball is to your left, does that mean that release comes later in your swing versus an iron swing?

Love your videos. Quick question. Your main focus in your other videos is in releasing energy and club out to the target and not worrying about the ball ot swatting at the ball directly. ? In this video you refer to the focus being on the skimming the ground. Hi Shawn, I have the tendency to hit a strong fade, which looks like a weak slice, if that makes sense. The ball starts going in the middle than strays to the right. Not all the time though, but when I go for the big drives it mostly happens, at 85% power they are straighter. I address the ball? about an inch behind the ball with my driver and I think that my shoulders are not parallel to the target, so it s like a outside in swing. Any help or suggestions will be great.

Shawn, I went to? the range twice last week and couldn't believe how much this helped me. The ball flight was amazing using your approach. Previously, I was definitely "facing the ball" as you mentioned, so my shoulders were open. I have been playing golf for 30 years and this is the best tip I've ever had. As you said ... "it feels so solid." :) I just need to "standardize" how high to tee it up.

Hi Shawn, I've been watching your videos these past few weeks? and you've emphasised greatly on instinctive golf. I used to have a problem with my weight shift but after watching your videos, I just decided to lift my right foot earlier so that I instinctively shift my weight to my left side or else my right toe would be crush or I'd fall down etc.. your videos and teaching techniques are by far the best i have seen :) i am a total novice with about 10 trips to the range and half a dozen trips to the course , i can hit around the 200 yard mark with my 4 iron 3 wood and driver ( all about the same ) is this normal ? bearing in mind i have like a 50/50 success rate of down the middle lol, watching and repeating? what you do in you vids makes it all so much easier to understand . regards james

it's quite interesting to see this drill. several years ago i would? obsessively video tape my swing, and i noticed when i took my practice swings without stopping my swing stayed on plane, unlike my actual swings. so then my goal was to replicate the feeling i was getting during those "nonstop" swings. it's nice to see there was some merit in my little discovery ;)

Yes; you want to feel that the width is created by centrifugal force resulting from the body getting out of the way of the Arm club unit's swing; we have a few threads on this in my forum and you should check it out! Shawn - great and critical clip here. In the pursuit? of width, I have become fixated on a super straight left arm going back - similar to Els, who is nearly hyper-extended. All I seem to doing is adding tension to the arm unit, which results in "holding on" to the whole damn thing into impact and through - blocking shots right and never giving myself a chance to relax, stretch out, and release. Is it acceptable for me to abandon the notion of a dead straight left arm going back? Many thanks!

I watched this video for about the 100th time today (like all your videos) and just thought is this why? when you watch on TV the pros look like they are lining up to the ball and the ball is out to the very front of the club head (their arms are relaxed and not taut) then before they swing they taut their arms and the ball ends up being in the middle of the club. I think I have been lining up with the ball in the middle with "un-taut" arms and pulling the ball left...thoughts???

Hi Shawn, Feel like ive just got the last piece of the jigsaw. I've been trying all the other stuff on your vidoes but still i've been hacking up the turf or topping the ball. Realllly struggled to maintain constant good contact with the ball. Keeping the arms taut to the side of the chest and swinging forward before the backswing with a straight arm solved all the problems. Went from my average round of 100- 106 to 89 straight off!! Hi Shawn, This taut arms technique (IMO) is one of the most? important things in the swing. The taut arms will give you the width you need and help maintain all the other concepts you talk about. For most golfers if they are like myself tend to get lazy in mid swing and lose the taut, You have to maintain that taut sensation all the way thru. This was so the key for me. One other thing was the fact that I was a little to tall at address and adjusted that as well. I am CRUSHING my irons now

The last part of moving to this swing was this part. It was hard for me as my right elbow? was flying a little. The results occurred fairly quickly at the driving range. The hard part was taking it to the course. It is hard to think about your backswing and hit through the ball. Also, this has also made my 1/2 3/4 shots a lot more consistent. FOR ME, thinking about the feel about how much the elbow is bent on the backswing is a much better thought than thinking where my hands need to be.

I was turned on to Shawn's swing theories hoping to relieve some joint issues that I was having. Going into this new more nautral swing I thought I was going to get a higher shot dispersion than with the "Leadbetter" more mechanical? swing methods. I was WRONG. Over the past two months I have had the highest birdie to round ration in my life. When I get in a groove I am throwing darts from GW to 7 iron. Now I just have to get rid of the 3-5 severe tee shot farts that are still in my game.

What do you recommend for this; when I lift the club off the ground for my normal backswing, the face of the club will close slightly (maybe 5-10 degrees). Is this a problem?? Hi Shawn, I struggled with the concept of taut because in order to maintain the tautness I used muscular strength, for me I swing best when my arms feel soft and my wrists are loose. For me an important distinction is not to employ muscular strength when swinging and as you say let? gravity do the work.
