I love David Mitchell, but he's completely wrong, and if he was raised speaking gaidhlig, he'd know that. I am surprised however that a man whose family were once refugees from the clearances would tout the decline of gaidhlig? as "natural selection". No. A large part of the decline was due to the genocide and forced displacement in the gaidhlig speaking highlands during the clearances. Also we can revive it! You don't need to dump millions into that, just support gaidhlig education!

I think something to keep in mind that? David is speaking, primarily, as an Englishman and member of the Scottish diaspora, not a Scot. It's obvious that he wouldn't see the use in keeping Gàidhlig alive. Him learning the language would do him no good and would neither do the language nor Scotland any good. He also doesn't seem to consider that Welsh and Irish Gaelic were well on their way to being where Gàidhlig is today before considerable efforts of government and individuals reversed trend.

Nationalism doesn't have really much to do with pride. You wouldn't be proud of being in a wealthy family; but who should your parents' money go to when they die? Certainly not the house guests, but it should go to the children. Nationalism is belief in inheritance of land to its rightful people. I? disagree with Carlin's argument; breaking up pride into biased self-definitions and then arguing against them is like arguing against a god that you created.

Yes it is! Language is the primary basis for the existence of ethnic groups. Therefore, if a language dies, the ethnic group dies with it. The people? carry on but at the expense of their cultural identity. That is a form of racism. It may be cultural as opposed to being based on say skin colour, but it is racism nevertheless.

no it's not just a game it's a historic monument to Gaelic society that thousands of years ago just incorporated evrery move they could thing of with a ball into some sort of organised game in which football, rugby and basketball came? from. Will require a lot of money but can b done. What I? have in Celtic Football is the equivalent of owning Soccer before anybody knew about it or played it. Huge potential. By using all 17 Soccer rules, players and officials from soccer can easily take up Celtic Football. We can use Soccer fields and balls, etc. I'm so cunning. I'm too much of a Rugby player so won't be going back to Gaelic Football. Celtic Football is better by far .... and can alone bring down Soccer as the #1 Football code.

Well good luck with your invented game. You're going to find it hard to get it off the ground without the backing of an organization and established playing base. The rules aren't really that hard to remember, I suggest you persevere? with Gaelic football. I've seen beginners take it up and have no trouble remembering the rules. I don't know where you're coming from there.

Gaelic Football is a great game ... to play & watch. And I grew up playing & loving Rugby League. But the rules are awkward & difficult 4 newcomers to take up the sport. I tried playing it, I got p155off with remembering to toe tap. Most of the world play soccer, use soccer balls, have soccer fields. All those players could easily learn and play GAELIC FOOTBALL if the GAA made the laws simpler and like Soccer. But the GAA won't do this ..... but I will ....with CELTIC FOOTBALL. ?

Gaelic Football needs major revamping of the rules to bring in line with Soccer. I have done this with my sport of Celtic Football -- an improved version of Gaelic. Already tested it in a couple of schools in NZ. All Soccer rules? except:: + Score Goal(10 pts), Double, or Single pts. + Heldball - must bounce the ball only once if dodging + Groundball -can play the ball with hands if outside Penalty box and above the knees + Contact rules like basketball Otherwise, just play the game as Soccer

Scottish Gaelic is not related to English? or any of the other Germanic languages like German or Dutch- it is part of the Celtic language family with sister languages in Irish and Manx Gaelic. It is less closely related to other Celtic languages like Welsh, Cornish and Breton. Sadly, unlike Irish which still has many native speakers, barely anybody speaks Scottish Gaelic as a first language these days. But it is taught in schools and used in the media as you see here.

I read a compiled version of all the surviving Norse legends by Kevin Crossely-Holland some years ago, it's well worth a read if you can find it. As far as the padding goes, this actually allows players to hit harder on tackles - similar to how boxing gloves actually allow fighters to strike with more force without damaging their hands. American football isn't for everyone, but anyone who says it's for "fags" is ignorant. There's no necessity for me to learn it. I do it for me. I will never know what possessed my family to abandon the language of our ancestors. My great-great? grandparents came here (US) from Scotland. Their reasons, I will never know. What I do know is that I've always felt out of place here, and am working hard on my plans to return to my ancestral homeland. usually scottish gaelic and irish gaelic can be? understood by each other. now welsh,well no. and scots are a mix of irish setttlers and picti.....there is an interesting show on youtube about scottish history by neil oliver....( i met him once, very well educated, very nice)....peace

well they weren´t wrong..basically they were Irish colonisers of Scotland..the traffic between the countries has been constant in both directions for centuries..the difference between the two languages is not so big..perhaps you could compare it to Portuguese and Spanish..a native speaker with a bit of study could master the? other..
