Its not the hand production that makes? these cars exclusive and difficult to produce. Its the attention to detail. A Ferrari simply doesn't have much in common with your average ecconobox. Everything used in the production phase is premium. BTW, Ferrari churns out approx 25,000 cars a year. They built 500 Enzos ffs. Where did you pull that "400 samples" figure from?

Can't really check the reliability of these cars, but if I had that much money I probably wouldn't care about reliability. No wonder this garbage fails after 20 years... its poorly designed from the start... those valves and cyclinders and timing chain is going to wear out, and I can see several dozen other single points of failure that will destroy the whole engine... oil pan bolt falls out... collant system gets a leak... timing gets out? whack... engine over heats and detonates... valve or cyclinders break in a running engine. Someone needs to design a better engine.

You take an "efficient" 180HP 1.8L engine and I'll take an "inefficient" 500HP 7L and we'll stick them identical cars and see which is better at propelling that car fast. i think you need to get a job working with scientist to make a cleaner engine to put in? cars because this is simply amazing!!! me and some friends made a wooden car out of old junk, wood, nails screws and duct tape...we couldn't find a way to actually make wheels so we cheated and used 3 spare tires from an old jeep... but it looked like crap but it was pretty sturdy... the only thing was missing was and engine a steering wheel and (brakes). the one reason we lost it it turn over in a ditch. =(

You could of course utilize a heat exchanger? to boil water from wasted exhaust heat and use that to run a steam engine. The most efficient way would be to use some kind of turbine. There is even the concept of a stirling engine which would be thermodynamically efficient, as well as a brayton-cycle turbine. These wouldn't impact engine output in a negative as they are separate from the engines energy continuum. On that note, I'd love to see a wooden turbine, Matthias!

This is still more handmade than most engines out there. When an engine makes over a thousand horsepower, you don't want an engine that might have a bolt loose or too tight. To be honest, I really don't care if its totally 'handmade', if I was ever able to drive a car with one of these in it, the engine would sure have? a whole lot of soul to it as it pushed my eyes into the back of my skull. Well you can't please everyone i'm not in love with VW everything but I have ultimate respect for the bugatti. It's a piece of high class engineering and its a fascinating project to read about. It's been in production since 2005 (so about 7 years) and the buyers are very wealthy and very influential people so I can't imagine that serious problems would not surface. It mirrors the mclaren F1 project with such level of detailed engineering it will going strong with 100k on the clock.?

wow, being a mechanic i can appreciate the insane force needed to accomplish this feat. he blew the "mains". just think how much force is needed to separate the crank (what is left in the tractor with the pistons hanging out in space) from the block and heads(what he actually runs over). ? my guess is they ended up building up massive amounts of blow-by and overpressuring the crankcase. just an educated guess...

Dan, what about using a sterling engine in conjunction with a wood stove? You could in theory use the heat to generate a small amount of power and use a small? grid tie inverter. That's assuming you live in a cold climate and were going to run the stove anyway.

It wouldn't matter if the engine was 100% efficient. Unless all the energy was going to run the engine it would use up its energy. Engines do work by moving objects. Energy is used up in moving(or trying to move) the object so it can't be used to run the engine. If it was, the engine wouldn't go anywhere because the energy used for moving the object would be running the engine. The 2nd law? has to do with an isolated system which I don't think a jet engine could be considered.

The air is? mixed with the fuel for combustion(a controlled explosion) just like a piston aircraft or car.The air is compressed so more energy is released when the air is combusted. It is also important to keep high pressure at the front of the engine to keep it from flaming out and allowing the combusted fuel from coming through the front of the engine. Also remember some of the air's energy is used to actually turn the turbine that compresses the air,so some of the energy isn't used for thrust

What? Are you joking? Energy can't be created or destroyed. It can change form though. A force would spin the disk. Energy is used to create the force(a FORCE can be created or "applied"). Energy is USED(not created) again to create an equal force to stop the disk spinning. I am not sure what mechanism causes the disk to spin or stop so? I can't say exactly how the energy is used. But a thing will spin or move at constant velocity forever until something else messes with it(including friction)
