True, there's misdiagnosis out there too (I meant to add that along with the over-prescribing and black market medication abuse points). However, my husband and brother would have benefited tremendously had they been diagnosed as children and not just as adults. And to make a blanket statement that ADHD meds turn people into zombies is just irresponsible and wrong. It tough enough choosing to take that road without? being pressured with misinformation like this.

He didn't? call ADHD a myth. He called ADHD being an epidemic a myth, which I agree on. I do believe in ADHD, and you make a valid point, but it's also important to accept the fact that ADHD has been used as an excuse. In fact, I was almost diagnosed with ADHD when I was a kid, when the real issue was that I wasn't being challenged enough at school because I was gifted, and that I was just getting bored (Not bragging). We both agree, we're just emphasizing on different parts of the argument. :P

Of course that happens too, but this just damages the reputation of ADHD and its treatment for those who really do suffer from it (and really do benefit from medication). There are so many people out there who don't even believe ADHD is a real thing and Sir Ken perpetuates that myth. He has obviously never? lived in close range to an ADHD sufferer or seen the benefits that treatment can bring.

He doesn't understand that ADHD is a real affliction in most cases and that treatment (including medication) can be a positive life-changer. It should not make "zombies" out of people if prescribed correctly, quite the opposite. The media is keen to jump on cases where ADHD medication has been misused, either over-prescribed,? or sold on the black market to college students to get better results on their papers or tests.

Just what we need, another buzz word ... You limit kids by not making them fluent in the three Rs. Teach a child to read and express him/herself with good grammar, and make him/her numerate. There's your grounding for everything else. He aint WRONG, but he doesn't really have anything useful to say. Siegfrieg Engelmann has taken education to the level of a SCIENCE with Direct Instruction (DI), and hardly anyone knows or cares. Michel Thomas's language lessons use the same principles of design as DI to make em work 100 times more efficiently than any other? language learning program out there. Engelmann and Michel Thomas both have (had) critical marketing failures, but if you want to fix education, LOOK TO THEM!

I'm so glad I live in a country where I don't need to buy a diploma. I have always loved school and I still love studying languages? and literature at uni. And sir Ken Robinson is brilliant. I feel like high school needs to better prepare students for their future. I am halfway through college right now and some of my friends literally have no idea what they want to do with their lives. They haven't even declared a major yet. I feel like, if high schools helped us prepare for what we want to do, we wouldn't have this problem. Pseudo-Intellectual discussion is not the direction for an undergrad obviously. There is a framework which includes general study and a liberal arts ed in the first two years of university. This provides a basic framework for learning. You can't learn? much of any value by naval gazing. Stimulation is exploring within a framework. You should have been googling & doing research to be verified while at school. Group lead teaching is for those who aren't bright enough.. to take in a lecture..

I dropped out of University after 1/2? year for same reasons, although I wasn't paying for my education. I was being paid a scholarship. I actually care tons more about science and stuff now than I did before. And I think the future of education is in science/tech informational and (other than that) educational (how-to) videos. Besides all that, I think in current state teachers should all be voted for/against by students annually to keep the bad ones away. This is plain democratic obviousness.

I know it may not be 'correct' to say so, but as a High School teacher I always punish? misbehaviour in a socially-aware manner. It's all to do with the way they've been brought up. It makes perfect sense to me to hand out a lighter range of punishments to wealthier, middle class kids- their parents' shame & disapproval is usually harsh enough punishment. I don't think the goal of this video was to promote a teacher-less classroom. Right now especially, technology (and the internet, primarily) can be used to *help* teachers. I know my school uses these things called "Gizmos" on ExploreLearning, and they just reinforce lessons that teachers have already presented to the class. It is also meant to show how class discussion and the student's ability to bounce ideas off of peers can? be a fantastic learning tool if harnessed correctly.

Its important to look at the over all cost here. One laptop can reasonably last u 5 years, if not longer, so over the course of a ten year school cycle ull need 2 laptops. On the other hand without it ull need books every year, pencils and paper every week and all? kinds of other instruments. Looking at the big picture the laptops are quite a bit cheaper.

This video is really quite ignorant, it says that children can't learn in such circumstances. However, my school is quite similar, my classmates seem to be fine with it, they get A's if they try hard enough. Similarly, if you want to change it, then? wait your turn, if you want these changes, then wait until you get a job with education and work your way up the ranks, it's very much different if you complain about it to the decision maker. They have programs that allow the teacher to take control remotely or just view multiple student's screens. It actually makes it much harder to slack-off and much easier for the teacher to see who is having difficulty. I'd be more worried about theft (students pawning the? devices off).

A revolution of the current system to something presented by the video would encompass changes? much greater than what you can actually see by the video. Curriculum would need to be looked at; "What should we be learning?" In particular, the division of classes would need to be looked at too. Why do we divide people by age and force them through the same regimen, when some need, some don't. Classes based on ability and interests are more useful. And if you need a break, take one.

The ethical validity of IP laws is questionable. Most kids have no respect for IP, but they don't have lobby groups. If only they did. Universities are centers of progress in many fields, but ARE held back by law. Whether this? is justified or not - the reality is that it weakens the university's ability to be a valid universal information gatekeeper and educator, which is why it's worth mentioning in the context of this video "rethinking education".

Pleaseput "Neue Mathematik" into the search bar. In the seventies and early eighties german children learned to think in terms of sets and mappings and propositional? functions. I was one of them. Later we were taught traditonal modern math too and used the set theory fluently. But the mapping operations and the propositional funtions were somehow forgotten. When studying mathematics, after I discoverd that I could use the very same mental operations.as in elementary school again, it became easy.

Believe me folks. I know better what math is than she does. I got a Phd in Math and philosophy of math an I am actually a math teacher. The reasoning method is the right one. You learn to split a problem into some problems od known sort. And this very method is expandable to all kinds of problems, not just math, but? literally all kinds of problems from any science or any kind of interaction with world and people. I can honestly say what I just watched is appalling. By the? way, memorizing the multiplication tables and knowing how to find the lowest common denominator using primes (2,3,5,7,11,..) are the keys arithmetic. Unbelievable, they are using distribution laws to alter the algorithms. The reason they are teaching inferior methods is they want your child to fail. The government knows what material and methods to use. I can guarantee in the private schools the proper methods are being taught.

I must admit those books are a bit of a joke. And I tend to? do all my calculations on paper or in my head by breaking the sums down into their individual parts. I find this works fairly well and quickly for multiplication but it is extremely slow when doing division, since then I have found long division to be a more suitable approach for division. In addition, I try to do as many calculations as possible in my head, or mentally avoiding the use of a calculator wherever possible. :)

It's obvious that math reformation has good intentions. Who wouldn't want to make sure that their child is learning the best and most important mathematics to ensure a bright academic future (whether it contain heavy mathematics or not). The reasoning through problems is great; Richard Feynman would probably ensorse this approach! a few things 1) I use this technique they're calling reasoning all the time. If you do it enough, it easy, and you don't need paper. In the real? world, I'd be hard pressed to even locate paper in my house, and I never have a pen. What I do have is a phone, computer, laptop, and calculators all over the place. I do math all the time. It's probably been a decade since I didn't do it in my head or on a calculator because the standard algorithm is pretty crappy for doing math in your head.

In the future, give 'watching? a video for comprehension' a try; it makes one quite a bit less idiotic. Quite clearly @ 6:40(ish) in, she says that these other methods are wonderful 'teaching tools'. In other words, one uses many different methods to explain the abstract notion of how multiplication works, and then one presents an algorithm that is used for efficient resolution of problems. Teaching in Finland was very thorough, very slow and relaxed, no stress, nobody ever rushes you to do anything, everybody can take their time. Apart from the government inspections and all what that means, schools in England are good: great ideas, lots of attention to the? children. Great resources and modern teaching methods, and in a good school you get a lot of teacher support. Not enough music and singing, perhaps :-). Finnish kids eat much healthier school dinners, as well.

I'm a teacher in England now, but I had some of my teacher training at a Finnish university. The biggest difference to me is that here it's all about government inspections, observing, constantly setting-achieving targets otherwise some funding might get withdrawn. All the teaching focuses on the exams from day 1, not on what the pupils actually need. I have to constantly provide "evidence of learning", spend my time doing paperwork, 4/5? training sessions will be on pprwrk and not teaching.

I'm an IT teacher and I started recording some videos using Fraps and using it in the classroom. Mainly because I had one class that had no interest in IT whatsoever (Well a few do) had huge classroom management issues. I was busy dealing with the kids running around and the quiet kids got frustrated because they couldn't learn. When I used my videos I couldn't believe it. It was dead silent you could hear a pin drop. Even the tough cases got engaged. It? really does work!

Lysol555, That's exactly what they shouldn't do. If they allow any old lecturer or teacher to make videos, the value of Khan Academy would diminish. They have to clearly vet and only allow world class lecturers to add content. For example, I believe they have some videos that have been made by couple of world renowned doctors on medical information. So, they should only get world renowned people in their fields to? add content, not just anyone.

Surprizingly, people in different countries find very similar insights, but then get crushed when face the public education system and its tremendous? resistance to change. i laughed until i cried...cried because this painfully true conversation is what I have witnessed in? my early yearls of teachng. That s*@t is what is going behind closed doors... a message to parents with children who could be targeted...stay involved in your child's education. If left op to the teache,r he very well could be "that kid"

For whatever reason, school districts continue? to get away with putting physically disabled students in special education classes. When will it stop? They need to stop shoving everyone who might have a hang nail into special education classes. It's entirely inappropriate, but they continue to get away with it! It's time that they be held accountable for providing the tools, supports and services that are necessary for students to thrive in general education courses.

It is funny how the immediate solution to an educational issue is Special Education. Parents know your rights and don't allow your children to be place inappropriately because someone does not? want to do his/her job.
