He was shining a light on what he thought was an over-emphasis of the idea that the economy would fix itself and stabilize in the long run. i'd argue that the only thing the market and for profit system does is make profits of problems. if it were actually solving problems, we'd have completely clean energy instead of energy that pollutes our waters, air, and bodies, and entire ecosystem at that. we'd all have health care, since we have the means and technology to provide health care for all. same? goes for healthy food and clean water. those are all human needs yet they're only made available to those that can afford them.

Since we have more than enough domestically, you're right; there is? no need. The "imperialism" stems from needing to expand the market for our worthless money, not our products. To buy oil almost anywhere, a country has to first buy dollars. The profit system has led to exponential leaps in innovation since the dawn of time. The problem is state involvement in picking winners and losers. The market can correct itself easily, whereas the gov't has always been wrong.

well no doubt that the self-interest of big oil stands in the way of alternate competition. it's not new. oil companies have owned the patents to longer lasting more powerful car batteries for decades, and have refused to allow them to be produced (see: Ovonics, Chevron, & Cobasys). I know that's their view, thinking in terms of profits. But there's constant energy surrounding us, at we leave it on the table (solar, wind, geothermal, tidal, wave). I always just thought: to leave oil in the ground, is to leave money on the table. Again, you can thank the gov't-sanctioned cartells of BP and OPEC for helping to regulate their competition out of the market. Batteries gat better all the time, but are not good enough (and/or cheap enough) to justify their use. Again if it were currently profitable, someone would be doing it. Space stations use such batteies, yes-- on? public money, at prices no individual would pay.

yes capacitors = battery. even if there weren't any in existence, it's not because of a lack of technological realization. batteries have continually gotten stronger and more compact, so in my view that's the least of the issues. and oil? is relatively scarce, and becoming scarcer with use as oil isn't renewable. and capacitors could be built with durability in mind. we only know cheaply made batteries that expire, but think about space stations that also use batteries, top of the line ones.

Also, I think anyone who could provide electricity cheaper would make a killing, but investing in that much realestate just isn't worth it. It is evedently not so abundant, since nobody is investing in it. And profit is the whole point. If nobody can make money producing it, then why? do so? Any way it is produced, there is a negative cash flow, so everyone is poorer as a result. That doesn't make it cheap at all.

Oil is by no means scarce, and the problem is that it IS being controlled, instead of being drilled as fast as possible by every mom & pop who can invest in an oil? well. There is no capacitor (I think you mean battery) that can store 1/3 of a day's electricity, especially when night is when most electricity gets used. Batteries also take resources to produce and would have to be continuously replaced from use.

I m studying mech engineering too, and? this semester we have a compulsory module of management studies and economics is a part of it. Honestly telling, i hate this. I mean like the subject is very interesting but the fact is that now our engineering mind to set to calculations instead of memorizing things. The Great Depression seems to say government stimulus will prop up demand while consumer demand recovers. But there is something to say about staying within budget. I personally feel fixing the budget won't help right now, but it should be tackled when the economy is on firm footing.

I think the subject of math, in the context of economics, is really a subjective understanding depending on our perspectives. I don't doubt anything you're saying to the importance of mathematics. But let me pose this to you: Adam Smith's theory of absolute advantage doesn't require any calculations to prove the theory; The equation itself is it's proof. While I have to say that many undergrad programs are being watered down so people with an interest in econ but planning to go on to say, law school, won't be deterred from the subject, econ still involve to simple math. That is a rather inaccurate description of economics. To say economics doesn't involve calculations is like to? say theoretic physics doesn't involve calculations. Theorizing is first part to form a basis as to how you think the world works, the relationship between some variables etc, and then there is the analysis of the reality. Econometrics is all about calculations and a huge part of the field.

Economics doesn't involve calculations, there's no cause for using mathematics to study economics. Economics? is purely conceptual, you learn economics by studying one theory at a time. Learning a theory doesn't require you to make any calculations, but it does require knowing certain equations. You must study a theory until you understand it's equation; In economics theories are represented by equations. Knowing how an equation derives from a theory is the way you learn the theory.

Math at the undergrad level is less complicated.? Mostly involving basic calculus like first order condition for profit maximizing, partial derivatives, Lagrange multiplier etc. If you decide to go on to an honor's program, the math will be considerably more difficult. Adv macro, micro, and econometric required for honor's programs overlap with master's level material. MA is uncommon in the US, but widely available in UK and CAN. So in lieu of MA material, part of 1st yr PhD material.

For example, if you said, "Do you believe in the Austrian School theories, like Peter Schiff does", they would probably say, "No. That model doesn't work, because it ignores labor markets and government intervention". The question was basically just do you think America is on the right course to create jobs or do we need to do something else? How is that going to cause investment fluctuations? But this is just the point: they are not going to make irresponsible comments just because they are in an economic forum. Due to their high level of visibility, making off-the-cuff comments could be a real effect, causing investment fluctuations and lack of confidence in the economists who are spending all day every day thinking about these problems. They are not entertainers. Their unwillingness to comment is a sign of professionalism. Easy answers are probably wrong? answers.
