As a fan of the book, I cringe whenever I see any reference to Coppola's movie because it invents a Dracula/Mina romance that does not exist anywhere? in the novel, and totally desecrates the Jonathan/Mina relationship that was the emotional center of Bram Stoker's actual story. I often say that Stoker's name should not even be in the title.

I only laugh in sadness, because Dracula is not supposed to be a "vampire love story." At least? the novel isn't. This version bears no resemblance to Bram Stoker's novel at all, and may in fact be indirectly responsible for the trend of romantic vampire movies like Twilight, which you ridicule.

After reading the book I can say without hesitation that this movie is an overrated piece of non sense. More than half of the scenes in the movie are? pure invention I.e The love story between Mina and Dracula yuuuk!? Stick to the book people. The only thing that saves the movie are the performances of Gary Oldman and Anthony Hopkins. Otherwise this movie belongs in the same category as the twilight saga: The Romantic junk section.

Really shows his talent doesn't it? However I do feel I need to point out that what you've said isn't strictly accurate. Bela Lugosi learned the part of Dracula phonetically, however this was while he was acting in the stage play of Dracula, by the time he was playing Dracula in the movie he could speak english, however I'm not sure as to? what extent. when watching old films you must? bare in mind that film was still in the developing stages, most actors that went into films where either stage actors to start with, because of this many actors would still act as they would in a play, film and acting developed over time its become more realistic in how actors portray characters. This movie was from a completely different time. In the future its quite possible that people will look back at our films and think our acting was shoddy too.

When he saw the? count scaling on the wall, that's when he knew it was real. he could not escape because the windows were too high and he could not open the front door. I should also bring up the? fact that Dracula falling in love isn't original either. Various versions had already done it. One version that was actually good (and was also ripped off by Coppola) was the 1973 version. In that Dracula falls for Lucy yet still had to hypnotize her. As a result he's shown as a lonely guy, yet he's also completely evil as opposed to a constant whiner. Nosferatu (1979) also did a good job there and Let the Right One is probably the best at showing free-willed love.

I get that, but for me it adds nothing. Not only does it simply? borrow from much better films like The Mummy and La Belle et La Bete, but seeing what was essentially rape in the book turned into "true love" just seems wrong and makes her look idiotic. The guy happily raped/murdered/transformed her friend, imprisoned her husband, and fed his Brides a baby so you'd think she'd stay away from him. Besides she completely rats him out once he becomes ManBat, so the idea of accepting him is ruined.

I've yet to see the 1977 version, though I've heard plenty of intelligent people say that this is a much better dedication to Bram stoker's Novel...Everyone has their opinion it seems. The love story in my opinion ADDS to it, yet there are plenty of people that hate it. To me it represents what is still Human inside of Vlad after he forsakes "God" and becomes one with the "Powers of Darkness." It actually is realistic seeing that Vlad was? a real person and not just a monster.

I'd say the 1977 version was the best. Despite some liberties and a few dated effects, it does far more justice to narrative, themes, and characters, and contains good performances and strong atmosphere that is both subtle and surreal at the same time. By contrast Coppola's (to me) is a silly, egotistical, and overhyped train wreck that contains no amount of? subtlety and features hammy acting and a shallow and contrived love story that completely re-writes the entire point of the book.

Why are all you hating on this movie? Coppala, for the most part did a wonderful job at being accurate to the book and giving the movie a very Dark Aura about it. In my opinion it is a good dedication? to the MAN Bram Stoker. Reeves isn't as bad an actor as you are making him out to be... Like you guys know shit about acting anyways. This movie beats the fuck out of ANY vampire movie you put it next to, so all you fuckers can go watch Twilight and suck on your thumbs.

Blood looks more like red sperm making it's way across the scene. Also, a neo-classical movie that somehow descended into a cowboy's chasing the coffin? across the mountains movie. A very overrated portrayal? of Dracula but not as overrated as Gary Oldman-who is a very fine actor. A real hash made of the story. Langella cannot "hang" with Lugosi, Palance, or Louis Jordan. I respect Lee's performances but he has so little dialogue in most of the Hammer films its hard to judge.

is? this a good film version? is there nudity? i liked the 1992 version better than the 1931? film, though Bela Lugosi was excellent as Dracula. but the 1992 version was closer to the novel, with some minor liberties taken that served to expand and help the story rather than hurt it.

Glad you knowledged the Louis Jourdan version produced by? the BBC back 1977. Which is perhaps the nearest to what Stoker envisioned!!!!!!!!!! To be fair, Coppola's verison was a good attempt though he could've casted better actors to play Harker and Mina

I didn't either, but it kept in credit with the opening credits where they said the movie was based on the Dean/Balderstone play. This was the 1927 Broadway production that was cited by? the 1931 version, scripted by Garrett Fort. In that movie, and that play Mina died, and in both she was Dr Seward's daughter.

If budget concerns were not involved, you can be sure because those scenes show the evil and demonic character of Dracula and his brides--not in keeping with this "revisionist" Dracula. Langella was better than Gary Oldman in Francis Ford Coppola's...sorry I meant to say Bram Stoker's (?) Dracula--but Lugosi, Lee, Palance, and most of all Louis Jourdan were much better. I did not like the contrived and cheesy ending. ?

O.K. I am trying to find the original uncut version of this skit. I remember the FIRST time? it aired when Dracula told Wanda "by the crack of dawn and we shall rule the underworld" Her reply was "let me get these drawls out of the crack of my butt" and she pulled them out of her butt!!! It was sooo funny and my family laughed so hard. When they showed the repeat they had cut that part out?? I guess it was considered to raunchy for T.V. at that time. I wish I could find it.

Thanks rickw...you are absolutely correct here. The genre took a nosedive after this movie, and the next monster movie was: Abbott & Costello meet Frankenstein! The veteran horror film actors viewed this movie as a slap in the face of disrespect for their previous movie work, but history is strange indeed...this comedy farce? is considered to be one of the best comedy movies ever made...and in my opinion, it is!

I personally liked it enough (or at least I liked it more than other films by Franco and more than Coppola's version or the really bad Dracula films) though my biggest complaint was how little Kinski had to do. He was trying, but the character was very limited in that version. Still it's interesting how it came full circle with him.

You want to know what's funny? This movie came out in 1979 the same year Herzog remade Nosferatu. Bruno Ganz played the role of Jonathan Harker. Recently both of them appeared and did a scene together in the recent movie Unknown. I was watching that and thinking 'It's like Dracula and Harker are meeting in a completely different film!'. I'm afraid there's only so much? that even he could do in that respect, though I wouldn't mind seeing Dracula clobber Edward and mercilessly grant Bella's request to become one of his vampire slaves. Unfortunately, Edward's problem is that he's in Twilight; a series of stories that couldn't be worse if it tried. I don't know how many of you actually know that Vlad Tepes, the Romanian ruler who inspired the Dracula legends and this song, know that actually he is one of the best rulers Romania ever had.
