He doesn't fail to save most people. People, as you have shown, choose to reject Him. They need saving from sin and temptation. Take some time to study this. People study this as their life, and their faith is strengthened when they find the historical and medical FACTS about Christ. Read The Case For Christ. That does not justify what they did. You're trying to justify wrongdoings so you can satisfy your disbelief. Jesus had all the right and still does. He has the right to do anything, and who are you to talk back to God? If you read Genesis, Adam had the will power to fight temptation (the snake was Satan, not a random snake, guys). My brother was jailed and charged with a felony because my father had forgotten his prescription in my brother's car. They eventually dropped it when we refused to pay any of their extortion and educated them on how costly we would make this for them. I agree with you and think at least one of Harris' points is very weak: when he criticises the Christian doctrine for saving a rapist who repented before death... Harris makes it look like one could repent his horrific sins without any suffering, just to trick God and enjoy eternal Heaven. Is there any evidence for a God who is good? No, there isn't any. I think the real problem here is the difference in the goals between atheism and Christianity. Christianity's basis for morality being that God is good, knows what is good, and the goal is to believe in him. Atheism, on the other hand, as Harris is suggesting, I think avoids the subjectivity of the morality of an act (is something truly wrong or truly right) and focuses on the goal that he explains as a state of best well-being. These differences being different 'definitions' of? morality.

Dr. Craig and Dr. Harris are extremely intelligent individuals that are speaking to what I would assume is an extremely intelligent audience in the subject matter of philosophy and theology. Notice that this isn't really a debate. Harris systematically avoids addressing Craig's arguments and answering his rebuttals. Instead, he changes the subject to Tsunamis. This is proof that Harris is extremely poor when it comes to philosophy, and? that he ultimately got creamed in the debate. This was really humiliating for Harris.

Yes, artificial intelligence is a reality, but as I said in my last comment, the robots in question are extremely stupid. We as humans normally define intelligence? as something simalar to us in terms of behavior. Examples like art, language, and math, that only the smartest animals are capable of achieving. However. Depends on how smart the robot is. If the robot has programs which allow it to learn, then the human designer is no longer needed. However, our technology in this area, while it is increasing, isn't so good at that level. I wasn't really thinking in terms of smart/dumb. More types of approach. A computer can master vast amounts of data but as for? using it for any purpose of its own devising, it can't because it it isn't sentient. Even without a brain an eathworm can detect and respond to a dangerous footfall because it IS sentient. How can intelligence be defined, then, and is Artificial Intelligence a reality?

No, improvition/adaptation does not define natural intelligence. I could understand why one would think so. Robots have been designed to improvise according to their enviroment. Computers don't have limbs, but robots do. So if you make a robot with a computer thats smart enough, then yes it can improvise, and because this would be classified as an artificial intelligence, improvition/adaptation would not define? natural intelligence.

Yes, I can see that a stroke might be a more direct analogy, yet a human limb functions neuronally as an extension of the human brain. Somehow the brain diagnoses the fault in the system, and without any pre-programming enables the limb to make a kind of compensation - though we remain quite unaware of how our neurons do this. A computer could not generate new ways of using its own components to help itself if it was damaged. Does improvisation/ adaptation? define natural intelligence ?

Computers crashing and a human breaking a limb isn't a proper comparison. A proper comparison would be a computer crashing, and a human stroke victum. However I will answer your question, when a computer crashes for whatever reason, the damage is being done to the "brain". This means that information, certain software, and other programs can be lost. The human body is relatively good at improvising. In your? example the human already knows that he/she can get home by using his good leg.

The difference between natural and artificial stupidity. Well, this all stems from the neurons. If by stupidity you mean just plain dumb, then this is the result of multiple things which includes, lack of sufficiant neurons(to be what we consider smart) and damage of the brain. If neurons are kept from connecting properly then the information being? passed through them is disrupted. This on a large scale could pose a serious problem. There other ways to achieve stupidity though.

Lol, don't worry, it wasn't a full brain,(at least I don't think so), but just a few neurons. Anyway, the point was to show you the power the neurons have at animating things. Its quite hard to see with complex creatures like us and dolphins, ( the two species who just so? happen to have the largest brains in the world) however I was hoping that watching the video would help you better understand my position, and show you the complexity and "free will" having neurons can bring.

P.S. I also watched Rat brain robot as you suggested? but failed to grasp the mechanism involved. The impression given was that the robot was attempting to avoid contact with any object it encountered which is quite unlike a normally curious rat which appears driven to explore it's environmant. Thankyou for answering my question concerning the difference between natural and artificial intelligence. I also wondered if you could tell me the difference between natural and artificial stupidity? Also although computers are designed so you can control them, when they crash they crash completely. A human though, breaking an ankle say, could still hobble home by using muscles etc in the other leg which weren't which they weren't pre-programmed to do. Ok, what exactly am I missing? The only illusion in this is in Krugmans head when he thinks it's a good idea to try and trick the economy into behaving like it didn't suffer losses by taking on more debt. That will not help people get re-employed and even if they do it'll only last until the debt is called in. There is no scenario in which incurring deficits to make up for loss is helpful. People need to adapt to reality, not some fiction where putting you? in more debt is somehow helping you.

A business losing to the competition has to figure out how to offer a better quality of service or that business will eventually fail from inability to cover cost. It has nothing to do with greed. Without competition, you would have ONE company who sold you everything and when the owner realizes this he is tempted to become greedy. But then with it that person is forced to reject greed for survival.

Hofmeister reminds me of the Dick Cheney quote, "The American way of life is not negotiable." It sounds good, but it's nonsense. His suggestions all amount to amazingly expensive and complex tech that (whether they work or not) WILL raise energy prices (which translate into increased burden on the middle and lower classes) and WILL increase risk to ecosystems (no matter how much risk management is in place - and btw, safety costs extra). I think you mix up the Supreme Court's strict scrutiny "1)only means" to fulfill "2)compelling interest" requirements with the rational basis test, which only needs "legitimate interest". I've read his book "War is a Force that gives us Meaning" (what a pretentious title) and though his book is extremely well written and dripping with original, sound philosophy I must object that his views on Black Bloc are? wrong. I personally know several in the Occupy Wall Street crowd. Their parents are in the top 5% of earners. The parents were dirt poor in high school. Odd how the poor got rich contrary to the mantra. The kids were not spoiled growing up. One on a full acedemic ride to Cornell and yet racked up 80K in student loans. Another is a boomagang kid. Graduated Rutgers with? honors but want to take a couple years off as vacation. His dad said you stay at home you work and pay going rates for rent.

What I think is odd is that the only thing the Occupy Movement could ever articulate is that they wanted? more government controls. Not just on financial institutions but on every aspect of people's lives. Then they complain that they are getting rousted from their camps. Most of these Occupy folks don't come from the working class. Most are/were students at the elite universities. They are just mad they can't start a job at $200+K/year with corner office.

Society works best when it cooperates and collaborates to do useful work, whether through small business, corporations or government. When people think/feel it's veered from serving their needs, Occupy,? Tea Party, Republican, they still have a right to redress grievances and to articulate a vision of making a more perfect union. That has been the Collective history of the United States.
