I watched Douglas perform this and i must say, although his voice is an amazing instrument, he did tend to play the part for laughs a little bit tooooo much on the night I watched him.? It verged on a pantomime dame. The part of Albin has so many layers and shades and i remember thinking "why is he so desperate for laughs". It kind of ruined the show a bit for me.

Never get tired of Cage. Part 6/4 part 4/4 time with drums and keyboards doing a sort? of counter rhythm "pulse". Banks' solo is very "Flight of the Bumble Bee". Love this genre of music with it's abrupt time signature and key changes. The more complex and busy the better. Like Jethro Tull. Yes, King Crimson, ELP, and the American equivilent: the supreme Kansas. These gentlemen are classically trained and very precise and in synch. Fun to read their sheet music.

Amazing how the band tranformed a song from a nearly obscure? 1974 album into a magnificent live medley with great stage theatrics and musicianship! Loved the original with Gabriel, and the remake with Collins is fantastic. Throughout, Tony Banks drives the hypnotic theme as it builds and builds.

I'm glad Gabriel left coz I love both of their music. 2 for 1 in my book. But I would have loved to see? Genesis continue with the abstract stage performances. I've seen them live twice however and they put on a superb show. missed the reunion tour coz 800 a ticket was insane. Seen Phil solo a few times too. Great times.

Actually, Cage did employ a painstaking process in composing 4'33". That is, it was a composition, rather than a simple gesture -- though it is not easy to see that this is the case. The procedures that he used for 4'33" were born out of those developed when composing Music of Changes, which in turn were born out of serial practices developed by Pierre Boulez and others. Cage has an amusing story to tell about how he wrote it. He built up each movement one rest at a time.?

I agree with you,? and disagree with Cage. Even so, I believe 4'33" to be an example of music, because what we have with that notorious piece is NOT just sounds, but sounds occuring in a certain context which has some of the elements of musical practice. For example, a stage, and audience, sometimes an instrument is presented, a beginning and end of the performance, movements, and, of course, sounds.

So he prefers Nature to Man. If one has this preference, being Man, what is one to do, if one is also interested in music as well as non-music? If you do not share this dilema with Cage, I think it is hard to sympathyze or even comprehend why a composer would do what he did.

Very well put, and I certainly agree. Perhaps I may have been more sympathetic? with Mr. Cage if he referred to the auditory qualities of natural sounds... birdsong, winds, water, the wonders that are not of the "world made by hand." I think of Glazunov's Seasons as well as Vivaldi's, and the fluid qualities of Debussy and Ravel.

I also understand that appreciating the grand designs of masters requires a different kind of listening, perhaps, than attending to sounds? not intended to be heard in a musical context.
