I agree with what you're saying (and for the record I do take an interest in certain parts of history), but personally I feel I only need to look at the history that I feel is relevant to me so I can shape my own future accordingly. What I meant was past events such as a drowned village are unlikely to happen again by modern standards and we, as people of the modern age, are not to blame for? events that occurred years ago. Which is what this Welsh gentleman appears to believe.

If you don't give a fuck about history, then you CAN'T care about modern life because you can't understand it. If we don't know how we got here, how the hell can we know where we are? SOME things aren't the same as they were a few centuries ago, but MOST things are exactly the same! Understanding the new in the permanent context saves the hassle of trying to reinvent the wheel. It also enables? us to learn lessons and analyse better. Your "modern life" rant sounds very old, very 1950s.

No it's you who has misunderstood the Welsh, the Scots and the Catholic Northern Irish don't want to be called British because england has turned the word British into english. He meant that, internationally, people tend to call us 'British' if we're from? England, Scotland or Wales because those are the three countries that make up Great Britain and they label us collectively as 'British'. I really don't understand how you got confused there...

'Great Britain' is a geographical term and refers to the island of land itself. So the Isle of Wight or Anglesey would not be in Great Britain, and MOST of Scotland, England and Wales would be in Great Britain. i.e. the largest island in the British Isles. The United Kingdom is a political term, and so includes Northern Ireland and all the? islands it owns. So the United Kingdom owns part of the island of Ireland as well, again a geographical term.
