Not sure exactly what you mean, but? if you're wondering if you can find a job, I'd say "yes." Especially if you're willing to travel. You probably won't be doing a lot of excavations though. Most archaeology, at least CRM archaeology (non-academic), consists of surveying, or walking around and looking for things, digging a shovel probe every 20 meters or so. Full-blown excavations are fairly infrequent (at least on the west coast of the USA).

You'd want to study? archaeology, anthropology, or even history, then take an archaeology field school (your school will help you find one).

I started digging in my back yard and went deep until I hit metal. A chinese man looked back at me from the bottom of the hole because it was his shovel that hit mine.? he said are you an archaeologist? and I said "Yes, are you"? and he replied "Yes" So we both discovered each other, and we both now reside on display in each others museums.

it's true that you need to go to university and get a degree in archaeology, or anthropology in the US, but if you live in a college town you can contact an archaeology professor and ask to volunteer. also, in America, every state? has an office of state archaeology. you can always contact them and ask them to let you know when there's a dig that you can visit or even volunteer to help. If you're not from the states, I'm sure there;s something similar in your country.

@REDDEADREDAMNTION You can join building groups and contractors. Also there's research at universities, curation at museums. But archaeology is so broad and teaches you snippits in chemistry,? physics, geology, geography and biology. You can go into many things. I'm taking my PhD next year in Zooarchaeology to go into scientific research on dig sites.

Sorry it? took me so long to respond! All of those specialties sound great. In the United States, a "shovel bum" (or freelance archaeologist) makes anywhere from $10/hr (on the east coast) to $20/hr + (on the west coast, esp. California), and it depends on the project. Having a family is easier if you have a full-time job where you can manage projects and spend more time in the office. Though not always as fun as freelancing, these jobs tend to pay more and offer benefits.
By: FaithHaney. on 22 Sep 11, 17:17:41
I currently work as a full-time archaeologist at a CRM (cultural resource management) firm, and make a decent living. Jobs are fairly competitive, but if you put your time in as a "shovel bum," work hard,? and get along well with your crew, you'll have a great chance at a full time job! Good luck!

You'll need a college degree in archaeology, anthropology, or history. You? could start work after your bachelor's (4-year degree), or maybe even the summer before you graduate if you're lucky. Have fun, and good luck!
