I think the only word I actually use out of all those would be chin wag, we say it all the time in the north east of England. other slang words? that kind of confuse people who I talk to over seas or even from down south would probably be "mint" as in "that was mint" basically saying something is awesome, maybe "class" too, which basically means awesome too "it was propa class like hew"

I'm English so can answer you. Some you could use in both countries and people in both countries would know what you mean. There are some that used only in England? or only in America and would seem strange in the other country. Realtor for example would never be used in the UK. Neither would Diaper. Film or movie could be used in both countries and people would know what you mean. We both watch each others movies and therefore know the differences

They didn't butcher it - they actually preserved things which died out in British English, like 'gotten'. People in the east of England said 'zee' in the 17th century, and when they emigrated to America, it became common there. People in Britain called autumn 'the fall' until the 19th century. As for spelling, 'colour' and 'realise' are influenced by Norman French, while? 'color' and 'realize' follow Latin and Greek. However, while I respect these? different forms, I don't use them - full stop!

If I ask you to speak English, that's easily understood, theres a variety of accents and dialects yes but the question its easily understood. If I ask you to speak 'American' however, that question's about as clear as dirt. Plus, with all respect, assuming that every English speaking nation shares the same cultural features is just naive, thats why we have multicultural learning :)

There will always be different versions of English around the world, so there's no point asking everyone to use the one we developed here in England. But what I would like to see is Americans calling their language 'American', not English. The differences might seem small, but the way a language is used reflects key characteristics of the culture whence it came, and with so many American teachers around the world claiming to teach? Yes, I do, I'm a doctorate level linguist. It is from the word DOT. Pronounced "dough." Dowery. Money. The bride price. Americans call money "bread" as a kind of joke, you know, dough is for making bread. Get it? Everyone argues about okay? and thinks they are right, but they just aren't. But then, regarding speed, I gather your roads are given a speed on determining? the best speed for that particular road, whereas here the speed is given on the likihood of a pedestrian being on it. So, roads such as single track country lanes with blind corners are 60mph. Which is, amazing to think just 10mph less than you would legally be able to drive at on a motorway or dual carriageway.

I think you should have made a greater distinction between American and Canadian English, because some of the terms you used were not correct for regions of the US. i.e. we say blinker, bumper, semi-truck (or 18 wheeler), and? although we don't really use crossroads, we will say, cross street.

Highway, Freeway, Parkway, Interstate, Expressway, Toll Road, Turnpike, Tollway (The latter 3 all having to be paid to drive on) are all used for major roads connecting cities. Depending on where your teacher is from you may have their accent.
