Me melting aluminum at my shop. The device is a 1200 Watt CalRod heating element embedded in a Perlite / Furnace Cement (4:1 ratio) refractory. The crucible is a ceramic jar I found at home, it holds 700 mL. The temperature is somewhere around 900C (1650F) or higher... Spent less then $50 dollars to make it.

I've been researching diy foundries? for a couple of weeks, and yours is the first electric one I've seen (which is ironic since most real foundries these days are electric). Nice stuff. So much quieter than propane or charcoal (though some might argue that the roar is part of the fun). So your crucible is embedded in the refractory, and you tilt the whole thing to pour the aluminum? Are you still using this, or a variation on it, 4 years later?

I've never heard any American pronounce it 'al-you-min-ee-um' or spell it aluminium. Dictionary spells it 'aluminum'? & gives pronunciation as 'uh-loo-muh-num'. -Also, is it really a good idea to have a pot of molten aluminum right in front of stairs?

In case you hadn't? noticed - in the UK, the word 'Aluminum' is *not* pronounced differently, it's *spelled* differently! We add an additional 'i' making it 'Aluminium'. Look on the packet at the beginning of the film. They decided to do this so that it follows the element naming 'ium' convention - Barium, Rhodium, Titanium, Cadmium, Chromium etc. So if youwanted to be picky you could say the US spelling is 'non-standard'.

@GIEDOED, the app most likely requires root access, yes. If you want to look? into rooting, check out chainfire's one click root for sgs2 on xda forums. There are tons of benefits to having a rooted device, however it will void you warranty, and I'd understand you not wanting to root because of that, but I believe it's possible to completely reset your device using a USB jig.

Wrong. In the UK, it's Aluminium, but? in the US, it's Aluminum. Both are correct, neither is incorrect. US and UK are two different places, and though the language is English, American English is not the same as UK/British English, and many words have slight differences. But in the US, aluminum is correct. It isn't a mispronunciation or misspelling. It's annoying when people from different countries try to correct each other about stuff that isn't wrong in that country.

I do believe that in order for a process to qualify as "WELDING" one would be required to "MELT" "BOTH" metals in order to achieve "FUSION". Joining metals with a capillary action ("THIS VIDEO") where all metals do not reach their melting temperature is either BRAZING or? SOLDERING, depending on other factors.

@FOXnewsAlien Alu isn't? hard at all compared to steel. It's a bitch to grind only because it is soft and picks up on the bit. Try grinding it with a very coarse bit, using technical spirits or windscreen wiper fluid as "lube".. and if you're doing milling or have it in a lathe, get that cutting speed to at least twice that of steel. You'll do fine.
