After you have given them all you can, you find that you don't make enough to give them what you want to give them. Try it, try and do something nice only to receive reward there will be no feel good factor reward for you because there is no? deceiving god. You have to selflessly put the good of another person or animal before yourself and then you will be rewarded. Altruism exists and god gave it us. God gave us a brain reaction/feel good benefit factor every time we do something for someone else. So Altruism becomes its own? reward if we put others first before our own needs we will be rewarded with a nice feeling as a reward from god. We don't just do something nice to receive that feeling because its impossible you only receive the nice feeling if you go out of your way to genuinely put someone else first over yourself with no hidden agenda!!!

Whilst the majority of the room would have been focused on the fact that this man just proved the speakers? theory, the natural reaction would have been to think positively about the man and thus his status would have improved. Its not an immediate benefits but it doesn't have to be immediate to be a benefit. Thats exactly the point, like other scientists, i do not believe altruism actually exists. A lecturer of mine was talking about a seminar recently, where the speaker was talking about how altruism does not exist. Then all of a sudden an attendee stood up and said that it wasn't true and it did exist as he recently donated a lot of money to charity anonymously. The speaker? then responded by alerting him

Although i am not really familiar with the example, i am going on the information that you provided. Its still not altruism, as the deffininition of altruism is that you are helping a stranger in some way at cost to yourself and gain NO benefit, whether it is immediate or further down the line, and they ARE gaining a benefit! They aren't particularly good hunters, so food is shared amoungst the? group. They are giving food up when they feed on that day and on another day they are.....

Yes. If they want to use this strict determination of altruism in terms of altruism based on biological necessity meaning selfishness. Like you, I also prefer not to call it selfishness. The mother has an inbuilt need to protect her child, biological? altruism, some have more some have less of it, it has to do with the brain formation, but this need to protect the baby, called mother instinct, when it's huge, sees no boundaries between species. At least that's how I work.

One serious problem I have with this guy's claims is that it assumes free will, which has no scientific bases - the question of whether, or under what circumstances we exercise altruism might is most definitely a question of biology, psychology and physics. Currently the indication is that we are mainly deterministic with possibly some? probabilistic elements - which completely overrules overcoming the three named elements.

Depends from what perspective. It is entirely possible for the individual to act in a manner that is genuinely altruistic. Genes have no more motives than does a bottle of bleach: motives imply intent. What is called genetic selfishness is what helps the propagation of a given gene. I? guess what I'm saying is that human selfishness and genetic selfishness are not the same thing. What is selfish from a human standpoint could be altruistic from a genetic standpoint and vice-versa.

aha, 'duty alone'! indeed, you accomplish some daunting/altruistic task so that (a) you don't feel guilty for not having done it and (b) you feel satisfied for having completed it. the alternative would be, 'oh no, i should...' or 'man, i would feel so much better for him/her/it/me if ...'. the meaning of 'selfish' is quite deep and blurs many once-clear boundaries. and that? is exactly what Dawkins, Rand, Pinker and Harman here and many many others are talking about :)

Agreed. That's where I differ from Hayek. I think that markets are a human creation and therefore the rules of economics are not fixed. Smith's ":invisible hand" makes it appear as though supernatural forces are at work in the market, as if God himself is the inventor of capital. That raises capital to? the status of a religion. What she was concerned with was being FORCED to give up things for others and not having a choice (welfare state).
