This is very good as always. I have been known to shank short irons and I agree its because the head moves? forward. I think that the sensation of keeping head behind the ball leads to a fear of a high shot. Maybe Shawn could comment on that. I have shanked in the past because my hands are way forward and my head is wanting to move forward to make sure I stay over the ball in an attempt to keep it low and hit down on it. This wrong swing logic leads to shanks as Shawn shows.

@Shawn I love your videos. I've been trying to implement your techniques. I went to the range tonight and had mixed? results. I basically hit three different shots. Either it would be an excellent shot long down the middle, a pull hook, or a shank. I'm hoping next time I go to the range the drill in this video will fix it. Any other ideas why these might happen? Also, I've noticed on my downswing I get out over my toes at impact and follow-through. (even though I try not to) Ideas?

Wow! Keeping the head steady has been phenomenal for my game.? I've been attempting the feet together drill and the one leg drill and have been losing my balance because my head was following the club. Now that I keep my head steady, I feel rock steady and the club actually pops in front of and behind the ball every single time! It's amazing how the tiniest things can have such a huge impact on the golf swing.

shawn, the steady head part to this video is possibly the best advice ive seen... i've managed to play rounds in the high 70's, then the next week it'll be in the 90's due to swing tinkering. the last couple of rounds and at the range ive hit the ball with only one swing thought,? keeping my head behind the ball. amazing!! ive always known it, but never really paid much attention to it. its definately the key!!! thanks soo much!

Ya, exactly. Just wrap it around the shaft near the head and tie a knot. It makes it heavier and the towel catches wind resistance to make you use your? hips more along with strengthening your core muscles. Tie the towel do 25 swings with the towel on there and then take it off and swing and feel how much easier it is to swing...I hope you give it a try.

Shawn, Your videos are the greatest! I'm about a 7 handicap? with a horrible and recurring case of the shanks. It always seems to happen when I'm playing well. I believe its because I'm sliding the hips instead of turning and clearing. This video is really helpful in turns of emphasizing the turn. My only issue when thinking about not sliding the hips is a feeling of not getting my weight off the back foot. Any advice? Thanks again!

Shawn, I watched this video as I am having trouble figuring out how far away from the ball I need to be with my driver, i.e. the position of my hands. From what I can glean from this and your other video on the subject, it is to be determined by where you can swing and keep in balance. Is that? correct? Got your DVD about 4 months ago and have been a keen viewer of your video's for around a year since I started playing. I've been having problems with my? long irons (5,4 & hybrid) seem to be hitting the ground before the ball. Can't seem to cure the problem any ideas. S through to 6 Iron I'm getting very clean hits 80-90% of the time.

Hi...I rarely leave comments on videos but I just want to tell you that you are the best instructor that I've seen...The local pga pro's in my area don't seem to convey lessons in the manner you do...You've tremendously improved my golf game over the past 6 mos...I hit my first hole in 1 after just two years of playing golf and have a 12 handicap (putting could be better)...haha...I wish I could have got up with you when you were here in North? Shawn, The book is on order at our Charleston public library. Upon arrival,I'll be sure to let you know how things are going. Without it, I'm still having trouble breaking 80. Last two rounds were 85's. My three to seven iron shots are very inconsistent. Average eight greens in regulation per 18 holes. Chipping is great. Putting and driving are good. Lessons have helped a lot, (I shot in the 100's five years? ago when I took up the game.) Of course, I also find your videos invaluable. bill

Very good drill for both sides; hit some backhand shots with the lead arm, you will notice you need to be closer to the ball; then do shots with the trailing arm and you will need to back up away from? the ball; you will realize some very important things! BTW, after getting my left hand broken in the late 80's I was forced to practice my right forehand and left backhand for 4 weeks while the left hand was in a cast and won the very first event I entered when the cast came off

Spent a bit of time with Moe and enjoyed every lucky moment and had some very nice conversations with him; very very sound mechanics and BTW, he never gripped the club or swung the club as they describe in Natural golf; that was a hoax; the key is to make sure you are always in balance and you are never fighting the momentum of the swing; all my videos have this as a base in every shot I hit; I would recommend you get my dvd as it? is chock full of these topics; thanks for the question!

Hi Shawn. You should do a session on rules & etiquette...much needed. BUT...check out Rule 20-1....clearly states the marker must be "immediately behind " the ball. Now then ..when are you coming to Britain?..."Toss and fall" has cured 3 years of yipping chipping....and when I? get it right the long stuff is unbelievable....just need some confirmation about what is right. PLEASE HELP ME!!! i need help with my hip movement on my DOWNSWING!!!! my hips look like they are shooting TOO FAST and my upper body? falls behind and if you can say gets stuck.... i think my right heel raises up TOO FAST as a result...my divots point left(im a righty) and i always have to play a small fade as that has become my natural swing....HOW CAN I FIX THIS????? ...I think there is confusion in understanding what is meant by release... the default for golf newbies is to release to the ball... with experience one learns to release to the target... I think that releasing to the ball is the default for most golfers... even the pros make release to? the ball errors with disastrous results... Baliol

Thanks Shawn. I recall someone saying that Travino had to switch from being a hitter to a swinger? in order to compete on the Champions tour ( when he still played it). I had no idea how to do that until I found you, got your fabulous DVD series and subscribed to your YouTube. No one teaches how to swing a golf club with more clarity and simplicity. ok, so now i own the momentus weighted lob, 5 iron, driver. I went on to buy the 6.5, 9, and 11.5 strength training aids. I hope in time to be able to work? the weight up and get to the 11.5. Sorry it took so long to reply; just catching my breath after a very? busy season; have a look at my "Grass whip" and "Grass whip on course strategies" as well as the "Awareness to the low point in your swing"; I gather you have already seen my "Great Driver Tip" and my "Rip the driver" videos? Last thing is make sure your eyes are on the back of the ball or the tip of the tee and that you feel that you are always in position to catch the ball on the upswing; Get with my forum too!

shawn,i have been playing golf for about 7 years and play approx.4 to 5 days a week.for the last 8 months i have been skying my driver constantly,my handicap has suffered drasticly because of this,at first i thought i? was lunging at the ball and may very well may have been,although i am not lunging at the ball anymore i cant stop hitting down on the ball with the driver like i am hitting a short iron,i have been using a 3 wood on almost every tee ,HELP

Reviewed vids recently while practicing, I am frequently hitting push draws which end up right down the middle a new and aesthetically pleasing ball flight but......not all the time. The other ball flight is more of a straight shot that hooks moderately.....not what I want of course. Third is just straight. For the push draw my feel simulates the "hammering the nail into the board" feel. For the straight? shot....I'm keying on a sense of the catapult. Not sure what is causing hook??

I've been studying golf (too much!) for the past 10 years, and I always tried to find a way to feel the clubhead's weight, without much success. At 5:05, when you said then in the BS, the club must float, many lights when on ;) Being able to let the club float will allow me to use the compression move too!! Very important comment and misunderstanding about human anatomy; the turn table for the body is where the pelvis sits on top of the hips; please see a simple analogy in this video: "golf pro lesson garage door big power"; SHOULDERS DO NOT TURN!! Pelvis and rib cage turn as one massive unit on top of hips to get out of the way of? the arm-club unit; it is this way with ALL SPORTS because we are dealing with A HUMAN SKELETAL SYSTEM. "pulling on shoulder socket" --i found interesting. too often my students (usually in their 60's) expend so much effort to take a bigger shoulder turn because they want more distance. and too often they injur their shoulders/lower back. the spine can only sustain so much. i understand the horseshoe analogy, but i fear having any senior golfer swing a club or horseshoe like that. clubhead speed can be "safely" generated by staying centered, making the club light, and utilizing? the arms.

Great video, Shawn... I really liked the brain / gravity computer analogy. As a first year player I'm still honing my swing but already my wedge play is? dead on. It drives me nuts to hear instructors talk about 10-2, 9-3, 8-4 O'clock swings for distance control because it's so unnatural. I can't tell you how far my backswing is to hit the ball 35 yards but I intuitively know to swing it "just enough" and it goes where I want. (Someday I'll trust my full swing as much!)

Oh yeah you bet Shawn!!!!....I actually live in the channel islands (Jersey) moved over with RBC, we have golf all year round and the weather stays pretty cool during the whole winter (it is like golfing during fall in T.O.). Target focus should be number two in priorities after the Grip. My? target focus is atrocious at the best of times. I hit the ball plenty far (300+ avg driver, 6i is my 200yd club, PW 160) but am obsessed with creating some kind of 'ultimate swing' and am so focused on that I forget where I want the ball to go which is the most important thing! I'll keep watching this Mr Clement until it sinks in and hopefuly start kicking old man par's teeth in!

Well like in my dvd where I show the ball on a string, when you swing the arm club unit freely to a target, it forms a nice arc; we just need to position this arc properly with the ball with the posture and ball position and then simply be aware that there will be a strike on the way to the target; see "golf pro lesson stop topping and take better divots" part 1? and 2 as well as "golf pro lesson tilted twirl"; all the best! You simply need to replace the ball with something else; take a plastic disc the size of a penny like a plastic ball marker and skip through? that a few times on your way to the target; then put a ball on top of the disc or just imagine the disc is still there under the ball and keep skipping through the disc to the target; you will get a way better strike; see "golf pro lesson distance to ball part 2" just in case too: Shawn

Hi Shawn, whenever I am hitting short irons or wedges it feels like my chest is diving at? the ball and then coming back up and it is really hurting my consistency. The best drill to use is the "golf pro lesson perpetual motion drill" in combo with the eyes closed drill of the DVD; go through the awareness ladder from the feet to the? hips to the non crashing of the arms to the arm motion to the proper function of the grip to the skipping of the sole of the club across the ground in both directions...Fun stuff!

great insights into an important topic, shawn. i? find hitting balls with my eyes closed is a fun way to practice not fixating on hitting the ball. when i'm on the course i'll take my practice swings next to the ball with my eyes closed which allows me to FEEL where my body wants to "throw" the clubhead; then just take one step to the ball and swing where my body tells me it wants to swing w/out even thinking about the target, per se. if i take my set-up correctly, direction takes care of itself.

Hi Shawn, I've been watching your videos these past few weeks and you've emphasised greatly on instinctive golf. I used to have a problem? with my weight shift but after watching your videos, I just decided to lift my right foot earlier so that I instinctively shift my weight to my left side or else my right toe would be crush or I'd fall down etc.. You will feel the texture of the sand through the feet and if you keep? the focus on using momentum to move the sand forward using the sole of the club, you will feel exactly how much momentum you will need to use! Just try it with sand only and then when you put the ball there, DO NOT LET YOUR FOCUS GO TO THE BALL!! It is just a grain of sand amongst the rest of them and continue to use the same focus as when you were simply skipping sand onto the green w/momentum

Super lesson! I tried this at the range today and it truly worked. Best thing about it was I wasn't focused on getting the ball onto the green from the bunker but imagining how much momentum it would take to get the divot of sand out. Shawn, thanks for the video. I have tried your thought of imagining the momentum required to toss the sand to the hole. I have since had 3 sand shots in 2 games. 2 shots bounced in the hole for birdies (no lie).? One went by the hole and stopped within "gimmie" range. I did open a 60 degree wedge with a cut swing. I surprised myself as I don't usually get my sand shots close to the hole. I hope I see more of it. Thanks again!

I would be very interested in seeing how to handle hard sand - like after? it had rained (the ball is sitting on concrete almost you know?). The bounce of the club basically skips on the hard surface and directly hitting the ball, causing all sorts of mis-shots... HELP!

Hi Shawn, I found your videos and went through most and found something to work on. It was getting the? back leg braced in a good position for that push forward feel. First I tried getting that back turned toward the target on a plane to the back foot. What made my session much better was getting the arms to momentum along with that move to what I would say a comfy back leg feel. Pretty soon it was arm cadence and my end of bucket going MUCH more solid and straight. Keep er up!! CJ

When doing a shorter swing; do not restrict the hip turn! When a baseball pitcher tosses a ball to first base he uses a full body motion; it is just not a full range of his full body motion! It was unconscious and tells me to be aware of my alignment a tad more...I hit the shot 4 feet so it was not that bad and it could have been outside factors such as the slope of the fairway and the contour of the green and the way it fit my eye so I would say that it was subconcious... Hey Shawn, I noticed you have some really great lag on the down swing and your right elbow? is nice and close to your body. Are you conscious of the amount of lag you're creating on the down swing...or is the lag and elbow close to the body automatically created without thinking of it? You are basically hitting a slice from an inside to out path right? Your path is pretty good I assume but your? clubface is open at impact which enables the ball to start to the right I think you spin out your hips you hips are very active in the downswing and because of that your arms can't collaborate with your hips and your arms are come waybehind you. Try to feel in your swing that you are just swinging with your arms ofcorse this does not happen feel ai'nt real. Hope it helps.

antonio, at the end of the ball's flight, the velocity and the backspin rpm (the flight dynamics? that propel the ball outward and upward) diminish. at that point, the side spin tends to exert more influence from an aerodynamic standpoint. so, the ball falls down in the direction of the side spin (draw or fade). I say hit as straight a ball as possible to maximize your carry distances. go w/ your tendency to fade or draw, but let it be subtle, just at the end of its flight.

Yea, pull out the Force! Use a very overstable? disc when throwing into headwinds, or even crosswinds. Headwinds push your disc up then down often. Throw the disc low. You can put anhyzer on it but be sure it will come back!! If the wind is at your back, wind can push the disc it up, and you can achieve more glide, it might not flex out untill it's to late too. It's best to use the driver your the most comfortable with, and put extra hyzer on it, maybe more height if your in a field.

I agree the part about keeping the fingers right alongside the rim is somewhat bs it might create some drag but probably not that much. The part that is real bs is the fact that? Matt states his avg drive is 350 and when he does a couple drives then the instructor goes "that's 75ft you gained buddy you gained", even though he drove like 310, and maybe a 330 after that. That's a loss of several ft, not a gain.

The best option will vary with the circumstances. In most cases the best option in taking relief from a lateral water hazard may be to drop a ball? within two clublengths of the point where the ball last crossed the margin of the hazard, not nearer the hole. Otherwise, the player will be playing over the hazard. However, if you have just thinned a shot from a green side bunker into a hazard the best option could be to play from the bunker again. Barry

Great information, but having watched both your lateral and water hazard rules is there any priority that the selection of shot that should be played,for instance if in a dry lateral hazard or the margin of a water hazard and you can't play the ball out due to a bad lie and decide to take? a penalty drop, what should be the next option to be considered ,and if that is not suitable which one next and so on, basically is there any strict order that should be adhered too. Answering the previous query from sportbob, if one of the options is not available to the player is not playable then obviously the player has to choose another option, one of which is to go back to where the previous stroke was played from under penalty of stroke and distance. It's too bad you use the phrase "through the green" when you meant "over the green" since "through the green" has a defined meaning within the Rules of Golf which is different than how you used it. The choice of words is really important in? the Rules!! :)
