I don't believe that I'm projecting. I used body release because I didn't want to say CP release, push release or any of the terms that people use for? that style of motion. Nelson, Snead, and Hogan all had swings that used a delivery path that went inside and exited to the left --- Opposed to a Phil Mickelson swing that has an out to the right delivery path. You can snap your hands in any release style.

I never thought I'd see anybody who could give Jack a run for his ability not to three-putt and? to make just about every four- and five-footer for an entire tournament, but Woods did. And Snead swore Hogan was a _great_ putter in his prime, unlike the image most people had of him toward the end of his great career.

To be fair, Nelson's stunning career was a short one. The truth is, almost every great player who lasted over decades went through at least some degree of change in his swing? (Snead is a notable example to the contrary). But for the most part, the very best didn't completely change their entire concept of the swing. Nicklaus, for example, made some adjustments in 1980 while still holding to his original fundamentals, and then readjusted a few years later (before the '86 Masters).

You're projecting your own idea of body release onto players who talked regularly about swinging? their arms and snapping their hands with a definite release. It's important not to overread the movement of "the body" (the torso, mainly) as driving rather than supporting the action (often misstated as "following" the action). I think guys like Grout and Nicklaus had this about right: It's really a matter of all parts working in a coordinated manner.

I agree that Nelson's swing is more natural to perform. Amazingly so, Nelson, Hogan, and Snead all used the same kind of body release through the? swing. I'm more of a Jack style golfer, but I deeply admire the body release of those players.

In most cases the arms should not lift from the shoulder joints immediately in the takeaway, although an immediate lift is usually much better than a sideways? drag to the inside (take a look at Lee Trevino). If you look closely at Steve Bann's student with the best swing, Stuart Appleby, you'll notice that he doesn't lift immediately, but the illusion is there, because his right arm is early "folding" straight up, which forces the club further out and up in front of his chest as he's turning.

Ok so heres my thought, 1) practice your pivot daily with your arms folded on your chest so your just focusing on developing your shoulder turn(get your pivot? down!) 2) Grab a club say a 7 iron and practice the arms up lifting move demonstrated on this video until you have ingrained the feeling(do it a thousand times). Then when your out their on the course/range just think (TURN/LIFT) simultaneously, feedback please :)

Great lesson but the missing link seems to be "how to get the proper blending of the shoulders turning and arms lifting"? he even said that himself in the video if you listen carefully! My guess is that everything turns away from the ball "together" ie one piece takeaway and then at waste high the arms begin to lift and the shoulders complete their turn to 90degrees, Or do the arms lift off the chest at the same precise time that the shoulders begin to turn(thus blending the 2) any thoughts??

So essentially my waggle is in front of me(just as Steve does it in this clip), then once your set behind the ball, focus on making a nice easy soft turn and your arms just know where to go, dont? even think about positions etc, just let your arms move as you did in the waggle(the muscle memory will be there/fresh), and enjoy the result...try it :) my friends said the waggle in front looked a little odd but were amazed at the results. Ok i tried this again today and crunched my opening drive around 290-300 dead straight!!!(not kidding) best part it felt effortless! I actually lifted the club up in? front of myself(as he does in the clip but i made it part of my preshot waggle if you like, (2 lifts in front to train the arm action, then set up to swing and just focused on making a good turn knowing that my arm action would be just as i had rehearsed in my preshot waggle, it was AMAZING!!!! 2 lifts in front, set, turn, bam..

I think this is great advice! if i could just add one thought that may help, try to focus on your thumbs pointing upwards as you make your turn, this will give you the same arm action Steve is explaining here but will assist in helping you feel what your doing, so try to? blend the shoulder turn and thumbs up simultaneously, should get you on the perfect plane, works for me anyway :) goodluck....

This is a fantastic tip for people who take the club back too inside and too flat. This was my biggest issue years ago. I began rehearsing a practice swing move where I kept my left arm straight, and simply folded my right arm to 90 degrees, just as Steven explained. (The difference being that my left arm would move a bit more across my body than you see here.) in time, my arm bend and body turn blended together.? Interestingly, this also cured my other issue, crossing over at the top.

There is side motion!!! Look at any pga golfer, or any good golfer, at the very top of their backswing and you will see their left arm laid flat across their chest and their right arm, with its 90 degree angle, back behind them, ok. If they turned their torso back to the forward position, it would not mirror what Mr. Bann demonstrates here. With? that said, it is a wonderful demonstration of the backswing. This is closer to what happens with short irons, and not the fuller swing of longer clubs.

This is the best lesson? ever!!!! I have always watched golf on the TV and have always thought that it was the arms swinging around the body, however this video has shown a different aspect. Therefore, when swinging my club as you can see in my swing I basically swing around my body instead of them both working as one. I just swung a club in the mirror and it is in a great position at the top and the backswing feels so easy! Thanks dude!

Cmartin....thanks for the vid. I appreciate and watch all of your stuff. I have a chronic, CHRONIC, problem of coming in too steep right from the top. In my transition, my hands go out, and the shaft gets steep. Even when I feel like my hands are? going down and the shaft is flat, they're really going out and the shaft is steep. I've spend hundreds on lessons and swing aids, and I can't stop it. If I REALLY try to get flat, then the club gets stuck, and I have NO power. Can you help???

Rob, words of wisdom... get your hands on the club properly. Please don't take this lightly. A sound grip helps so much. The second thing would be to keep you backswing on the shorter side. Do I think there is a speed difference? Yes. I think you can load the shaft better by staring with "address" hands as opposed to "impact" hands. I'll have to do some testing and let you know. A definite benefit from "address" hands is that it? reduces folks from whipping the clubhead inside and provides a better chance of a simple on-plane backswing.

Great question: why not set up at impact and return there? You can, I've seen some effective players do that and to agree with your point, Nicklaus, maybe the best ever, did a version of that setup. In most cases, starting at "address" and returning to "impact" provides much more energy and? dynamics to the strike. I can't think of a current Tour player who sets up in an "impact" hand location? They drive through impact with a club ripping to align with the lead arm.

I'm a self taught golfer who had a couple lessons when I was 17. Played for about 1 year very rarely, perhaps once a month. Didn't play for 5 years and have only in the past 3 months started again. Shawn, you mentioned having the clubface looking like it is shut before the elbow hinge, but it is actually still facing the direction of the swing plane. When the right arm actually folds, I've seen most players have the face perpendicular to the plane, and others- more like? It's a great drill, Shawn. The only incoherent thing is that in a golf grip both inside parts of hands are not parallel? (as when you hold the ball) - and it affects how elbow joints are working in the motion.

It could be; it could also be that your focus is too much on the ball and? not on the momentum to the target; it could be that your head is moving forward and not staying tilted behind the ball and finally, it could be that you are sliding in the backswing instead of turning. sorry this isnt the best place to post it. but i noticed how when you picked up the club the ball was further foward in your stance than where i put it, and somehow the sound of your club skipping doesnt? occur until after you made contact with the ball.i find that if i put the ball just foward of the centre of my stance im making contact with the turf kind of as i hit the ball(or on a good day just after the ball)is this caused by incorrect weight transfer onto my left foot coming into contact??

Wow, that's amazing; the fact that she's naturally right handed! I just can't imagine being able to swing from the left side like Phil, Savanah, and you. Are you right handed Shawn? My son-in-law swings equally well from both sides. He started playing from the left when he was playing baseball in high school because he thought a right handed golf swing would mess up his baseball swing. I know you've said? that you just "go deeper into the rabbit hole" to accomplish this, but it's still amazing.

Thank you very much! She is right handed and plays golf to her backhand, like Phil, Sergio, and many on the tour. She is a? soccer player though first but she could easily fall back on golf...:) She now has a skill for life in golf though!

Hey Shawn, great to see another left hander getting on well with your teachings. I have learnt more about the game of golf from your videos and comments than any pro so thanks!! The young lady has lots of extension and great rhythm. This? is incredible. This will sort my chipping issues im sure. I dont have this problem in the full swing but with chipping i can see how i have been restricting my arms with ribs due to lack of body rotation. I honestly thought it was a mental issue 'choking' on short game but i can agree its restricting arms on backswing and downswing. Another great lesson from Shawn. HELP!!!, I? understand your gravity swing, Pennies dropped, although my big question is at impact. Are my shoulders sqaure at impact with hip approx 30-40 degres open? Just watched this and the "don't crash video" - so simple, so effective. Just played 18 holes in the windiest UK weather and made one bad swing all? round (when I was forcing it into the teeth of a gale). Thanks again Shawn. I just discovered this tilt on my own, and sure enough, you made a video about it! I actually remembered about how you? always set your head before you swing, and then it clicked. You're setting your tilt! The club can start back on the correct inside track, the brace feeling gets the divot farther forward, all kinds of goodies.

Hi. He has some videos on this topic. The up-down head motion, or the squat, is a great way to create a lot of effortless whip. If you try the leg together drill and let the arms hang freely, you can quickly get a sense of how easy it? is to use a squat motion to generate power, and you can pretty quickly get the hang of topping the ball, or nipping the grass, or nipping the dirt etc. It doesn't require supernatural coordination.

I get the basic principal I think but your head moves up and down during the swing. I've always been taught to "keep the spine angle" and to avoid an up and down motion with the head. If you look at (say) a video of Bobby Jones' swing, his head is amazingly stable. You obviously have superior coordination. I wonder if that is why the up-down head can work for you. Great videos. When you do the tilted spiral and place the weight on the left side does your left hip/left side "fly open" and if so is that okay or does it? make it more difficult to get the hips turning properly?
