Is he quoting what? the two players said word for word? Highly unlikely. However I believe it really did happen. People did, and really still do, RP in UO. Hell, all MMO's. Not uncommon to see people talk like that. I do agree with the shard thing though. UO calls them shards. Every other game calls them servers. UO did not invent the idea. Having a shard/server only makes sense when dealing with an MMO.

Some of the stuff Richard Garriott says kinda makes him sound a wee bit out of touch with the genre. Shard is definitely not a common term for referring to servers among non-UO players. And the story about? the dude in the platemail and the fisherman. Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeah, I doubt it. Sounds like he's just endlessly bumping his own game.

People are missing the point with his discussion about the casual game stuff in his next MMO. He's saying that a person who likes the casual Facebook style game could drop into the new "Ultima" and do the social gaming thing *within* that game, as they already kind of were in Ultima Online, only those separate jobs? would be better supported and 'casual' games within their own right. The full on story RPG will be there. Being browser based also doesn't mean cheap and crap any more.

It's funny how Ultima 8 is regarded as the weakest and buggiest game of the franchise (all true) and yet it was the game that introduced me to the Ultima franchise and compelled me to explore the other titles. So I was delighted to hear that Garriott has never? shelved the game in his mind and, if given the opportunity, would return to Pagan in order to make the experience he wanted to share with Ultima fans from the beginning. I hope EA gives him that chance.

I really like the idea of this game he wants to make. I used to play UO back when it was the most popular MMO, but I was only about 7 years old at the time? so I don't remember it tremendously well. I do remember though that I got into blacksmithing, and being quite proud of being able to make some armors and etc. The pets and roles I think are just as important, perhaps more so, than the combat that has become so dominant in modern MMOs... if he can manage both in a modern game it will be great

Having said that, Germany (under Kaiser Wilhelm II) desired an empire and was building a Navy to match Great Britains Royal Navy to do just that. I think you should have made a greater distinction between American and Canadian English, because some of the terms you used were not correct for regions of the US. i.e. we say blinker, bumper, semi-truck (or 18 wheeler), and although we don't really use crossroads,? we will say, cross street.
