Very similar to Graham McDowell, shoulder turn is done half way back, then use arms to complete the swing thats why he gets laid off. He gets threw the ball so pure it doesn't matter about? the position at the top. Has one of the best down swings in the game!

I don't? see a lot of compensation in this swing, it's very simple and solid fundamentally. He doesn't cup his wrist like hogan, but does drop the club nicely into plane on the way down. Very manageable lag too! This guy ain't goin nowhere, he'll be around for a while.

obviously ball striking is important, but you dont become a great ball striker through perfect mechanics. You do it by having confidence? in your motion, whether it be lucas glover's handsy swing or stewart cinks really steep downswing/ comeacross. You just have to have confidence in your swing, you dont have to have the perfect swing.

Also, on equipment...here's one competition you're guaranteed never to see, because the PGA Tour would never allow it: Have the guys go back to persimmon, blades, and balata, and see what they shoot. Just for one weekend. It'd get all over their "these guys are good" campaign. I already know what the result was when? MacGregor brought out some persimmon woods in their van a few years ago to a tour event. In other words, you are soooo right on that point.

Then again, we talk about Snead as a great ballstriker, and Ernie's more or? less a Snead type--sweet-spots it a lot, but sometimes can hit loose shots that hurt him. I guess the distinction I'd make between him and Snead is that Snead, I think, didn't go through longer stretches of iffy ballstriking like Ernie has, although that may have a lot to do with the knee injury (he hasn't been the same since). Totally agreed on him being a great human, BTW.

Not a bad point. I agree that modern equipment has made it possible for a _lot_ of players to look better than they actually are (but I don't think Els is in that group). I agree that he might not be in the top all-time group of strikers simply because he's not at the level of consistent control of a Hogan, Nelson, et al. (I'd put guys like Faldo? and Price in too, and even Nicklaus, who I think was underappreciated as a striker), but not because he doesn't hit it solid a lot, because he does.

with today's equipment, many "suck" compared to when you had to hit the center of the clubface. While suck is a bit harsh, I would not put? Ernie in any group of great ball strikers. Would nominate him for being a great human though.

My dad always tried to get me to model my swing? of off Els' and there's no better swing out there to emulate. Even if you make a mistake, you have such a better chance of correcting by swinging nice and easy and focusing on the mechanics. I love his swing

Last time I checked, he was? gaming royal precision 8.0's in his irons. To produce that much flex in those shafts is insanity. Can't remember the driver shaft but it's a callaway head so he's certainly losing yardage with that one.

There is no tee, but it is? just a practice drill, probably to make sure he doesnt make too much lateral movement off the ball. look at the ball a foot in front of the one he hit, that is on a tee. Alvaro booms it high, low whatever he likes, but when you hit the ball as far as he does, hitting it high is no big problem, gets it stopping quicker on the lightning quick greens they play on. Well sir you need to look up your definition of consistency. He hasn't posted? a top 25 in the past 2 months. Now I'm not saying he needs to be first page of the leaderboard every week, but missing the cut 3 out of 5 times doesn't really scream consistency to me.
