If this is the European-built All-track, it will be > $40k (like the older Passat GLX 4-motion wagons) ... but still a lot of car for that price (more car than an A4 Quattro Avant. However, it won't steal many sales from the Outback. More likely to steal from Volvo and Benz wagons. HOWEVER, if they built this in Tennessee from the American Passat and got the base price below $35k then it has a market. Priced below $30k you'd start eating? Subaru's lunch, but I can't imagine it that low.

I agree that Subaru will definitely give it some staunch competition, but I think that there's something to be said for the fact that it's a diesel, not to mention its german roots. With good enough advertising for publicity, plus the younger guys who had Jetta tdis from the mid 2000s and are just starting families, this may be the perfect new family car for them. So long as VW can keep the starting price reasonable (28-29k?), this could give Subaru a? run for its money. It looks better, too.

This is exactly what my family and i were looking for in a car! Four-wheel drive, plenty of luggage room, great mileage in the diesel, and all of it on a Passat. We just got a normal Passat? tdi, and we love it, but it's just so disappointing that this car isn't currently available. If you were to have a car like this in America, I think that you would be pleasantly surprised by consumer feedback and willingness to buy the product. SUV capabilities + fuel efficiency = the perfect all around car.

Americans won't pick this over cute-utes like the cr-v/tiguan, so don't bother bringing this here. It will cannibalize Allroad sales, and its sole direct competitors Subaru outback/forester will be priced much lower. Bring the Up!, Scirocco,? and next generation of Direct Injection tech(sans carbon buildup) to petrol engines(from ur LMP1) which will dominate the competition in power and efficiency. A lightweight, rwd, manual 6 speed roadster/coupe to appease your tired yet loyal enthusiasts.

I like this, but really hope its longer than the Jetta Sportswagen (which I currently own). If this was a similar length as? a Passat or Touareg (i.e. adult legroom in back seat) this could be great. Trouble with Jetta is that when adults on the front seat are over 6' tall, there is not enough clearance for adults OR child seats in the back seat. This is the #1 reason why we may not keep our Jetta Sportwagen.

When we were looking for a handicap modified minivan for my? wife, we saw the VW Routan and Chrysler Town & Country side by side. Essentially the same vans, built in the same North American factory. She opted for the VW badged vehicle because of the VW Bugs she had in college and the new Scirroco she bought for her first job. Yeah, we know it's a Chrysler underneath, but the VW badges make us feel like we can run again. It's important.

Um, I'm starting to think that our culture is actually moving away? from speed, and into reliable myself. It's either got more horse power for more work (trucks) or has better fuel efficiency for the same usage. I may not follow the herd like a car fanatic might do, but all the commercials and advertisements, as well as overheard conversations tend to point me towards that line of thinking. In fact, i'm seeing more cars that fit the moment's need in movies than the fast or nothing ideal.

I beg to differ. American car culture is very specific. It's all about power and speed. Americans desire these about all else. They do need fast cars because they think they do. It's only that this commercial? was not aimed at the typical consumer who desires these things. It was aimed at a different market: parents. This commercial is specifically aimed at parents who are buying a new car or who want to get their 16 year old a safe car. That's all.

The major issue is that you have this great divide between the culture of the company (German efficiency, engineering, quality) / and the passing on of the machine? to these independent, often family owed dealerships. It's unfortunate as more often than not something is lost in translation, whether knowledge, competence or otherwise. You'd think the manufacture would sell directly to the customer to ensure a complete experience. Granted, this is also a regional? thing.

Stop dicking around, either make a COOL car that actually looks like? the real bug, or don't call it "Bug-this" or "But-that". This is far worse in some respects, than the "new beetle". They could learn a thing or two about how to build a car from their fore-bears. Put the chrome trim back on, but the rounded non-integrated styling back in, etc. Not as horrible as the "new Mini" which is just ridiculous and waay bigger than modern compacts anyway, but this is still a suck-ass BUG impersonation.

He copied a lot of the design from Tatra, the chech company which fell into german hands in 1939. And Hitler was involved with the designing of the bug. They are the ones running the place. They are the ones working 80-90 hours a week and not getting paid. They have to fix all the problems that everyone else? makes. What does any of the things you listed have to do with them getting screwed over? Its not their fault. Its the ones who are actually being lazy, and don't know what they're doing. Typical Americans? No offense but this place is awful! My husband works there and its ridiculous. They treat their workers like crap. They do nothing but screw them over left and right. I live in a house that has 4 people working there and they are all miserable. They all hate it. Not to mention what it does to your social life. It takes it away completely. VW is a good car company and all, but they really need to work on how they? treat their employees.

Ive been to this plant!!! I couldn't go past the gates though. Was with my dad working and he had to check on some portable generators. Super secretive VW? is. Cool though. I am glad they supply so many of our Americans with jobs, when our own American companies don't. And as you see.... there are a LOT of jobs there.

Well, I feel kinda bad for these folks working in this factory. They will be assembling a poorly designed, over-priced piece of crap! I have a 2004 New Beetle convertible that has only? 70,000 miles and just spent $4818.56 to get the transmission repaired. That's on top of a new water pump, alternator and three (3) out of the windows have collapsed into the doors and body, which cost a fortune to repair. There are other items such as switches and indicators that malfunction. Last VW for me.

I come from a country with a very good - excellent does not exist - public transport. Trains, busses, trams (we can even buy or tickets via a mobile phone), car? and cycling hiring shemes, cycling paths etc. and people still use their car. Probably less than in certain countries but the car or bike is the only vehicle that can bring you everywhere. As soon as you are with more than one the car is getting more interesting.

I'd like to have a 2012 Passat or Beetle TDI. 40 to 50 mpg is nothing to sneeze at, and the "clean diesel" engines are great. They're the most reliable VW products. Quiet, powerful,clean, and very economical. Apparently not enough for amirfecher, though. He'd have us all packed in cans like sardines. No thanks. The tree-huggers can have my car when it's? pried from my cold, dead hands...

Nice factory. Too bad the workforce starts out making about $14.00 an hour. The people building the new Passat can barely afford to buy the least expensive model they make. Still, I hope they build them better than my Puebla, Mexico-built 2006 Jetta GLI that didn't go 3 months without ending up in the shop for something major. Traded it after 2&1/2yrs & 44K miles and haven't looked back. The only VW? models I would consider are the TDI diesels. Once bitten, twice shy..Shame, too.

How about the axle shafts? Triple square sockets are only used by VW. They are over $60 to get just one socket. And most all vehicles (American anyway) have Standard NUTS not bolts. Every VW owner I ask says the same thing I do. Lug bolts make wheel removal harder. Now I never said that VW? was a bad car. I just said that they are hard to work on and do not need to be as complicated as they are.

Don't know what you mean by that. The Mk4 Jetta has metric bolts to remove rotors calipers. No special tools needed. Oh and by the way, I'm glad Volkswagens are harder to work on, because that set us apart. Most anyone can work on a Japanese or American cars. German? cars take unique skill.

I'm a retired auto mechanic. Last 20 years I worked at a VW dealership. VW's, as with all german cars have 2 faults: seals and electrical. Why do you think the Japanese, and now Korean cars are out selling the Germans? Frequency of repair! Look at any long term owners? survey and you'll see how bad they get after about 60k miles. I had numerous VW owners who finally got smart and traded their VW in for a Toyota, Nissan, etc. VW's perform well WHEN THEY ARE RUNNING. They just simply don't hold up!

I have always found the VW Technicians to be conscientious. It is not their fault the New Beetle is a P.O.S. ! I have had five (5) New Beetles since 1999, two for me and three for my wife, and the last one is a convertible that was defective one month off the lot and they had to give us a new one. Now at 70,000 miles the transmission? is being replaced. The windows fall down, three of them so far, and the water pump is made of plastic and has gone to pieces. Electrically, terrible.

My first VW, a MK2 GTI ('84?), had to be scrapped at only 42K miles. A loose planetary gear inside the tranny came loose and actually wore a hole through the tranny? case! On the other side of the coin, my current MK4 ('03) 24V VR6 GTI has given me NO problems whatsoever in the almost 10 years i've owned the car! It has been more reliable than even the best Japanese cars i've owned!
