I think that's the point. She's presumably been told? to just sit in front of the camera and be herself, but she has nobody to talk to and nothing to interact with. Anybody would react this way. It's such a simple video to film, but I don't think I've ever seen anything like it before - this lengthy a gaze is frightening for both her and us.

Really brings back memories! This old frog was still able to hop around when this song came out, and images of back then? pop in my head! I'm normally not too big on live cuts-they almost never sound like the record! But this is great, considering that! The 1st time I heard it, I was surprised R.E.M. could write such song. The line 'a simple prop to occupy my time' was really offensive, conflicting to the 1st line that makes a listener to be ready to hear a sweet song. I was like: how can someone you love be a simple prop? Kind of love song, kind of not. When R.E.M. play it live, it seems kind of appropriate song: it's sung to this audience, then to other and so on. It's very impressive hearing the whole audience sing it? along with the band.

For me this song is like about one looking for love. Possibly having too? much of love, but not completely sharing it, maybe for a fear. Sadly, not appreciating love given by others, and all anguished, regreting for such behaviour, yet running in this circle. This song became hit not without the reason. Not all songs have to be sweet melodies. Love R.E.M. for the diversity of themes of their songs and how the whole song or a line of it can have a big and often different meaning for many people.

Mike was asked? if there were any songs not on the compilation that he wishes had been. He said he wanted "Find The River" to be included, but it was not included because there were already four songs from Automatic and because they did not want to leave off any of the three new songs. Um, seriously? Plenty of R.E.M. songs are impressionistic, but this isn't one of them. Just look at the lyrics of the chorus -- saying "You cling to this, and claim the best - if this is what you're offering, I'll take the rain", is basically saying, in the context of verses about a relationship that never grew beyond a summer love, "You aren't? giving me a good reason to stay in this -- I'll take my chances, I'll brave uncertainty to find something better."

The whole point of the skateboard and dog are to be symbols of something besides the obvious. The skateboard so loves the dog that he allows her to? step on him even when they are in the best of circumstances. I'm sure you can give me some explanation as to what you consider the song title means but the fact is it has no meaning. Sometimes things can not have any meaning, but can still be good art. Song makes me realize how many of us may think of ourselves as lepers--only damaged on the inside-- even though on the outside we appear perfectly normal. I've often thought, why hasn't anyone used this phrase before in a song, it's almost archetypal? A lot of Stipe lyrics? are like that. Nope...not even close. Kurt was dead long before this video was made. The Monster album was released in September 1994 and Whats the Frequency Kenneth was the first single which was also released in September. Kurt died in April.?

No, I totally get that, man. Lots of their other songs too (End of the World, Finest Worksong, The One I Love, etc). Some artists can do these guitar raveups and the sum is much more than the sum of the parts. Tom Petty used to do it, kinda, and long ago Niel Young w/ Crazy Horse, but REM was? needed when they came along.
