This really is a remarkable chemical experiment. Copper can form many coordination complexes in its second oxidation state. At least two of them are green. But a combination of them is not green at all: it's blue.

It's an inorganic compound, bla287. It does fume a little when acidified, but it's not nearly as nasty as HCN. I don't know anything about a possible change in coordination? number. It's virtually impossible to find specific information of this kind on the internet. Peter

Thx, but I'm really running out of further ideas right now :) So my last guess now would be an organic complexing agent, and there are soooo many of them! So maybe EDTA ,(en) or acetylacetone? SCN- would be a nice guess, but you already said "no". Maybe OCN-? (I guess you didn't use CN- and then made it acidic...? the fumes are, besides the smell, "not nice" as you know :D) One last question: does the Cu change it's coordination number? Like from 4 to 6?

Other possibility would be somehow analoguous to chromium(III) chloride, which changes it's color, depending on if you have [Cr(H2O)4Cl2]Cl * 2 H2O (dark green), [Cr(H2O)5Cl]Cl2 *? H2O (light green) or [Cr(H2O)6]Cl3 (violet). I don't know if Cu does sth. similar, though.

Hmm, if I look closer at the color of the blue solution, I'd guess now that it's neither an ammonia nor a water complex. But if you say "several constitutions", I'd guess the second green and the blue one have the same complexing agent, right? Maybe once in "cis" and once in "trans" conformation? Or maybe once connected with the one end, then with? the other end (like in cyanide complexes, which can connect to metal either with "N" or with "C")?

Is het thiocyanatokoper(II)-complex groen? Dat weet ik niet uit mijn hoofd. Mooie theorie, maar het verdunnenvan zo'n koperchloride-oplossing heeft? niet zo'n drastische kleurverandering tot gevolg. Er is echter nog een complex bij betrokken, dat nog niet genoemd is, en in meerdere toestanden voor kan komen.

Yeah, I just did it today and it really works! That's how I did it: Just add some CuCl2 (or other copper salt) to an ammonia solution, then add so long HCl until the colour changes from dark blue to light green. In a? second glass, prepare some NaOH solution. If you add your green solution to the NaOH now, you'll have a blue solution again. Didn't know until now that there is also another way (like you've shown in your video) to do this.

Hmm, I think the one which contains HCl also has some NH4Cl in it while the second one is alkaline. So if? they are combined, NH4+ is deprotonated to NH3 and can form the blue [CuNH4]2+ complex (The NH3 can only work in deprot. form, not as NH4+). But honestly, I don't know of any alkaline green Cu(II) complex ([Cu(OH4)]2- is blue), maybe some chelate ligand?

Hi, derkozten, You're right about the first one, but there's definitely no precipitate involved. Maybe it's because of the light that the second solution looks turbid, but it's entirely clear. Once you know the second one, you should get? an idea of the first one's counterion. Peter Jacobse

I think the "first green" is a chloride compound (HCl or NaCl, maybe?), but I have no idea about the "second green". It looks like a precipitate, but I'll have to do some research to know what compound is about.?

I'm going to paint with iron(III), using ammonium thiocyanate, sodium chloride and potassium ferrocyanide. Colored complexes will be formed when the dry chemicals meet ferric sulfate. In this way, Peter creates a piece of art. But disposal of the chemicals is fun to watch, too.

The ammonium compound is ammonium thiocyanate (NH4SCN). The thiocyanate ion will form a complex with the ferric ion by formation? of a bond between iron and nitrogen, so yes, you can regard this as a isothiocyanate complex.

When a pickle is subjected to 230 volts of electricity, it will begin to glow. Sodium ions inside the pickle are excited and produce a yellow-orange glow with a wavelength of 589 nm. Besides that, the acidic solution inside the pickle starts to cook and the pickle is burned, which can be smelled distinctively.

OK, here some wild guesses from me, too: 2: NaOH? (reacts to blue Cu(OH)2 and later to black CuO) 3: ethylen diammine?? 4: EDTA?? 5: sulfide (eg. H2S, Na2S...) (-> black CuS) 7: Na2CO3 (voluminous percipitate) 8: maybe a reducing agent such as sulfite (->Cu)??

A guess, after all! Thanks, indigofuzzy! 9 is hydrochloric acid, containing? Cl-. Good work. 10: copper(II) isn't acidous enough to release CO2 from carbonate salts, it will just precipitate. Another tube is filled with aqueous sodium carbonate. This tube has got an acid version of sodium carbonate. 11 is indeed aqueous ammonia. 5 does not contain hydrogen peroxide. I lost my notes, so I can't figure out what it is any more (I think it may be yellow prussiate). Sorry for that.

A few hints: After a while, a? WHITE precipitate is formed in tube 1. The precipitate, formed in tube 5 is black. The precipitate in tube 6 are brown/green "grains of rice" The precipitate in tube 8 is brown with a reddish hue. Tube 11 contains a purplish/blue solution; the purple color can't be seen very well on film.

Manganese dioxide is used tot katalyse the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide. Soap is added to produce foam, which is funneled through a narrow tube. The camerawork isn't great, but I hope you'll enjoy the show anyway.

Hello dimitri81523, Yes I have used potassium permanganate in stead of manganese dioxide. The former gives a much stronger reaction. I have compared the reaction in absence of soap: MnO2 causes vigorous bubbling, but? KMnO4 immediately turns H2O2 into steam, which is not very odd, because KMnO4 dissolves and catalyses heterolytically.

How do I? do that? It's the chemicals that are reacting; the only thing I've done is mixing them. If you mix about 10% H2O2 with MnO2-powder, you can make this reaction happen yourself. This reaction is not about speed. If you want to create a fountain of foam, you should take 30% H2O2 and add some saturated KI-solution. If you want to start with home-chemistry, which can and should be a rewarding and relatively safe hobby, you may consider buying a chemistry kit. Regards, Peter J.
